State award presented to Transylvanian-Hungarian politician Kiraly
Budapest, November 2 (MTI) – Deputy House Speaker Sandor Lezsak presented a state award to ethnic Hungarian politician Karoly Kiraly, founder of the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ), in Parliament on Monday.
The Hungarian Medal Middle Cross with the Star was awarded by President Janos Ader to the politician in recognition of his efforts to advocate the rights of Transylvanian Hungarians and towards their self-determination.
Kiraly, a former deputy president of the Senate of Romania and a former senator representing Covasna County (Kovaszna), in central Romania, was also recognised for his enduring role in Romania’s democratisation.
Presenting the award, Lezsak said Kiraly’s name in the 1970s and 1980s had been synonymous with hope.
Kiraly said he had made efforts to serve Transylvanian Hungarians and promote Romanian-Hungarian friendship.
