FM Szijjártó talks about “continued violations” of Hungarians’ rights in Ukraine to Austrian colleague

Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said on Saturday that he had consultations with his new Austrian counterpart about continued violations of the ethnic Hungarian community’s rights in Transcarpathia and on Ukraine’s EU integration endeavours.

The situation remained unchanged, and despite repeated promises, the Ukrainian government refused to return the Hungarian community’s rights taken away in 2015, Szijjártó said on Facebook. “This is totally unacceptable and contrary to common European rules and values,” he said, adding that he highly appreciated Beate Meinl-Reisinger’s willingness to help regarding the matter.

“So while this sad situation persists, any progress in Ukraine’s European Union accession talks is out of question,” he said.

The minister said he and his Austrian counterpart also exchanged views regarding Pride marches. They established that they had opposing views on the matter. Szijjártó said he told his Austrian counterpart that the protection of children was an absolute priority in Hungary.

“We do not want to meet the expectations of other countries’ governments but the expectations of the Hungarian people,” he said.

  1. Szijjarto made a statement about ethnic Hungarian rights in Ukraine. Okay tell us what rights? What exactly did Hungarians lose in 2015? Once you start looking at details Fidesz has nothing to talk about. The only thing I have seen is Ukrainian insistence that a significant portion of school education be conducted in Ukrainian. Well if you live in Ukraine does it not follow that you need to be able to function in the official language which is Ukrainian? Transcarpathia is in Ukraine and not in Hungary. Fidesz has for years been making trouble because it wants to drive a wedge between Hungarians and Ukrainians so that Hungarians won’t object to the continuous opposition of Fidesz to allow EU assistance to go to Ukraine to defend itself from Russia’s brutal invasion. Not a peep is made by Fidesz about very real oppression of ethnic Hungarians in Slovakia.

  2. Creditability, Trust & Respect – just totally OBLIVIATED from the name Peter Szijjarto.
“If it had a brain it would be lonely”.
The “gofer” of Orban and the “adopted” Son by “Mother Russia.
Europe, the European Union and the Global World of DEMOCRACY – the name Szijjarto no longer of any “Voice” just viewed as a PERFIDIOUS individual, that his talk on PEACE in the Ukraine, or “other” national affairs under his Ministerial ship as the Hungarian Foreign Minister – DEPLORABLE, lacking – Truth & Facts.
