Szombathely becomes Hungarian men’s basketball champion for the fifth time
Falco-Vulcano Energia KC Szombathely won their fifth championship gold medal as they defeated Arconic-Alba Fehérvár by 16 points in the fifth game of the Men’s Basketball NB I final on Sunday, winning the match 3-2 on aggregate.
The defending basketball champion overcame an 18-point deficit to beat Fehérvár 82-70 in the opening game of the final last Wednesday, and three days later came from 22 points down to win 81-80 at home. The third game on Tuesday was another home win for Szombathely, 84-78, and the fourth game followed a similar scenario, with Alba winning 72-69.
In the final game, the Arena Savaria was again packed and the teams played to the limit. In this game, the home side held their advantage fiercely, did not allow their rivals any easy baskets and deservedly won.
April’s cup winners Falco celebrated their fourth consecutive win – they were not crowned champion in 2020 due to Covid-19 – and their fifth consecutive NB I triumph after 2008, 2019, 2021 and 2022.
The team from Vasi and Fejér County were playing in their third championship final, Alba having previously come out on top in 1998/99 and 2016/17.
Also another interesting question to ponder, can Hungary produce elite basketball players?
