Wizz Air is re-launching two popular flights from Budapest

hotel resort hurghada egypt

Wizz Air is re-launching two popular flights from Budapest this autumn, with the low-cost airline flying to Hurghada in Egypt and Aqaba in Jordan.

Wizz Air will operate two flights a week between Budapest and Aqaba on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 3 October.

The low-cost airline will fly to Hurghada once a week on Saturdays from 5 November.

Fares on both routes start at just over HUF 20,000 forints (EUR 49).

As we wrote today, Qatar’s airports are not suitable to welcome millions of guests for this year’s football world cup. Therefore, they will need help from nearby airports. One is the Al Maktoum International Airport at Dubai World Central, or DWC, where the number of airlines buying extra slots is rising. One of those companies is Hungary’s Wizz Air, which aims to have its share of the increasing passenger traffic, details HERE.

Cigarettes worth EUR 4.9m smuggled from Dubai to Hungary in cargo plane

debrecen airport

The customs and tax authority (NAV) has seized a consignment of 23 million untaxed cigarettes with a street value of 2 billion forints (EUR 4.9m) from four Polish trucks near the international airport in Debrecen, in eastern Hungary, the authority said on Monday.

The cigarettes made in the United Arab Emirates were smuggled by an international ring to Hungary by a cargo plane arriving at the airport from Dubai, NAV told MTI in a statement.

The cigarettes were seized in a raid carried out in a coordinated operation by Europol and Eurojust which also covered Austria, Poland and the Czech Republic.

Four of the ring’s members have so far been identified, NAV said, adding that three of the members are foreign nationals and the fourth one is a Hungarian citizen. The Hungarian accomplice tasked with arranging the transfer of the cigarettes to Europe was arrested in a hotel in Debrecen. A house search of the man revealed documents, electronic files, seven luxury cars, foreign currency worth 300 million forints and 49 high value wristwatches, NAV said. The man has been taken into pre-trial detention.

Authorities have issued an international warrant against the three other suspects.

Ambassador Munis: Malaysian-Hungarian relations are cordial and friendly – INTERVIEW

Malaysia ambassador Hungary Budapest

H.E. Ambassador Francisco Munis is a career diplomat and currently the Ambassador of Malaysia to Hungary. He is also the Malaysian Ambassador to Slovenia and North Macedonia. He talked about his previous diplomatic posts, his favourite Hungarian dishes, the attractions he would recommend you to visit in Malaysia, the Malaysian students studying at Hungarian universities, and he even gave advice to Malaysian tourists visiting Hungary.

Had you visited Hungary in the past before you were appointed Ambassador to Budapest?

Prior to my appointment as the Ambassador to Hungary, I have never set foot in Budapest. Although I did visit some nearby countries and heard a lot about Budapest, it was not opportune for me then to pay a visit. Now that I am residing in Budapest, I have ample of opportunity to visit not only Budapest but the whole of Hungary. It has been over a year now since I last arrived in Budapest and I’ve learned more about Hungary by visiting places and meeting people.

What was your first thought when you were told that the Hungarian capital would provide the setting for the next important chapter in your life?

The eastern European region was foreign to me. Months before my arrival, I took the effort to read as much as I could about the Malaysian-Hungarian relations, the region and the dynamics of Hungary within its region. Indeed, Budapest provided a new chapter in my career and personal life, seeing the world from the Hungarian and eastern European perspectives.

I am also privileged that since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1969, the Malaysian-Hungarian relations is at all times, cordial and friendly. At the bilateral level, both countries have a very good political relation. Both countries also collaborated closely at the multilateral fora. These has facilitated my job to promote and enhance further the friendship between our two countries.

Please tell us a little about your previous diplomatic posts. Which place was the most interesting professionally? And which one was the most exotic?

I have served in several countries for my diplomatic postings. From local culture, politics, geography, demography, environment to its international trade, investment and tourism potentials, every country is different in background and every country is of importance to Malaysia. I would say that all the countries that I have served before including Hungary, were both interesting and exotic in their own way.

Hungary in particular, would be a professionally interesting post, especially in reviving all the pre-pandemic bilateral initiatives that were planned but disrupted during the pandemic years and of course in recommending post-pandemic, new exchanges.

There are many excellent products made in Hungary. Which Hungarian products would likely be in demand in Malaysia? And what kind of Malaysian products can Hungarian customers purchase here?

If we look at Malaysia’s imports from Hungary, it is traditionally and largely dominated by machineries and electrical related products. Likewise, Malaysia’s exports to Hungary were also largely dominated by electrical and electronic products, as well as machineries and some agricultural commodities, such as palm oil and rubber based products. We would like to see these traditional products be complimented with new ones. We have been encouraging both our exporters and importers and business people to look into new areas such tourism related products, environmental technology, food and services.

Regional conflicts around the globe are on the front page of newspapers. When it comes to international and regional volatility, what is Malaysia’s position?

Malaysia puts a lot of value to its relations with other countries and has always urged all parties to address any volatile situation carefully and in the best manner possible. Conflicts could only lead to consequences. For Malaysia, peace, stability and prosperity must always be maintained, in its own region or in other regions.

Malaysia ambassador Hungary Budapest

Malaysia’s position in any volatile situations has always been in line with and in compliance to international law and the United Nations’ Charter. In promoting peace, Malaysia has always called for efforts to restrain and refrain from provocative actions and promoted to all parties to play role to facilitate peaceful dialogue. Malaysia always believes in upholding the principles of the UN Charter and abiding with the UNGA Resolutions.

In its own region, Malaysia’s position for peace is also reflected in its regional grouping of ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations). For example, Malaysia fully subscribes to the ASEAN’s 1976 Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia, which embodies the universal principles of peaceful coexistence and friendly cooperation.

If we look at the recent Joint Communiqué of the 55th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on 3 August 2022, ASEAN and Malaysia in particular continue to reaffirm respect for sovereignty, political independence and territorial integrity, as well as reiterating the call for compliance with international law and the United Nations Charter. The Joint Communique also underlined the importance of an immediate cessation of hostilities and the creation of an enabling environment for the peaceful resolution of conflict and supported the efforts of the United Nations in the search for a peaceful solution.

Simply, for Malaysia, peace must prevail.

Let’s come back to Hungary. You aim to raise awareness of Malaysia’s tourism and trade values through a number of events. What are the most important upcoming events organized by the Embassy?

Based on Malaysia’s tourism data, between the five-year period 2017-2021, Malaysia registered 32,259 Hungarians visiting Malaysia with the highest recorded during pre-Covid pandemic years (2017-2019) and fell to the lowest during the Covid pandemic years (2020-2021).

In terms of bilateral trade, based on the Malaysian trade data, between the five-year period of 2017-2021, total accumulated trade stood at Ringgit Malaysia 7.84 billion (about Euro 1.7 billion) and steadily hovered around Euro 340 million a year even during the pandemic years.

In terms of tourists and trade exchange, we need to increase the volumes and also work towards increasing investment opportunities for both sides.

We have been working closely with our Malaysian and Hungarian partners to promote Malaysia as a destination for Hungarians and we aim to organize more tourism promotion events in Hungary.

We have also been working closely with our Malaysian partners by meeting up with many Hungarian companies and encouraging them to look towards Malaysia for their industry needs.

While, the volume of investment is minimal and much to be desired, we hope that our effort to promote investment opportunities in Malaysia will soon bear result with more Hungarian investors looking towards Malaysia. We are also looking at Malaysia’s participation in local trade and investment events and likewise inviting Hungarians enterprises to participate in similar events in Malaysia.

We hope that soon more new agreements / MOUs, by both public and private sectors will be signed between Malaysia and Hungary. We also hope to see more high-level visits between both countries.

How many Malaysian students enroll in Hungarian universities each year with the help of Stipendium Hungaricum? What are the general experiences of Malaysian students studying in Hungary?

Thanks to the Government of Hungary, we have 30 placements per year for Malaysians to study in Hungary at the various level of studies since 2018. Currently, we have about 80 students all over Hungary studying under the Stipendium Hungaricum programme. We also have some self-sponsored students studying in Hungary. We are encouraging more Malaysians to take the opportunity to study in Hungary under the programme. Most Malaysian students intending to study abroad preferred traditional destinations. In recent years however, many were also looking to study at non-traditional destinations including Hungary.

By studying at new destinations such as Hungary, it would open up new experiences to young Malaysians. Those Malaysians who have completed their studies in Hungary described their experiences as enriching and something different … it is like saying I have graduated from Hungary and it catches attention, as in Malaysia one rarely heard of people graduating from non-traditional destinations. Likewise, Malaysia also welcomes Hungarians to study in Malaysia either by their own or under the various scholarships offered by Malaysian entities to foreign students.

You have been in our country for more than a year. Apart from Budapest, what other Hungarian cities have you visited?

Throughout the one year, I have been around Hungary visiting places and meeting people. I have been to Debrecen and Szeged. I also ventured into other towns such as Miskolc, Gyor, Komarom, the Balaton area, Gyula and some other border towns. I look forward to visit more places in Hungary such as Pecs and Sopron.

What advice or recommendation would you give to Malaysian tourists who are planning to visit Hungary?

We noticed that the number of Malaysian tourists to Hungary is beginning to pick up after the ease of pandemic border restrictions. This is a good sign. The tourism industry provided the platform for people to learn more about the culture of the country they are visiting and this would help to bridge connectivity between the people of our countries.

We would advise and recommend that while Malaysians enjoy their time in Hungary, they should also strive to be responsible visitors by adhering to local laws and they should be well prepared in terms of their documentation and funding before visiting, so as to avoid disruptions during their visit. In the case of emergency, the Embassy is here to facilitate.

What are the three must-see attractions Hungarian tourists should explore when visiting your country?

We welcome Hungarian tourists to Malaysia! The people of Hungary and Malaysia can take the opportunity to visit each other with ease, as both countries facilitated visa free entry for tourism purposes under our bilateral agreement. Malaysian people are also the most-friendliest in welcoming tourists.

I would say Malaysia offers many attractions. The three must experience moments would be the cultural varieties, the beaches and islands and the flora and fauna. All these can be experienced differently in the three different parts of Malaysia, which are the Peninsular Malaysia and the Malaysian Borneo of Sabah and Sarawak.

Other than that, Malaysia also offers industry and niche tourism products. For ease of reference these websites offer extensive information on Malaysian tourism HERE, HERE and HERE.

Malaysia has been welcoming back international travelers after the full reopening of its borders beginning 1 April 2022, two years after the COVID-19 pandemic-related border closures. I would like to welcome all Hungarian travelers visiting Malaysia, Selamat Datang ke Malaysia !

The last question is about Hungarian gastronomy, we just simply cannot miss it. What is your favorite local dish and why?

The Goulash and the Lángos were introduced to me on the day of my arrival in Budapest. I must say that these two dishes go well together and one of my local favourite, as it is tasty and easier to consume anytime of the day. Both dishes are also similar to what we have in Malaysia although prepared differently. I think both these dishes are also popular in Malaysia. I was informed that there is one Malaysian-Hungarian couple who is now residing in Malaysia selling goulash and langos at their home restaurant. There are also many other restaurateurs in Malaysia popularizing these two dishes in their restaurants. On the same sentiment, I wish that one day, there will be a Malaysian restaurant in Hungary.

Kyrgyz cultural festival in Budapest

Hungary, Kyrgyzstan ready to advance cooperation 22

A cultural festival will be held to mark the 30th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Hungary and Kyrgyzstan in Budapest between Thursday and Sunday.

According to a statement from the Kyrgyz embassy, the cultural days will start with a gala concert at the Budapest Music Center on Thursday night, featuring Kyrgyz popular music, a fashion show and an exhibition of Kyrgyz artists.

The festival has been organised under an agreement on bilateral cooperation between the foreign ministries of the two countries in 2022 – 2025, signed by Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó during an official visit to Kyrgyzstan in May.

Non-EU migrant labour key to Hungary growth

africa worker

The employment of migrant workers from outside the European Union is key to Hungary’s economic growth, Hungarian temporary employment agency Work Force said on Monday.

Hungary’s growing manual labour shortage woes are forcing businesses to look for new ways to tackle the problem, Work Force said in a statement, noting that it had recently helped with the employment of a group of 40 Filipino migrant workers in Veszprem, in western Hungary.

The agency said it expected over 1,000 more foreign workers to enter the Hungarian labour market in the near future.

Demand for migrant workers is highest in the manufacturing sector but they are also needed at hotels, hospitality venues and service companies, Work Force said.

Work Force has eight offices across Hungary and provides services on a continuous basis to 300 clients.

As we wrote earlier, labour shortages cause flight delays and cancellations at Budapest Airport, details HERE.

You know how to play online บาคาร่า in an online casino

Baccarat is a well-known online casino card game at land-based casinos. However, not many people are aware that there are variations in this card game. Betsoft, Microgaming, Evoplay, RTG, NetEnt, and Pragmatic Play continue to provide new baccarat variations to the market. For example, it is unusual for casinos to collect massive points for บาคาร่า video games exclusive to their playing platforms. Finally, gamers will get spoiled with options. Also, you do not need to visit a physical online casino to play those baccarat video games. On online casino applications, you can seize the action at the cross. Here is a quick look at the many baccarat online casino video games available on the best บาคาร่า websites.

General บาคาร่า Rules:

If you learn to play บาคาร่า, you should start with what we’ve already covered. However, aces through nine have tens, and face cards have no numerical value. The dealer begins each round of play by dealing four face-up cards: two to the banker and two to the player. The goal of this game is to wager on the hand has the total points. If the card sum exceeds this value, the first number is taken down, with a sum hand value of four. The บาคาร่า game goal is to identify which of nine hands is closest and put a wager before the cards.

Tie and Stand:

Participants in a บาคาร่า game can choose between two options: tie or stand. If a player decides to draw, an extra card gets handed, increasing the number of cards to three. It is also known as a “hit,” which means that the player requests a card. When a player stands in a casino, they indicate that they do not want to draw and want to continue playing with the previous value of their hand. When a participant can hit or stand, few rules apply to the banker and the player. Let’s have a look at these guidelines in more detail below.

Player’s hand:

The บาคาร่า game is decided by the player’s hand, as the banker’s moves are determined by whether the player is tied or standing. The rules governing player activities are straightforward: Draw a third card if the player’s initial total is five or fewer. If the player has a total of 6 or 7, stand.

Live Baccarat Rules in บาคาร่า:

Once you’ve learned the traditional บาคาร่า rules, you may confidently play in any media, including live dealer games. Although the game’s presentation may alter significantly due to the presence of a live dealer and other players, it is played in the same manner as in a land-based casino using internet software.

The Banker’s Hand:

The player always chooses the initial action in บาคาร่า, and the banker’s options are known step by step. If the player’s hand has come to a halt, the banker applies the same beginning rule as the player. It indicates that if the banker has a hand value of 0 to 5, he will hit; else, he will stand. When the player draws a third card, things become more tricky.

Orbán receives Vietnamese House Speaker Vuong Dinh Hue

Vuong Dinh Hue Vietnam

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán received Vuong Dinh Hue, Speaker of the Vietnamese National Assembly, at his office on Tuesday.

The officials discussed deepening bilateral cooperation.

The Vietnamese speaker congratulated Orbán on his landslide election victory, telling the prime minister that the result showed the government put the interests of the Hungarian people first.

Judit Varga, the justice minister, Péter Szijjártó, the minister of foreign affairs and trade, and János Csák, the minister of culture and innovation, also attended the meeting.

It was noted that each year 200 Vietnamese students have the chance to study in Hungary, and the trade volume of the two countries is on an upswing.

Bilateral cooperation may be deepened in the areas of military security and industry, tourism, agriculture and pharmaceuticals.

Vitenamese House Speaker held talks in Hungary – update

vietnam hungary house speakers

Vietnam is Hungary’s key partner in South-East Asia, Speaker of Parliament László Kövér said on Monday, after talks with Vuong Dinh Hue, the head of Vietnam’s National Assembly.

While agricultural exports to Vietnam surpass imports, Hungary has “much to do” in developing bilateral economic ties, Kövér said in a joint statement after the talks.

Noting that Hue led a delegation of various experts, Kövér said the visit was “promising” regarding inter-governmental, scientific and educational cooperation.

The heads of parliament discussed the tied-aid programme Vietnam extended to the Hungarian parliament during the coronavirus pandemic.

Kövér said the global economy was “hopefully getting back on track”, including key sectors like tourism, one of the most dynamically developing economic areas.

Hue noted the two countries’ “long historic friendship”, despite the geographical distance. The visit strengthened the strategic cooperation between Hungary and Vietnam, he said.

He said the talks focused on inter-parliamentary and economic cooperation, as well as on opportunities to develop ties in science, research and education. Several university rectors were members of the Vietnamese delegation, in hope of building cooperation with Hungarian universities, he said.

The Institute of Hungarian Culture is scheduled to open this year in Vietnam, he added.

After the talks, the speakers signed cooperation agreements between the Hungarian parliament and the Vietnamese National Assembly, as did the two countries’ justice ministries.

Hue is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on Tuesday.

UPDATE

Addressing a Hungarian-Vietnamese legislation seminar in Parliament later on Monday, Kövér underscored Hungary’s commitment to achieving international sustainability, environmental and climate protection goals.

Kover noted that the United Nations General Assembly elected Csaba Kőrösi, a Hungarian diplomat, as its president earlier this month. Korosi serves as co-chair of the organisation’s Open Working Group on Sustainable Development Goals.

“The fact that Hungary was the first European Union country to ratify the Paris Agreement illustrates the decisive action our country takes on the issue of climate protection,” Kövér said.

The speaker expressed Hungary’s support for the EU’s 2030 climate target plan, but said it was also important to know “who will ultimately pay for it”.

Kövér noted that Hungary’s climate law targets a 40 percent reduction in emissions by 2030 compared with 1990 levels and commits the country to achieving climate neutrality by 2050. He said Hungary’s emissions in 2020 were 34 percent lower than the 1990 level.

The reason why the Hungarian deputy parliament speaker visited Kyrgyzstan

Hungarian flag

Sándor Lezsák, deputy speaker of the Hungarian parliament, attended a session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organisation of Turkic States (OTS) in Cholpon-Ata, Kyrgyzstan, parliament’s press office told MTI on Sunday.

Hungary has an observer status in the organisation. Lezsak held bilateral talks with Kyrgyz House Speaker Talant Mamytov, parliamentary speakers of other member states and the Kyrgyz ministers of culture and education.

The deputy speaker visited the town of Karakol at the foot of the Tian Shan Mountains and inaugurated a memorial tablet dedicated to Hungarian traveller and orientalist Gyorgy Almasy, who led expeditions to the region in 1900 and 1906.

Afghanistan earthquake

Hungary will provide 4 million forints (EUR 10,000) worth of emergency aid to help victims of the earthquake that claimed over 1,000 lives in eastern Afghanistan, the foreign minister said on Saturday.

Two million forints will be provided through the government’s Hungary Helps humanitarian aid programme while the other 2 million by the Hungarian Ecumenical Charity, Péter Szijjártó said on Facebook.

“Help must be provided where the trouble occurred and it must be provided fast,” he said, noting that the earthquake measuring 5.9 in Paktika province killed over 1,000 people and destroyed most of the region’s home and infrastructure. The aid will be provided within the shortest possible period of time, he said.

Bangladeshi foreign minister AK Abdul Momen visits Hungary

bangladesh

Hungary and Bangladesh are intensifying nuclear energy cooperation, Péter Szijjártó, the minister of foreign affairs and trade, said after meeting his Bangladeshi counterpart in Budapest.

At a joint press conference with AK Abdul Momen, Szijjártó noted the new nuclear power plant being built in Bangladesh involves the same type of reactors as those being installed in Hungary’s expanded Paks nuclear plant by the same contractor, and given the importance of the investment, developing international nuclear industry cooperation was a top priority.

The minister announced the signing of a nuclear training agreement that provides

thirty Hungarian higher-education scholarships to Bangladeshi students per year, initially reserved for burgeoning nuclear professionals.

Also, the agreement relates to sharing knowledge and experiences related to nuclear power plant construction with a view to speeding up the Paks investment. The first Bangladeshi reactor will be operational in 2023, while the second will go online in 2024, he noted, adding that sharing of experiences with regard to construction and operations was highly important.

Szijjártó said the Paks construction must be completed by 2030.

“We’re striving to ensure the supply of energy in the long term, and the best and most efficient way to achieve that is by boosting our own nuclear capacity,” he said.

The government has opened a consular office in Dhaka, he noted, adding that trade cooperation was growing fast, with Hungarian-Bangladeshi trade volume increasing by 40 percent last year.

The Bangladeshi minister praised bilateral ties, adding that political stability in both Bangladesh and Hungary had helped to advance economic developments. He also thanked the Budapest government for donating coronavirus vaccines.

As we wrote earlier, the work of a group of Hungarian virologists could cease the spread of a deadly virus. The team is currently in Bangladesh to test a new method of controlling the dissemination of the Nipah virus, details HERE.

PM Johnson’s vote of confidence against him

Meanwhile, Szijjártó, welcoming the survival of Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s vote of confidence against him, said Hungary-UK ties stood in good stead. He stressed, however, that his comment was “purely personal” and that Hungary did not comment on the internal business of other countries.

“I know Boris Johnson well; we served as foreign ministers at the same time. I know that his approach to Hungary is respectful and I know how much, as foreign minister, he worked to develop Hungarian-British relations. And as prime minister, his commitment has remained unchanged … I look at this issue from the point of view of the future of Hungarian-British relations and based on something of a personal friendship,”

he said.

Hungary is home to almost 35,600 international students

Semmelweis University

Nearly 35,600 international students studied in Hungary by the last academic, higher education search platform Erudera reports.

Hungary hosts almost three times more students than it sends abroad. The latest statistics indicate that, recently, Hungary hosted precisely 35,579 foreign students, and it sent up to 13,038 students to pursue higher education abroad – Erudera said

From the figures mentioned above, more than 100 different nationalities decide to pursue their higher studies in Hungary.

This large number of foreign students coming to Hungary for higher education, mainly comes from these countries:

  • Germany – 3,430 students

  • China – 2,377 students

  • Romania – 2,216 students

  • Iran, Islamic Rep. – 2,216 students

  • Serbia – 2,169 students

  • Slovakia – 1,750 students

  • Ukraine – 1,202 students

  • Turkey – 1,138 students

  • Nigeria – 970 students

  • Norway – 906 students

These foreign students particularly choose these Hungarian Universities:

  1. University of Debrecen: number of international students – 6,297

  2. University of Pécs: number of international students – 4,156

  1. University of Szeged: number of international students – 4,020

  1. Eötvös Loránd University: number of international students -3,437

  2. Semmelweis University: number of international students – 3,274

“Hungary is becoming an increasingly favored study abroad destination, maintaining great credibility over the years, and has a solid tradition in the sciences, particularly medicine. Farther high-quality education, Hungary also offers a cheerful and welcoming culture, a fascinating history, and beautiful cities.”

Alma Miftari from Erudera said.

Hungary’s higher education has been ranked 44 out of 148 countries in the Global Report of 2014. Currently, there are 67 higher education institutions in Hungary, public and private. 37 out of 67 of these higher education institutions are located in Budapest offering 428 study programs.

The University of Szeged is presently Hungary’s highest-ranked university, placed 501-550 in QS World University Rankings and 27th in Emerging Europe and Central Asia.

Another reason that international students so frequent Hungary is that the cost of studying is not expensive compared to other European countries. Tuition fees usually stand on an average of  2,500 to 3,000 euros per year, and the

living costs can be low

especially if you budget your finances.

Government to create a crisis-proof economy?

The draft budget for next year submitted to the Fiscal Council sets a stricter deficit target of 3.5 percent of GDP and the public debt level of 73.8 percent, Mihály Varga, the finance minister, said on Friday. Hungary attends World Forestry Congress in Seoul

Forestry

Forests are in the focus of Hungary’s fight against climate change, Sándor Szentpéteri, Hungary’s deputy state secretary in charge of the country’s woods, told the 15th World Forestry Congress in Seoul on Wednesday.

A brief history of the World Forestry Congress

Since the first World Forestry Congress was held in Rome in 1926, about every six years, the Congress has been providing a forum for inclusive discussion on the key challenges and way forward for the forestry sector. In 1954, FAO was entrusted with supporting Congress preparations in close cooperation with the host country and proudly continues to do so today. More information on past Congresses can be found here.

The agriculture ministry quoted Szentpeteri as voicing agreement with the aim of the congress, to promote a green and sustainable future by way of cultivating forests.

Concerning Hungary’s achievements, the official said the country had doubled its wooded areas in the past decade, noting that a programme launched in recent years had given new impetus to those efforts.

By 2030, Hungary aims to increase the ratio of its woodlands to 27 percent of its total area, Szentpéteri said.

He also stressed the importance of cultivating existing woodlands lest they should “fall victim to the impacts of climate change”.

The Hungarian delegation to the conference is mostly interested in sustainable forestry and circular forest management, as well as in opportunities for cooperation concerning the application of Hungary’s experience in desert afforestation, the statement said.

The conference, held every six years, is attended by 12,000 participants.

Hungary and Uzbekistan will launch large-scale cooperation programmes in the fields of nuclear energy, water management, agriculture and border control, creating opportunities for Hungarian companies in that rapidly developing Central Asian nation, Péter Szijjártó, Hungary’s minister of foreign affairs and trade, said in Tashkent on Wednesday.

Uzbekistan has launched ambitious development projects in areas with cutting-edge Hungarian technologies in place, the foreign ministry quoted Szijjártó as saying at a press conference after the seventh session of the two countries’ inter-governmental committee for economic cooperation.

Hungary is set to contribute cooling technology for a new nuclear power plant in the framework of a 300-400 million euro project, as well as help train Uzbek nuclear experts, he said.

Hungary has agreed to grant scholarships to 170 Uzbek university and college students, up from one hundred thus far, the minister said.

Nuclear energy has a key role to play in Hungary’s secure energy supply, and determining the energy mix is a national competence, Szijjártó said, noting the European Union had consistently declared nuclear energy’s full exemption from sanctions on Russia.

Referring to the Afghan border, the minister said:

“Europe has a vital interest in preventing further waves of migration that could promote the spread of terrorism and extremist ideologies.”

On this score, he said

the European Union should double the amount earmarked for border defence efforts in Central Asia.

Concerning water management and agriculture, the minister noted that Turkic Council member states have agreed to establish an institute tasked with preventing drought.

Bilateral trade exceeded 110 million dollars last year and increased by 48 percent his year, Szijjártó said, adding that

Hungary’s Eximbank had opened a 105 million euro credit line to help finance bilateral business cooperation.

The two sides have signed a supplementary protocol on the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship programme and a declaration of intent on tourism cooperation.

Szijjártó was scheduled to meet his Uzbek counterpart, the deputy prime minister for investments and external economic relations, and the ministers of health, innovative development, higher and secondary education, tourism and cultural heritage later in the day.
