Worker dies in accident during construction of BYD factory in Hungary

A worker has died following a serious accident at the construction site of Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD’s new factory in Szeged. An official investigation has started.

According to Szegeder’s report, the fatal incident occurred on Saturday during loading and crane operations on the site. According to reports, the man suffered such severe injuries that he could not be resuscitated.

Hungarian police have launched criminal proceedings on suspicion of negligent endangerment causing death in the course of employment.

Emergency services could not save him

The National Ambulance Service confirmed that paramedics attempted to revive the victim at the scene but were unsuccessful, Telex writes.

In a statement, the service said the man sustained life-threatening injuries in the accident and died despite immediate medical intervention.

Main contractor confirms death

The project’s main contractor, AE Industry Hungary Kft., acknowledged the tragedy through BYD’s Hungarian PR manager, describing it as a “regrettable fatal accident” at the construction site.

The company stated that the accident took place during a loading and crane operation carried out by one of its subcontractors. The precise circumstances and cause have not yet been determined.

AE Industry Hungary said it, along with all subcontractors and the client, is fully cooperating with the authorities. An extensive investigation is underway to clarify the facts.

“All involved companies are committed to fully complying with applicable legislation and established safety regulations,” the contractor said, also expressing condolences to the victim’s family.

Major investment under scrutiny

The Szeged plant is one of BYD’s most significant European investments and is expected to play a key role in the company’s expansion into the EU electric vehicle market. Construction has been progressing at pace in recent months.

AE Industry Hungary has previously worked on other large-scale automotive projects, including the construction of BMW’s Hungarian factory. Earlier this year, the contractor reportedly faced a legal dispute with a local business over pricing changes related to ordered scaffolding.
