Watch out: Storm-like winds sweeping through Hungary could reach 100km/h

A sharp change in the weather is set to hit Hungary this weekend, as a powerful cold front sweeps across the country with storm-force winds that could exceed 100 km/h in some areas.

Sudden end to spring-like weather conditions in Hungary

According to forecasts cited by Időkép, the mild and almost spring-like conditions expected on Saturday will quickly give way to a dramatic cooling on Sunday. Meteorologists say significantly colder air will pour into the Carpathian Basin from the north, funnelling through mountain passes and accelerating as it spreads across the country.

The change will be accompanied by strong and potentially damaging winds. Forecasters warn that the shift will be abrupt, with temperatures dropping by several degrees compared with Saturday.

Strongest winds expected in western regions

The first signs of the cold outbreak are likely to appear in north-western Hungary on Saturday evening, where north-westerly winds will begin strengthening. Overnight into Sunday, the gusts are expected to intensify across increasingly large areas.

The most severe conditions are predicted during late morning and early afternoon on Sunday. In Transdanubia, wind speeds could reach 70–80 km/h in many locations, while some exposed regions may experience much stronger gusts.

Meteorologists warn that the highest wind speeds — potentially between 90 and 110 km/h — are most likely in elevated and open areas, including the Bakony and around Lake Balaton, as well as in the Sopron and Kőszeg mountain regions near the Austrian border.

Cold air brings frost back

Although the wind is expected to gradually weaken during the evening hours on Sunday, strong gusts may still occur in north-eastern parts of the country even late in the day.

As the cold air mass settles in, temperatures will drop markedly, and overnight frosts are expected to return after the recent mild spell. This could create hazardous conditions, particularly for early spring vegetation and for motorists.

Nationwide warning issued

Due to the anticipated strong winds, Hungary’s national meteorological authority, HungaroMet, has issued a first-level warning covering most of the country. Officials caution that powerful gusts may cause disruptions, including fallen branches, travel hazards, and temporary power outages.

Authorities advise residents to secure loose outdoor items, remain cautious while travelling, and stay informed as forecasts may change.
