The storm and heavy rains of the previous night caused the traffic regulation of several roads because of fallen trees and the accumulation of rainwater,

according to the report of the Hungarian Road Traffic Nonprofit Zrt. Norbert Sándor Pécsi, the head of the Communications Department, stated that in Borsód-Abaúj-Zemplén county, on the road connecting Hollóstető and Lillafüred, two trees fell at the 41st kilometre, so cars need to take a long detour towards Bélapátfalva or Miskolc.

In Budaörs, Pest county, a road section between two roundabouts had to be closed down because the railway underpass got flooded.

The storm’s effect on Vas county

In Vas county, some roads had to be closed down because of the rainwater accumulation, including the road leading to the Szombathely train station and the road connecting Felsőbagod and Őriszentpéter.

Some people also had to be evacuated in Vas county. 40 people from 13 buildings had to find temporary shelter in the local community centre of Hegyhátszentjakab.

The huge amount of heavy rainfall during the night caused landslides at the rampart separating the two lakes of the Vadása lake system, causing slips that led to the evacuation – reports the Vas County Department of Disaster Management.

Luckily, those affected have since been able to move back to their homes, and the rampart will be strengthened.

According to László Egyed wing commander,

firefighters of the county had to attend to 36 cases over the night.

Problems are caused by all that water filling drainage canals and causing streams to swell up mostly in the Őrség region. People do their best to fight the fallen rainwater with sandbags.

Damage to the electric supply system caused by the storm

12 towns, including Ivánc, Nemesládony, Kenéz and parts of Szombathely, also have to deal with damages done to their electric supply systems, although experts are now working on this issue.

László Egyed also reported of eight buildings in Gasztony that are currently being protected by sandbags from the flood of a swollen stream. He also reported that, although the accumulated water caused certain parts of nine roads to be closed down, no town had to be entirely isolated.

A different kind of tragedy was caused by a bus recently on the road leading to the airport, the details of which are in our previous article.
