Son of Saul nominated for Oscar in best foreign-language film category
Budapest, January 14 (MTI) – The US Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has nominated Hungarian director Laszlo Nemes Jeles’s film Son of Saul for an Academy Award in the best foreign-language film category.
Son of Saul was recently awarded a Golden Globe, following several international awards including the Grand Prix at the 68th Cannes Film Festival last year.
The film takes place at the Auschwitz concentration camp and tells the story of Saul Auslaender, a fictional Jewish member of the death camp’s Sonderkommando charged with aiding with the disposal of gas chamber victims.
So far the only Hungarian film to win an Oscar in the best foreign-language film category has been Istvan Szabo’s 1981 film Mephisto.
