Stealing, breaking in, murder – The most dangerous regions of Hungary
Public safety in Hungary became better since 2010, but still, there are some regions in the country where the police have a lot to do every day. The Ministry of Interior and the Government Office in Budapest revealed their latest statistics regarding the most serious crimes in 2018.
Portfolio reported that between 2010 and 2018 the number of crimes decreased rapidly from 450 thousand to 110 thousand which is a remarkable improvement in the country. The improvement in public safety in the last nine years also showed a positive tendency: from 240 thousand to 100 thousand serious crimes were committed.
These crimes in Hungary are, for example, stealing, breaking, murder, sexual harassment, kidnapping, selling drugs, blackmailing and abuse.
Although the situation of public safety improved a lot in the country, unfortunately, there are some regions, towns, and cities where the authorities cannot rest. The statistics revealed that the bigger the city is, the more serious the crime tend to be.
In 2018, Szeged (Csongrád County) was the safest city in Hungary, and it is followed by Debrecen (Hajdú-Bihar County), and Nyíregyháza (Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County). On the contrary, in Győr (Győr-Moson-Sopron County) and Budapest the number of crimes did not decrease last year. Besides the Hungarian capital city, only Győr suffers from significant crimes.
To continue with, we cannot say that Győr is the city of crimes in Hungary, because the situation in some of Budapest’s districts is much worse.
The most dangerous districts in the Hungarian capital are District V, VI, and VIII. Of course, it is hard to estimate how many crimes were committed against Hungarian citizens as many tourists were also victims of crimes.
All in all, according to the statistics, many of these crimes happen in the capital.
Regarding the Hungarian counties: the worst crime situation is in Budapest, Heves and Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County, while Veszprém and Zala County are the safest regions in the country.
