Coronavirus in Hungary

New overhead regulations: cheaper apartments will be the best sellers

According to the Hungarian government, the energy crisis is so serious that it even has to resort to changing the overhead cuts. The cuts that it used to consider sacrosanct. Because of these new regulations, demand will move towards low-rent and cheaply sustainable apartments.

University students soon start looking for rents

The admission thresholds for higher education institutions will be announced soon, kicking off the high season on the rental market. Although this is yet to come, the latest analysis from ingatlan.com shows that demand has already strengthened in several counties in July, writes Telex. Demand per thousand rentals increased by 24 percent in Budapest and by 20 percent in Győr-Moson-Sopron county.

According to Blikk.hu, the rising cost of renting and the new overhead regulations are making cheap rentals even more of a focus for young people. In Budapest, the average monthly rent threshold for the cheapest 10 percent of rents was HUF 130,000 (EUR 324.3). In Győr, the cheapest apartments are available for HUF 113,000 (EUR 281.9), in Szeged for HUF 94,000 (EUR 234.5) and in Debrecen for HUF 107,000 (EUR 266.9).

Changes in rent prices

As Telex writes, according to László Balogh, chief economist at ingatlan.com, rents in the capital had fallen until January last year. This was mainly due to the coronavirus pandemic: demand picked up and supply expanded significantly, the expert explained. But now, the tables have turned, and rental prices are rising as we approach the peak season.

He added, “an economic environment made more uncertain by the war and a new energy pricing rule for above-average energy consumption will shift demand towards low-rent and cheaply sustainable rents.”

Survey conducted on rent supply

The survey of ingatlan.com also went to see how much is the cheapest ten percent of the total market supply of apartments for rent in the capital and other county capitals. In Budapest, looking at the total market supply, the average rent was HUF 195,000 (EUR 486.4) in July, while the cheapest apartments for rent were those with a monthly rent of less than HUF 130,000 (EUR 324.3).

The average rent in Győr was HUF 150,000 (EUR 374.3) this month, while the best rent was HUF 113,000 (EUR 281.9). In Szeged, the cheapest rent was HUF 94,000 (EUR 234.5). In other university cities, such as Debrecen, the cheapest rents were HUF 107,000 (EUR 266.9), Veszprém HUF 130,000 (EUR 324.3), Miskolc HUF 75,000 (EUR 187.1) and Pécs HUF 90,000 (EUR 224.5).

Coronavirus cases increasing in Hungary

coronavirus

The number of patients with Covid infections has risen at an increasing rate over the past weeks in Hungary, with the Omicron BA.2 subvariant causing most cases, Hungary’s chief medical officer said on Thursday.

The more contagious BA.4, BA.5 and X subvariants, which are wide-spread in Europe, are also present, she warned.

Trace amounts of the coronavirus in waste water, an indicator of trends of the epidemic in the coming weeks, has increased in major cities while stagnating in rural areas, Cecília Müller told public TV channel M1.

Müller advised people exhibiting symptoms such as a sore throat or sneezing to contact their GPs and avoid community contact. “In the case of infections by the new variants, many patients complain about a headache,” she said.

Müller added that the new variants “somewhat bypass” vaccines, adding that vaccinated patients can contract the disease but typically overcome it more easily without needing hospital care.

The chief medical officer stressed the importance of inoculation, advising people aged older than 60 and the chronically ill to take a fourth jab.

Hungary’s COVID-19 numbers DOUBLED, mask-wearing to be reintroduced?

omicron variant

The number of new COVID-19 cases has already started to rise sharply in recent weeks. Unfortunately, the number of COVID-19 patients receiving medical attention in hospitals is now showing a significant increase as well. Continue reading below for more information on the subject.

4 663 new COVID-19 cases were recorded last week. In other words, the trend of more than 50 percent per week increase in the number of COVID-19 cases entering the official statistics (1 961 new infections two weeks ago and 3 042 one week ago) is continuing. This is according to a weekly report from the government’s coronavirus site. While the numbers in their records are accurate, something alarming is going on. The website fails to call the reader’s attention to the fact that there is a resurgence of the pandemic. The government still has yet to release how many COVID tests came out positive, says 444. This would certainly prove as useful data for further analysis.

More Hungarians in hospitals due to COVID-19

The pandemic might be more far-reaching than we have originally thought. Many people are not tested at all, or if they are, they have done tests at home and thus were not registered into the national system. This is shown by the doubling in the number of people hospitalised with COVID-19 in a single week. Over four hundred people now require hospital treatment, compared with 233 patients a week earlier. The rate at which cases increase is a whopping 109 percent.

The number of patients on breathing machines with coronavirus increased from 5 to 10 in only a week. The number of deaths, however, does not yet show any sign of increase. A week ago 21, this week only 14 reported cases of death surfaced.

Pandemic sweeps Europe yet again

COVID-19 is regaining its strength. This is not only true for Hungary but all across Europe as well. The big question is whether the health system will be under another serious strain. What is known is that the new infections are caused by variants of omicron BA.5 and BA.4. These variants of the virus are significantly better at adapting, being able to avoid immunity by reinfection of older virus variants, writes Qubit. But the new variants cannot significantly evade the durable protection against severe disease conferred by adaptive immune T cells in response to vaccination or infection.

Where there is serious testing, there seems to be a high number of new infections and an increase in the number of people in hospitals. This is not happening at the same rate as the infected. Here in Hungary, the increase in the proportion of people in hospitals and on breathing machines may be higher because the number of people who have contracted the virus may be significantly underestimated.

Bad news: number of coronavirus cases increase in Hungary

Coronavirus test

Fully 4,663 new Covid-19 cases were registered last week, while 14 people died in connection with the virus, koronavirus.gov.hu said on Wednesday in a round-up of last week’s data.

Altogether 6,411,997 have been vaccinated, with 6,199,038 having received a second shot, 3,884,792 a third, and 305,920 a fourth. There have been 1,932,788 Covid cases since the start of the outbreak and 46,661 have died. Currently there are 11,195 active infections and 488 Covid patients are hospitalised, 10 intubated on a ventilator. Fully 1,874,932 people have made a recovery.

These data show the first signs of a new wave of the coronavirus outbreak. The national average for wastewater data was already on the rise last week, and the number of active infections is rising rather than falling.

Unfortunately, it is not known how many tests are being carried out, because no data are being published, and there are 428 people under official house quarantine. Despite this, Cecília Müller, the National Medical Officer, has suspended the obligation to wear a mask in social institutions from 1 July, writes Telex.

Although the numbers remain low for now, it is worth monitoring the trends, as many countries in Europe are seeing an increase in the number of infections, and the current outbreak of omicron alvariants appears to be less seasonal, spreading rapidly during the summer.

Will the sixth wave of the coronavirus arrive this summer?

Virologist Gábor Kemenesi shared his views on monkeypox and the coronavirus. Wearing a mask is no longer mandatory in Hungary, except in health care institutions. Coronavirus concentrations in urban wastewater are also getting lower. But are we really over the coronavirus pandemic? Or is it going to be replaced by the monkeypox? Gábor Kemenesi, Junior Prima Prize-winning Hungarian biologist, virus researcher and adjunct professor at the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the University of Pécs, answered the questions.

The current coronavirus situation in Hungary

In Hungary, 6,410,946 people are vaccinated, out of which 6,197,968 received the second vaccination and 3,881,399 took the third jab. However, only 302,559 people received the fourth vaccination. According to Gábor Kemenesei, it is very important to increase the uptake of the third vaccination. The virologist said that

currently, the Omicron variant is the predominant strain.

In this period, proper herd immunity is of paramount importance, wmn.hu writes. According to Kemenesi, the fourth vaccination is recommended for people over 60 years of age, especially those over 80, as well as for members of vulnerable groups.

In Hungary, vaccination coverage is estimated to be 60-65 percent. According to Kemenesi, this is considered low and the citizens are in a vulnerable position. The virologist believes that

it is possible that we could see an upsurge this summer.

The question is whether the spike in cases will be followed by an increase in the number of intensive care unit admissions and a rise in the number of deaths.

Approaching monkeypox outbreak?

Rodents mainly carry this virus. Human illness is caused by contact with infected animals or animal products. It can also spread from human to human through close body contact. However, virologists have collected decades of data regarding monkeypox which gives them a huge advantage.

Prevention does not require mask-wearing since the virus does not spread through respiration droplets of infected people.

The virus can be easily detected by collecting a smear from the rash. The good news is that the vaccine against smallpox is also effective against monkeypox, hvg.hu reports. Kemenesi said that several virus families were being monitored, which could cause epidemics of varying degrees.

Investigation launched against Wizz Air because of fatigued pilots

wizz air pilots

Airline regulators have launched an investigation due to comments made by Wizz Air CEO József Váradi.

Controversial comments were leaked

The CEO of Hungarian low-cost airline Wizz Air has made some controversial comments a few days ago: he called on staff to work despite their fatigue, after trying to take time off earlier.

According to Index, unions have expressed outrage after József Váradi, CEO of Wizz Air, told workers that too many were taking time off for fatigue and that “sometimes it is necessary to go the extra mile”.

“The extra mile”

A security expert has warned that the current chaos, airport queues after the Coronavirus and last-minute cancellations are contributing to the exhaustion. József Váradi said the following in an in-company video message:

“We cannot run this business if every fifth person of a base reports sickness because the person is fatigued. We are all fatigued, but sometimes it is required to take the extra mile.”

EASA and investigation

As we can read in Forbes’ article, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) said on Friday that it was investigating Váradi’s comments, which were revealed in a leaked video, following concerns from pilots’ unions.

Wizz Air is under EASA’s continuous oversight, strictly complying with applicable legal requirements. EASA will now investigate the allegations and decide whether further supervisory action is necessary in the case.

Serious safety risk

“EASA recognises that fatigue can be a serious safety risk that needs to be recognised and properly mitigated. We are currently investigating the allegations to determine if and what further ad hoc surveillance measures are required.”

Wizz Air is one of the airlines that have been forced to cancel flights amid an industry-wide recruitment crisis, exacerbated by airport queues that have increased delays and disruption.

A safety expert said that currently, the problem for all operational staff in aviation is that while working and rest time is measured in hours, the actual level of fatigue depends on the type of work. The stress and uncertainty caused by the current chaos is helping to make staff tired sooner. Therein lies the challenge, according to the expert.

Orbán in Serbia: farm workers will be the heroes of 2022!

Viktor Orbán Serbia Alaksandar Vucic

Hungary and Serbia can count on each other, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said at the opening of the 89th International Agricultural Fair in Novi Sad (Ujvidek) on Saturday.

Sharing the stage with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic at the fair, where Hungary is the guest of honour, Orban noted that both Hungary and Serbia are strong in agriculture and said the countries are “an important food reserve for Europe”.

He said inflation, the threat of famine in various parts of the world and armed clashes in Ukraine have become the focus of attention, even though both political leaders would “deserve some carefree relaxation under normal circumstances” after recent election victories.

He warned that famine could spark a wave of migration that makes previous ones “pale in comparison” as people leave their homes for Europe not only in hope of a better life, but for survival.

He recalled that the two countries’ upgrade of the rail line linking Belgrade and Budapest had been criticised by many, but now the value of the investment has appreciated as delivery routes across Ukraine have become uncertain.

He added that while doctors and nurses were the heroes of 2020 and 2021,

farm workers would be the heroes of 2022.

Orbán said the war in Ukraine had put both countries in difficult positions: Serbia, because it isn’t a member of the European Union, and Hungary because it is.

He added that Hungary and Serbia would coordinate their positions and support each other in international forums no matter what debates may come, inside or outside the EU. Orbán said Hungary would not accept any decision by Brussels that is “economically unreasonable” and that would raise prices to the point that utilising the farm sector’s full capacity becomes impossible. He added that

Hungary’s farm sector, “if well managed”, can supply double the country’s population with food.

Massive increase in the price of tickets to Lake Balaton

balaton_sound_beach_fun

We can still swim in the Hungarian sea for free in several villages on the shores of Lake Balaton. However, the number of these places is decreasing rapidly as more and more towns are introducing tickets for those who want to bathe in the lake there.

Out of the 40 beaches at Lake Balaton, 20 are now only accessible for a fee. As 168.hu reported, eight Balaton beaches introduced an entrance fee last year, but there is still no information on these plans for this year. However, one thing is for sure, and it is that in many places, the entrance fees will be more expensive.

25% increase in entrance fees

In the last 2 years, due to the epidemiological emergency, local authorities and operators were not able to raise the entrance fees. Now, several places have indicated that they can no longer keep the same prices,

some of them will have to charge people 25% more during the season.

There are ~50 open beaches around Lake Balaton this year, with around 80% of them on the southern shore. The Democratic Coalition party (Demokratikus Koalíció) would like all municipalities to have free beaches due to the fact that many people can hardly afford a holiday at Balaton.

Free beaches in every town?

As we can read in the article of 168.hu, the president of the Balaton Association said that it is not feasible to have a free beach in every town on the shore of Lake Balaton. One of the reasons for this is that many villages and towns are struggling with a lack of space.

What is more, making paid beaches free of charge would be a financial burden for the municipalities.

Dániel Balassa, the mayor of Szigliget, said that the beach in Szigliget can accommodate 100,000 people a year, which generates a significant income for the municipality and is also an extremely important revenue for infrastructure and operation.

Balaton during the pandemic and price increase now

According to Pénzcentrum, in 2020, the first year of the epidemic, there were some municipalities that increased the price of adult tickets by 60% because the municipalities or municipal enterprises that ran the beaches based their prices on the fact that the restrictions related to the epidemic alone will reduce the expected traffic at all beaches. Meanwhile, the additional tasks will significantly increase the workload and associated costs.

Since the state of emergency was introduced, beaches have not been allowed to increase entrance fees. However, this year, we can expect higher ticket prices at many beaches. According to ATV, one beach is raising its prices by 25%, but there are also reports of a Balaton coastal municipality that would raise ticket prices by 50%.

Hungary sending 400,000 antigen test kits to these countries

COVID test protect against COVID-19

Hungary is sending 400,000 antigen test kits to the Philippines and to Somalia this weekend, the foreign minister said on Friday.

Péter Szijjártó said in a video posted on Facebook that coronavirus posed a greater challenge than ever before in many parts of the world.

Hungary, he noted, has been helping out in many cases,

most recently sending test kits to Moldova, North Macedonia and to Montenegro.

The Philippines will receive 300,000 rapid antigen tests while Somalia will get 100,000, he said.

“We trust that [the shipments] will aid in a successful fight against the pandemic in these two countries,” Szijjártó said.

Hungary is sending 455,000 rapid antigen coronavirus tests to Moldova, 72,000 to North Macedonia and 30,000 to Montenegro on Saturday to help their protection efforts against the coronavirus pandemic, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said on Friday.

Hungary has been helping to combat the coronavirus pandemic by sending vaccines and protective gear to other countries, which “has not disappeared although the war in Ukraine and the grave security challenges the region is facing have eclipsed it in the public discourse,” Szijjártó said.

Moldova, a strategic partner of Hungary and another neighbour of war-torn Ukraine, has seen hundreds of thousands of refugees arriving since the war started in February,

he said.

“Testing refugees requires strenuous effort, and Hungary wishes to ease the pressure on the local health-care system,” he said.

Coronavirus in Hungary: over 60 patients died over the weekend

semmelweis covid coronavirus

Altogether 65 patients died of a Covid-related illness over the weekend, while 2,183 new coronavirus infections were registered, koronavirus.gov.hu said on Monday.

So far 6,407,042 people have received a first jab, while 6,193,238 have been double-jabbed. Fully 3,865,508 Hungarians have received a booster third shot and 289,852 a fourth shot.

The number of active infections dropped further, to 48,873, while

hospitals are treating 1,310 Covid-19 patients, 40 of whom are intubated on a ventilator.

Since the first outbreak, 1,903,200 have been registered with the virus, while

46,266 deaths have been recorded.

Fully 1,808,061 people have made a recovery.

In view of improving numbers, the government website announced it will publish pandemic-related data once a week from May.

A lot of vaccine certificates become invalid today in Hungary because of this change!

vaccination immunity certificate_hungary

After 1 May, the documents of unvaccinated people who obtained their immunity certificate by contracting the COVID-19 infection will lose their validity.

Vaccination card

As Népszava’s online portal reported, as of Sunday, only those who have been vaccinated will continue to have a valid immunity card. The name of the document will also change and will be called a vaccination card. Vaccination cards will be valid for six months after the second vaccination and will become definitive when the third vaccine is given.

As Helló Magyar reported, once issued, the cards will not need to be exchanged, and their validity will be electronically recorded in the Electronic Health Service Space (Egészségügyi Elektronikus Szolgáltatási Tér, EESZT) where it can be retrieved by a QR code on the card.

How many shots for validity?

If you become infected after two vaccinations, your certificate will remain valid for six months from then. For those vaccinated with the single-dose Janssen vaccine, a booster vaccine must also be given within 6 months for the card to remain valid.

For those under 18, one vaccine for the single-dose vaccine and two vaccines for a double-dose vaccine will be sufficient to achieve unlimited validity.

However, with the abolition of virtually all protection measures from 7 March 2022, the obligation to present an immunity certificate has mostly been abolished. In other words, there are currently no additional privileges attached to the immunity card. But this could change in the case of another wave of the pandemic.

Validity of other, already expired official documents

As Telex reported, documents, including identity cards, driving licences, passports, and registration permits, which have expired during the emergency caused by the coronavirus outbreak, will be valid for two more months, until 30 June, the Minister of State for Regional Administration of the Prime Minister’s Office said on Facebook on Saturday.
