“Repugnance in human transactions became interesting to me” – interview with Alvin Roth
Alvin Roth, a pioneer American economist of market design and Nobel Prize winner of Economic Sciences, has been working lately with Corvinus researcher Bíró Péter on kidney exchange theories. The Stanford professor participated in the CMID-2024 conference at Corvinus in early July and told us, among other things, why his academic interest has recently turned to ethical issues in market design.
Alvin Roth interview
Your research has a lot of practical applications in our lives, like school applications or matching kidney donors and recipients. Are you driven as an economist by these questions by applying your theories to real life?
Alvin Roth: Well, economics is about real life. Economists are social scientists. We’re interested in how human beings coordinate with each other, cooperate, and compete. So even when we’re writing mathematical papers, we have at least in the back of our minds how it applies to the way people live their lives. And of course, market design is an engineering part of economics, we try to not just think about how we live our lives, but help build institutions that do what we want them to do.
The phenomenon of why human societies find certain transactions repugnant has long been a matter of scientific interest. In your lecture at the conference at Corvinus University, you examined two issues in more detail, randomized field experiments in the Econ job market, and kidney transplantation. Could you briefly summarize the results of your recent research on these two topics?
Alvin Roth: People usually have strong opinions based on little evidence about things they find repugnant. As an economist, I think that we should have good evidence when we make our decisions. And one way of that is to do experiments. But if you want to understand causality, you often need to have some randomness in your experiments. So it’s especially interesting to me that one of the things that sometimes people object to is randomizing treatments in experiments. There’s a natural feeling that it is unfair to treat some people one way and other people another way just because of randomization. In my opinion, experiments are one of the most useful tools for finding out why things happen. However, one reason we don’t see as many experiments as we should have is that people sometimes find experiments repugnant.
Transactions people find repugnant and express their moral or ethical concerns about, are very controversial. For instance, the European Parliament has just issued a statement that says they don’t think that donors of blood plasma should be paid. They think that countries should get all their blood plasma from unpaid donors. Now, Hungary is one of the places where blood plasma donors can be paid. And Hungary doesn’t have to import any blood plasma. They have enough domestically. But there are only five countries in the EU that have enough and they all pay plasma donors. The European countries that don’t pay plasma donors import plasma from the US, which exports plasma products because plasma donors can be paid in the US. So sometimes people’s feelings are contradictory. They would like that no one should be paid for plasma, but that there should be enough plasma. Those things don’t fit well together. And with kidneys, one of the big constraints we have is that it’s against the law just about everywhere in the world to pay a donor for a kidney. Corvinus researcher Bíró Peter is one of the leaders in working on kidney exchange theories about how you can get more transplants without paying donors.
Why has your academic interest recently turned to ethical issues in market design?
Alvin Roth: Sometimes the objections or the constraints on market designs are affected by ethical issues. For instance, we wouldn’t like a world where only rich people could get kidney transplants. When we talk about school choice, there have been questions in some of the cities about whether you can trade your priorities. So in most of the school districts I’ve worked with, if you want to put a child into a school and you already have a child who goes to that school, you get high priority. We tend to feel that parents should be able to drop their children off at school together. But some places allow people who don’t want their younger child to go to the same school as the older child to trade their priority to someone else. The question is, should we trade those? Some people thought that was like trading our children and you shouldn’t trade children. But we were able to convince them that it’s just about trying to find the right schools for children. So sometimes ethical intuitions can mislead us. We can do something better for the children by thinking through carefully and realizing that we’re not trading our children, we’re just trading their priorities.
You have been writing the blog Market Design since 2008, and since then you have written almost every day a post. What motivated you to start this blog and what role does it play in your professional life?
Alvin Roth: I started it for my class. I wanted the students to know that the way to think of ideas for market design is not just to read papers in economics journals but to read the newspaper and follow why markets weren’t working well. Many of my blog posts are short comments on a newspaper about something in the world. Since I started, it’s also proved to be a useful tool for me to remember things. So, it’s a kind of intellectual diary, as well. I’m currently working on a book on controversial markets and I look at my blog posts for each chapter. Market Design blog is my memory for everything related to market design.

VIDEO: Film of iconic Hungarian Gundel restaurant in TOP 3 at Santa Barbara Film Festival
The mini story is about how the Gundel experience can be for everyone, with traditionally good food, heartfelt hospitality and care. The short film has been awarded second prize at the Santa Barbara 3 Minute Short Film Festival in California.
Gundel restaurant’s short film praised in California
The short film festival, one of the most prestigious ones, celebrates the creativity and message of the films. Twelve productions from five countries were shortlisted in 2024. A short film of the iconic Gundel restaurant represented Hungary. The piece is about a girl waiting for his lover, sitting alone at a table but being served and celebrated with the help of sign language the crew of the restaurant learned prior.
The director of the short film “Gundel is for everyone!” focused on the restaurant’s commitment to CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility), conveying a message about the importance of inclusion.
Gundel is particularly proud to have an inclusive community that works day in, day out to make everyone feel welcome. This awareness has always been part of Gundel’s core values, and it also shapes the attitude of its current host team. While meeting the challenges of today’s world, we return to our roots with the same social awareness that characterised Károly Gundel. We want to be accessible and inclusive for everyone, they wrote on their website.
A very human story
They said the hearing and visually impaired can now experience the real Gundel experience in a deeper way. The waiters learnt the ten most important hospitality terms in Hungarian and international sign language. To serve the visually impaired even better, a Braille menu with the history of the food is available. In addition, accessible mobility is also a priority, Gundel wrote.
Film director Péter Bergendy said: the short film, made in collaboration with Gundel, is a very human story, which not only gives an insight into the operation of this special restaurant with a long history and a capacity for constant innovation, but also shows a beautiful example of caring for each other, which is a value that is increasingly being lost in today’s world. That is why it is important to remind ourselves again and again of how mindfulness is a simple act and yet what everyday miracles it can produce.
Below, you may watch how the Gundel team, film director Péter Bergendy, his creative team and the helpers worked on this short film to bring the Gundel experience closer to the people. It also shows how waiters learned the sign language to bring the Gundel experience closer to more people.
They believe that with an initiative like they can be one step closer to fulfilling their mission! “The Gundel is ours. We will conquer the hearts of everyone with it. That’s how Gundel will be for EVERYONE!”

The mission of the 3 Minute Film Festival
“We are the best little boutique film festival on an international platform, and located in the best place on earth — Santa Barbara, California, CA, USA. We seek, select and screen the most diverse and interesting films limited to the challenging 3 minutes of creativity”, they wrote on their website.

Hungarian player in the NBA
The Los Angeles Lakers, an NBA team based in California, have officially brought Hungarian player Vincent Valerio-Bodon on board, the NBA reports. Valerio-Bodon, who competed for the Lakers in the Summer League, impressed the team enough to earn a contract.
The Hungarian-born shooting guard, who previously played for the Boston Celtics in the Summer League last year, had a brief stint with the Lakers’ main squad in October before being reassigned to the South Bay Lakers, the team’s G-League affiliate.
According to Forbes.hu, before Valerio-Bodon, only one other Hungarian player, Kornél Dávid, had played in the association. Dávid was active between 1999 and 2001 with the Chicago Bulls, Cleveland Cavaliers, Toronto Raptors, and Detroit Pistons.
The National Basketball Association preseason for the 2024-25 season starts on 4 October, with the Lakers facing the Minnesota Timberwolves. The regular season will run from 22 October 2024 to 13 April 2025.
The Lakers, who last claimed the NBA title in 2020, made the playoffs in the past two seasons but were stopped both times by the Denver Nuggets.

Hungarian “Superman” swims around Manhattan – PHOTO GALLERY
“Yesterday I swam around Manhattan. It was unique all way long”, wrote Attila Mányoki, the Hungarian “Superman”, in an Instagram post. He completed the 50 km distance in just over 8 hours, despite strong currents and heavy river traffic. By “conquering” Manhattan Island, he achieved the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming, a feat accomplished by only 333 people. Congratulations!
Attila Mányoki swims around Manhattan and under 20 bridges
“I started at Pier “A” and my direction was to the East River, Harlem and finally the big Hudson River. In the Hudson, the second part was rough because of the traffic. Boats, yachts, ferries. I felt good myself during this fantastic journey. I spend around Manhattan 8hrs 2min. Thanks to my friends who supported me”, Mr Mányoki wrote in his Instagram post following his remarkable swim.
On Facebook, he shared more details about his experience. He mentioned that the swimming contest around Manhattan was first organised in 1915. He wrote that his average swimming speed was 6 km/h, which is faster than his usual 4 km/h. However, swimming against the current slowed him down to just 2 km/h, while on the East River, he reached a maximum speed of 9 km/h. He added that the Hudson River’s current was particularly strong due to a hurricane and subsequent rainfall, which gave him some extra speed.
The ocean and East River were both 23°C, while the Hudson River was slightly warmer at 24°C. Due to the extreme heat, he drank six litres of a specially formulated energy drink. Mányoki wrote that he performed 33,000 arm strokes and took more than 15,000 breaths while swimming. However, he never lost his strength, thanks to the drinks and a sweet bite to get rid of the salty numbness in his mouth.
Hungarian “Superman” in the Hall of Fame for Long-Distance Swimming
Mányoki mentioned that he had to stop for 15 minutes due to a cargo ship and another 30 minutes because of a tourist boat.
The Hungarian superman also noted that the average time to complete the Triple Crown challenge (Manhattan Island, the English Channel, and the Catalina Channel) is over 35 hours. His time was only 29 hours and 48 minutes for the entire 130 km distance. One of the women who completed the challenge, Elizabeth Fry, assisted Mr. Mányoki during his swim by accompanying him in a kayak.
Mr. Mányoki revealed that only 21 people from 13 countries have completed the two biggest long-distance swimming challenges, the Oceans Seven and the Triple Crown. Ten of these swimmers, including Mányoki, are members of the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame. He mentioned that after a short break, he would begin preparing for his next challenge.
According to Blikk, all swimmers are required to wear traditional swimming gear, such as textile swimsuits, swimming caps, goggles, and earplugs. Participants can only rely on their physical strength and mental endurance.

Republicans warn of Hungarian leader Orbán’s influence on Trump and U.S. policy
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s growing influence in U.S. conservative circles, particularly among allies of former President Donald Trump, is raising alarms among Republican foreign policy experts, according to a piece by Politico.
As the article states, in October 2022, a conference co-sponsored by the Conservative Partnership Institute (CPI) brought Orbán’s Foreign Minister, Péter Szijjártó, to the U.S., where he presented a pro-Russian stance on the Ukraine conflict. Attendees, including GOP strategists and policy officials, were handed pamphlets promoting Russian viewpoints, urging the U.S. to scale back aid to Ukraine and pressuring Ukrainian President Zelensky to negotiate for peace.
Orbán’s major influence in the U.S.
Orbán’s tactics seem to be filling the void left by Trump’s previous relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Unable to maintain an open bond with Putin due to the war in Ukraine, Trump now appears to align with Orbán, who has visited him twice this year. Orbán’s influence is being felt not just through political meetings but through a network of U.S. conservative think tanks, such as The Heritage Foundation, and other initiatives that push Hungary’s geopolitical interests.
The Hungarian PM’s growing presence in U.S. conservative policy circles is not limited to foreign policy. His government’s funding of U.S. think tanks, partnerships with conservative groups, and conferences on topics like migration and religious values, often veer into pro-Russian narratives. These moves worry traditional Republican officials, who view Orbán’s alignment with Russia as a threat to U.S. national security and Western alliances like NATO.
Hungary’s ties with authoritarian regimes
Simultaneously, Orbán’s ties to authoritarian regimes, including both Russia and China, have deepened. China became the largest investor in Hungary in 2023, prompting further scrutiny from U.S. leaders, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who condemned Hungary’s expanding relations with adversarial states.
“The details of China’s growing influence in Budapest should raise red flags,” McConnell said.
The Hungarian government has tried to soften its image by aligning itself with conservative causes in the U.S. However, critics point to the Hungarian leader’s ulterior motives, accusing him of leveraging these alliances to promote his country’s pro-Russian stance. Despite claims from Hungarian officials denying the spread of Russian propaganda, events hosted by U.S. think tanks with Orbán’s backing frequently include discussions on ending military support to Ukraine, pushing a narrative many experts view as aligning with Russian interests.
Orbán’s expanded influence: Danube Institute and Heritage Foundation
Heritage Foundation’s partnership with Hungary’s Danube Institute is one such example of Hungary’s expanded influence. The think tank has reportedly facilitated discussions on reducing U.S. involvement in Ukraine, sparking concerns about foreign interference in GOP policy-making. Trump himself, despite distancing his campaign from specific plans like Heritage’s Project 2025, continues to praise the Hungarian PM, underscoring his importance as a global conservative figure. This relationship has implications for U.S. foreign policy, particularly if Trump returns to the White House in 2025, with Orbán playing a significant role in shaping his worldview.
Ultimately, Orbán’s embrace of Christian conservative values in his messaging serves to endear him to the American right, while his government benefits from significant financial ties to China and Russia. Critics view Orbán as a cunning lobbyist, using his “illiberal” model to advance his geopolitical objectives while undermining Western alliances. As Orbán continues to cultivate his ties within the MAGA movement, many in the GOP foreign policy establishment fear the long-term consequences of this influence on U.S. global standing and security.

Morgan Freeman spotted in chic Budapest restaurant!
The iconic American actor, producer, and narrator, who has received numerous accolades, including an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and a nomination for a Tony Award, has been spotted in a restaurant in Budapest’s 1st district. Morgan Freeman is in Hungary!
“Eat, breathe, relax, be inspired – join the club! Chic, sexy, cosmopolitan, yet utterly local“, reads the introduction on the official website of Déryné restaurant. “Artists, authors, movie stars, designers, ballerinas, the rich and famous shared the space with local crowds over coffee, drinks, food and the decadent magic lingering around its walls“, the restaurant continues in its introduction. If it is to be believed, it is hardly surprising that Morgan Freeman chose to spend some time at Déryné restaurant while in Budapest.
24.hu discovered a Facebook post by Déryné showing Morgan Freeman with Ákos Varga, a distinguished Hungarian sommelier. “One of the greatest… breathless”, Déryné wrote alongside the photo.
We wrote HERE and HERE that Hollywood stars Jesse Eisenberg and Woody Harrelson are also in Budapest for the filming of the second sequel to the successful heist film “Now You See Me.” Eisenberg visited a magician’s shop in the heart of the Hungarian capital, where the shop owner said he tried to learn some tricks. Meanwhile, Harrelson appeared in a selfie with Sándor Noszály, a Hungarian tennis champion, taken near a Budapest padel court. Noszály mentioned that the American actor was quite good at padel.
According to index.hu, filming for the third instalment has begun, which explains why Freeman is in Budapest.
Budapest restaurant Déryné popular among Hollywood stars
Interestingly, the cast includes several well-known actors, including Rosamund Pike, Ariana Greenblatt, Daniel Radcliffe, Lizzy Caplan, Mark Ruffalo, Isla Fisher, Justice Smith, Dave Franco and Dominic Sessa. There is a chance that all of them have now arrived in Hungary.
The new sequel of the heist film is set to debut on 14th November next year.
According to index.hu, foreign film studios are drawn to Hungary because of the low taxes and the availability of experienced crews. As a result, Budapest has become one of the world’s top filmmaking hubs.
Déryné is a popular spot among Hollywood stars. Among others, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Anthony Mackie, and Danny DeVito have already enjoyed their time here.
The restaurant’s address is 3 Krisztina Square, Budapest.

Former adviser to Hungary’s Finance Minister wanted internationally, refuses to face trial in Hungary
A former adviser to Hungary’s Finance Minister, Béla Bukta, is under an international arrest warrant and faces prosecution for perjury. However, in the past, he was also charged with espionage and being part of a spy organisation known as Birodalom. He allegedly provided confidential information on Hungary to the United States, IMF and the Swiss Fund. Bukta has refused to face trial in Hungary, fearing he would not receive fair treatment.
Former adviser to Hungary’s Finance Minister under international arrest warrant
Telex reports that Béla Bukta, a former adviser to Hungary’s Finance Minister and a key figure in the Orbán government, is currently sought under an international arrest warrant and faces prosecution for perjury charges. Despite these accusations, Bukta, previously granted political asylum in the United States, has stated he has no intention of returning to Hungary to stand trial. Bukta’s career includes roles in the Prime Minister’s Office, the Parliament’s economic committee, and the Ministry of National Development, as well as experience with the World Bank.
Espionage and spy organisation allegations
As previously mentioned, Béla Bukta, currently residing in the United States, faces prosecution for perjury and is under an international arrest warrant. Alongside his Hungarian counterparts, Bukta was previously charged with espionage and accused of being part of a spy organisation named Birodalom (meaning ‘empire’), which allegedly spied on Hungary for the United States, the IMF and the Swiss Fund.
However, the court eventually acquitted the former adviser to Hungary’s Finance Minister and his associates of the espionage charges in a final judgment. Following this, they were prosecuted for perjury. Bukta, who left Hungary in 2019, was granted political asylum in the United States, where authorities believed he would not receive a fair trial in Hungary.
Birodalom’s spies
In a convoluted espionage case, the former adviser to Hungary’s Finance Minister and others were accused of being part of a spy organisation called Birodalom, led by M.N., who allegedly instructed Bukta to hand over classified defence documents to a US embassy officer in 2008 and disclose financial details to the IMF in 2010. The case, however, was fraught with confusion.
Before the espionage charges surfaced, M.N. was under police investigation not as a spy, but as the supposed victim of a homicide, with a theft of valuable art adding to the mystery. It later emerged that M.N. had faked his death, and the espionage charges stemmed from this bizarre sequence of events. The current perjury charges against Bukta, the former adviser to Hungary’s Finance Minister, can also be traced back to this convoluted case.
A case of increasing complexity
The case against Béla Bukta became increasingly complex when, before the espionage charges, he was suspected of involvement in an online defamation campaign against former state secretary Vilmos Vályi-Nagy. During a search of Bukta’s home, police seized an external hard drive that contained a document marked as “Confidential” from the Ministry of Defence, outlining the Hungarian Defence Forces’ ten-year strategy.
Bukta was accused of passing this document to the US Embassy on M.N.’s orders. However, the espionage case was weak, as Bukta argued the evidence had been planted on the hard drive after the fact. His defence was strengthened by evidence of police negligence, as proper procedures for handling the seized evidence had not been followed, thereby undermining the credibility of the charges.

FM Szijjártó calls US Ambassador Pressman a ‘leading figure’ of Hungarian opposition
David Pressman, the US ambassador to Budapest, is “a leading figure of the Hungarian opposition”, and his statements must be handled as such, the foreign minister said on Thursday.
At a press conference after an informal European Union foreign ministers’ meeting in Brussels, Péter Szijjártó said in response to a question concerning Pressman’s criticism of Hungary’s “peace mission” that the US ambassador was “an opposition activist and one of the leading figures of the Hungarian opposition”.
“His statements must be assessed accordingly,” Szijjártó said, according to a ministry statement. “And if I want to talk about the contents of his opposition activist statements, then I could say that interestingly, when the Italian prime minister went to China, and said that China was an essential partner for dialogue in the current fragile international situation, then the opposition activist did not activate himself.”
“Or when President Zelensky called Donald Trump, he did not express any condemnation, or when the Ukrainian foreign minister recently visited China, we could not hear any criticism from him,” he added.
“So it is obvious that his statements came from and were inspired by his opposition position,” he said.
Commenting on criticism voiced by his Lithuanian counterpart, Szijjártó said Gabrielius Landsbergis was “one of the most pro-war politicians” in Europe.
“He is competing for the title of most pro-war politician; he regularly criticises Hungary’s pro-peace position. I believe his assessment of the situation cannot be considered realistic in any aspect,” he added.

Hungarian man arrested for smuggling U.S. military devices to Russia
A Hungarian man has been arrested in San Francisco on suspicion of conspiring to illegally export 200 U.S. military radio communication devices to Russian government entities, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington, D.C., as reported by 444.
On Monday, a 46-year-old man named Bence Horváth was detained in San Francisco. He is accused of “conspiring with others to illegally export U.S.-origin radio communications technology to Russian government end users without authorisation,” as reported by various news outlets.
The gravity of the case is highlighted by the fact that officials from five different agencies were involved in announcing the arrest. These include U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves, Assistant Attorney General for National Security Affairs Matthew Olsen, Special Agent in Charge of the New Orleans Field Office of Homeland Security Investigations, Eric DeLaune, Special Agent in Charge of the New Orleans Field Office of HSI, Darrin K. Jones, Special Agent in Charge of the Southeast Regional Office of the Defense Criminal Investigative Service, Trey McClish, and Special Agent in Charge of the Dallas Regional Office of the Department of Commerce’s Office of Export Controls.
Horváth and his associates are believed to have begun negotiations in January 2023 with a small U.S. radio distribution company. Their objective was to purchase and export U.S.-made military-grade radios and related accessories to Russia.
In the months that followed, Horváth successfully acquired 200 military-grade radios, which he intended to ship to Russia via a Latvian transport service. However, the attempt was thwarted when U.S. Customs and Border Protection seized the shipment, preventing the radios from reaching Russian users.
Horváth accused of smuggling military radios via international network
According to the prosecutor’s statement, Horváth was arrested on 23 August 2024, upon his arrival at San Francisco International Airport. Authorities allege that Horváth, along with others, managed a multinational procurement network that worked directly with various Russian government agencies. This network was involved in large-scale projects, such as constructing operational radio communications systems in Russia’s Kursk region near the Russian-Ukrainian border, as reported by 444.
Horváth is said to have personally arranged the purchase and smuggling of U.S.-origin radio communications technology to Russian government end-users, utilising a network of subsidiaries in Spain, Serbia, Hungary, and Latvia.
“The indictment alleges that the defendant attempted to purchase military-grade radios for Russian organisations using a multinational supply chain to evade law enforcement,” said Deputy Attorney General Olsen. “The Department of Justice remains committed to dismantling and prosecuting the criminal networks that continue to fuel Russian aggression abroad and threaten our collective security.” Further details of the investigation remain unknown.

Emmy Award winner American actor is in Budapest!
Sándor Noszály, a Hungarian tennis champion, met Woody Harrelson in Budapest, and they posted a selfie made near a padel court. That was not the first time he met the Emmy Award-winning Hollywood star. In 2014, they bumped into each other in Beverly Hills.
According to Blikk, a Hungarian tabloid, Noszály captured their photo with “1 of the best”. He also posted a quotation from the American actor: “Never was disillusioned with acting because I love acting.”
They took the photo near a padel court, probably after playing. Padel (Spanish: pádel), also sometimes called padel tennis, is a racket sport of Mexican origin, typically played in doubles on an enclosed court slightly smaller than a doubles tennis court. Although padel shares the same scoring system as tennis, the rules, strokes, and technique are different. The balls used are similar but with a little less pressure. The main differences are that the court has walls, and the balls can be played off them in a similar way as in the game of squash and that solid, stringless bats are used.
In May 2022, Noszály took a selfie with Lionel Messi in Paris:

Harrelson is in Budapest due to the shooting of the second sequel of the popular ‘Now You See Me’ film. Noszály said the American actor was good at padel.

7 essential tips for Hungarian tourists planning their perfect USA getaway
Sponsored content
Planning a trip to the USA? It’s an exciting adventure that promises a mix of breathtaking landscapes, vibrant cities, and unique cultural experiences. As a Hungarian tourist, there are a few things you’ll need to keep in mind to make the most of your visit. Whether you’re navigating bustling streets or enjoying tranquil lake house vacations, these tips will help ensure your journey is smooth and enjoyable.
Without further ado, let’s dive into the essentials every Hungarian needs to know for a memorable American adventure!
1. Check the Visa Requirements for a Seamless Entry
Hungarian citizens who wish to visit the United States for tourism typically do not need a visa if their stay is for 90 days or less. Instead, they can travel under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP), which allows nationals of certain countries, including Hungary, to travel to the U.S. for tourism, business, or transit without obtaining a visa.
However, Hungarian citizens must obtain an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) before traveling. Here are the key steps and requirements:
Steps to Apply for ESTA
- Application: Complete the ESTA application online. You will need to provide personal information, passport details, travel plans, and answer security-related questions.
- Payment: There is a fee for the ESTA application, which must be paid online using a credit or debit card.
- Approval: Most ESTA applications are approved within minutes, but it is recommended to apply at least 72 hours before departure.
- Travel with ESTA: Once approved, the ESTA is valid for multiple trips over two years or until your Hungarian passport expires, whichever comes first.
2. Finding Affordable Flights to the USA
When it comes to planning a trip to the USA, securing cost-effective flights early on is essential. By following some key strategies, you can find deals that won’t break the bank.
Book Early
It’s no secret that booking your flights well in advance often leads to lower prices. Airlines tend to offer their best rates several months ahead of departure dates.
Flexible Dates
Flexibility with your travel dates can significantly impact your airfare. Tools like Google Flights or Skyscanner allow you to compare prices across a range of dates, helping you find the most affordable options.
Use Fare Alerts
Setting up fare alerts can be a game-changer. Websites like Kayak, Airfarewatchdog, or LOT offer services that notify you when flight prices drop for your chosen routes.
3. Explore Iconic American Landmarks
From the hustle and bustle of New York City’s Times Square to the serene surroundings of the Grand Canyon, the USA boasts a plethora of iconic landmarks that capture the essence of the American spirit. Start your adventure in the east with a visit to the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor, a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. Don’t forget to stroll through Central Park and experience the unique urban oasis.
Next, head south to Washington, D.C., where history comes to life. Tour the National Mall, home to the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, and the moving Vietnam Veterans Memorial. For a dose of culture, make a stop at the Smithsonian Institution’s array of museums, where you can spend days exploring art, history, and science exhibits.
As you journey westward, the charm of Route 66 awaits. This historic highway, known as the “Main Street of America,” stretches from Illinois to California. Along the way, you’ll find quirky roadside attractions, vintage diners, and small towns that embody Americana.
Of course, no trip out west would be complete without visiting the awe-inspiring national parks. From the geothermal wonders of Yellowstone and the majestic cliffs of Yosemite to the red rock formations of Zion and the lush rainforests of the Olympics, America’s natural beauty is unparalleled.
4.Opt for Lake House Rentals During Your Visit
Nestled in the Sierra Nevada mountains, Lake Tahoe is known for its crystal-clear waters and breathtaking alpine scenery. Whether you’re interested in skiing during winter or hiking and boating in the summer, this destination offers a perfect blend of relaxation and outdoor adventure.
If wine tasting and picturesque landscapes sound appealing, the Finger Lakes region is a must-visit. Renowned for its vineyards and charming small towns, this area offers a peaceful getaway with plenty of activities such as kayaking, fishing, and exploring the quaint local markets.
For something truly unique, consider a stay at Lake Powell, where dramatic red rock canyons meet the blue waters of this man-made reservoir. Houseboat rentals are particularly popular here, allowing you to explore the scenic waterways at your own pace.
Simply put, a lake house rental is the perfect way to enjoy the stunning scenery of the USA during your visit.
5. Cultural Tips: Blending in Like a Local
Blending in with the local American culture can greatly enhance your travel experience. One of the most noticeable cultural traits in the USA is the friendliness and openness of the people. 7. Understanding American Tipping Etiquette
Tipping in the United States can be quite different from what you might be used to in Hungary. It’s an integral part of the American service industry and is often expected in various situations. Here are some guidelines to help you navigate the tipping culture with ease:
Restaurants and Cafés
When dining out, tipping your server is customary. A standard tip is around 15-20% of the total bill before tax. If the service was exceptional, you might consider tipping closer to 20%. For counter service or take-out orders, a small tip of $1-$2 is appreciated but not required.
Hotels
Hotel staff often depend on tips as part of their income. Here’s a breakdown of common tipping practices:
- Housekeeping: $2-$5 per night, left daily in an envelope or with a note.
- Bellhop: $1-$2 per bag when they help you with your luggage.
- Concierge: Depending on the service rendered, $5-$10.
Taxis and Ride-Sharing
For taxi drivers and ride-sharing services such as Uber or Lyft, a tip of 10-15% of the fare is standard. Always check your ride-sharing app, as some include an option to tip directly through the app itself.
Other Services
Here are a few more instances where tipping is expected:
- Hairdressers and Barbers: 15-20% of your bill.
- Tour Guides: $5-$10 per person for a half-day tour and $10-$20 per person for a full-day tour.
- Valet Parking: $2-$5 when your car is returned to you.
Understanding these tipping norms will not only enhance your travel experience but also show your appreciation for the services provided. You’re now ready to enjoy your trip and blend in seamlessly with the locals!

U.S. imposes sanctions on 2 Hungarian entities with Russian ties
The U.S. has placed sanctions on two Hungarian entities, as announced by U.S. Ambassador to Hungary, David Pressman, on the social media platform X.
Hungarian entities sanctioned by U.S.
Pressman informed Hungary’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 23 August about the decision. One of the targeted entities had been collaborating with the Russian energy sector and was involved in the planned construction of the Paks II nuclear power plant. The other entity manufactured weapons for the Russian military, 24.hu writes.
“We remain deeply concerned about the Hungarian government’s choice to strengthen its ties with the Kremlin, which continues to leave Hungary dependent on Russian energy,”
Pressman added.
According to Telex, the weapons manufacturer in question is Mátrix Metál Group Ltd., which is currently undergoing liquidation. This company had been supplying products to a Russian firm called Exiton, which were used in the production of Sukhoi fighter jets. Mátrix Metál is registered in an apartment building on Korányi Sándor Street in Budapest’s 8th district, and it is run by a Latvian national, Vladimirs Boreckis.

Russia uses Western technology in military production
US authorities have grown increasingly concerned about Russia’s military industry, particularly companies producing fighter jets, using Western technology in aircraft deployed in Ukraine. A Radio Free Europe investigation from May revealed that electronic components for Sukhoi jets were being supplied to Russia from the EU,
including from Cyprus and Hungary.
On 23 August, shortly after Ambassador Pressman’s statement, the U.S. State Department issued an official release announcing additional sanctions. These included a Hungarian-based branch of a Russian company.
The sanctioned Russian firm, Меzsregionstroj (referred to as MezhRegionStroj in Hungary), is a construction company involved in Russia’s Vostok project. This massive oil infrastructure endeavour aims to extract and transport oil from the Arctic region, with a goal of producing up to 100 million tons of crude annually, according to the U.S. State Department. The US government has placed sanctions on the Russian firm and its numerous subsidiaries.

Hungarian art centre to open in New York in 2025
Starting in 2025, a five-story building in New York will be dedicated to promoting Hungarian culture, with a special emphasis on folk traditions. This Hungarian art centre will feature a restaurant, gallery, and community spaces.
The Tulipán Foundation, officially known as the Réka Darida Foundation, plans to reopen its five-story building at 1065 Madison Avenue in New York in 2025 as the Tulipán Center for Hungarian Arts, according to Index.
As stated on their website, Tulipán represents a lively blend of tradition and modernity, deeply rooted in the richness of Hungarian culture. “Tulipán embodies a vibrant and dynamic fusion of tradition and innovation, rooted in the richness of Hungarian culture. By celebrating Hungary’s past and present, and showcasing the diverse and multifaceted expressions of its art and life, Tulipán offers visitors a rich and layered experience that captures the promise and spirit of the Hungarian people.”
The centre will include a restaurant, art gallery, and community spaces, all aimed at continuing the foundation’s mission of sharing the beauty of Hungarian culture with the world.
The Darida Réka Scholarship Programme, run by the foundation, provides one-year scholarships to exceptionally talented artists specialising in the folk arts and crafts of the Carpathian Basin or those rooted in Hungarian historical traditions. This programme supports artists both in Hungary and in neighbouring countries.
Preserving Hungarian culture in New York
The Tulipán Foundation’s mission is to create new opportunities for knowledge transfer through educational, artistic, and community programmes. It aims to support Hungarian art, with a particular focus on folk art and its contemporary interpretations, and to present these to a wider American audience. Additionally, the foundation serves the Hungarian American diaspora through its various programmes.
The 2023 Fellows exhibition, curated by Ágnes Fülemile, a researcher at the Institute of Ethnography, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, was one of the foundation’s recent events. The exhibition, which ran until 20 May at the Tulipán Gallery in New York, successfully showcased the works of Hungarian artists who were awarded the Réka Darida Foundation Contemporary Crafts Fellowship, as Magyar Hírlap reported.
The foundation is also connected to the Festival of Crafts, held from 17 to 20 August this year. According to their website, three participating artists will receive awards in collaboration with the Federation of Folk Art Associations.
The Tulipán Foundation first announced a call for applications in 2021, intending to support Hungarian artists and educational institutions during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic. The first exhibition of works by supported artists was held at the Tulipán Gallery, located at the foundation’s headquarters.
Réka Darida, who was born in Csenger and emigrated to New York in 2000, was a dedicated member and prominent supporter of the Hungarian art and community scene in New York until her passing. Since 2020, her family has continued the foundation’s work.

Blinken talks about deep friendship between the USA and Hungary on Hungary’s National Day
US State Secretary Anthony Blinken on Tuesday greeted Hungary, marking the country’s national holiday.
In a statement issued by the US Department of State, Blinken congratulated Hungarians “commemorating more than a millennium of your nation’s rich history”.
“On this day of celebration, it is my hope that we can work towards a closer relationship between the United States and Hungary, rooted in democratic values, shared security, and prosperity. That is what the deep friendship between our peoples, and the rich history between our nations deserves,” the statement said.
Noting that Hungary became a NATO member 25 years ago, Blinken said “Hungary was welcomed into NATO because of its commitment to a democratic future. That commitment, like the deep bonds between our people, should be protected and form the bedrock of Hungary-United States relations.”
Hundreds of thousands attend national holiday programmes in Budapest, says government spokesman
Several hundred thousand people attended programmes of the August 20 national holiday and watched the evening fireworks show in Budapest, State Secretary Zoltán Kovács, who heads the operative staff coordinating the events, said on Facebook on Wednesday.
Kovács noted that the evening show had been postponed by one hour due to the weather, and thanked spectators for their patience. He added that all programmes had been completed without major disturbances. He noted “the inconvenience and the delays caused by rain” but said that there had been no accidents during the programmes.
Until 11pm on Tuesday, the police had secured 324 programmes nationwide, Kovács said, and thanked the authorities and programme organisers for their efforts to make the events “safe and successful”.

Statement by Secretary Antony J. Blinken on Hungary’s National Day
Read the statement by US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken sent to us on Hungary’s 20 August National Day.
“On behalf of the United States of America, I congratulate the people of Hungary as you celebrate Saint Stephen’s Day, commemorating more than a millennium of your nation’s rich history.
Twenty-five years ago, Hungary was admitted to the most successful defensive alliance in the history of the world. Hungary was welcomed into NATO because of its commitment to a democratic future. That commitment, like the deep bonds between our people, should be protected and form the bedrock of Hungary-United States relations.
On this day of celebration, it is my hope that we can work towards a closer relationship between the United States and Hungary, rooted in democratic values, shared security, and prosperity. That is what the deep friendship between our peoples, and the rich history between our nations, deserves.”
