Coronavirus in Hungary

Minister expects very high inflation this year

Hungary market Lehel tér Budapest

The next four years are likely to see high growth coupled with a gradual tapering in public debt and budget deficit levels, according to Hungary’s Convergence Programme sent to the European Commission. The finance ministry expects economic growth of 4.3 percent this year, combined with a budget deficit of 4.9 percent of GDP and a public debt level of 76.1 percent.

Hungarian economic policy over the past year has focused on controlling the epidemic and relaunching the economy, the ministry said in a statement on Friday. Top priorities were protecting jobs, supporting families and businesses, and promoting investments, it said.

Accordingly, last year the economy expanded by 7.1 percent, much higher than the growth forecast in the 2021 Convergence Programme of 4.3 percent,

the statement said, adding that the figure equalled the seventh highest growth level in the European Union.

The new programme aims at boosting competitiveness, creating balanced and sustainable economic growth, and narrowing the gap with average European development levels. A strong labour market and healthy consumption, as well as the high investment rate and new capacities, will serve as the backbone of these goals, the ministry said.

Growth is targeted at 4.3 percent this year and 4.1 percent in 2023, while next four years it is expected to exceed 4 percent each year.

By 2026, the deficit is expected to decline to 1 percent of GDP, while the public debt will be on course to fall to 63.1 percent of GDP.

The forecasts are weighed by risks such as a possible resurgence of the coronavirus and a long-lasting war in Ukraine, it added.

Inflation is likely to average 8.9 percent this year before falling significantly in 2023,

the convergence report says. The government continues to aim to protect families from rising prices by capping utility costs and fuel prices, while keeping a lid on interest on household loans and food prices, the statement said.

Wizz Air announced new destinations for the summer: Ukraine is among them! – UPDATED

wizz air

The coronavirus pandemic has slowed down the trend of travelling abroad. Now that we seem to be coming out of it, it is the war that is a negative factor. This summer, however, Wizz Air will be launching more new flights from Hungary, and even the Ukrainian capital will be back on the list, among some new destinations.

Back to Ukraine?

As we have reported before, at the beginning of April, Wizz Air cancelled all its flights to and from Ukraine and Russia until the end of October, that is, the end of the summer timetable. Now, according to hvg.hu, Wizz Air is flying to Kyiv again this summer.

Flights to Kyiv are full for the first week of July, tickets are no longer available.

Apart from the flights to Kyiv, more destinations are added to the timetable for the summer. However, it will take some time for the airline industry to get back to 2019 levels, that is, the pre-pandemic levels. The executive vice president (henceforth: EVP) of Wizz Air told pénzcentrum.hu that he expects it to happen by 2024-25.

Expectations

Wizz Air EVP Jourik Hooghe said that “people’s need for mobility will restore the appetite for travel”, but the airline is more confident in the long-term recovery than the short-term. They believe the airline industry may be back to 2019 levels by 2024-25.

“In 2020, at the start of the pandemic, our turnover fell by more than 70 per cent. Initially, we put the airline into hibernation to minimise losses, while continuing to invest in our network and fleet to be stronger by the time the industry rebounds,”

Hooghe told pénzcentrum.hu.

“The last two years have proven once again that the ultra-low-cost model is the fastest way to respond in the aviation industry, and we were able to open new bases and launch new routes during the pandemic, while several airlines were in a state of near-bankruptcy,”

the EVP added.

New destinations

As Wizz Air reported back in January, the capital of Moldova, Chișinău, will soon be accessible from Hungary. What is more, from this summer, it will also be possible to fly from Debrecen to Corfu and Burgas, Bulgaria.

“One of Hungary’s most popular resorts, Hévíz, will soon be connected to Dortmund in Germany, while the winter schedule will see passengers flying from Budapest to Hurghada in Egypt and Aqaba in Jordan,”

Hooghe reported the good news.

UPDATE (04.24.)

Following our article, Wizz Air emailed us, emphasising that, based on their early-April announcement, they cancelled all flights to Russia until October 30. In the case of Ukraine, that cancellation was only until the end of June. However, even though there are bookable flights from July on their website, there are no real travel opportunities behind these. Therefore,

currently, nobody can travel to Kyiv.

They added that they keep monitoring the ongoing war in Ukraine. Once the authorities abolish the airspace closure, and travelling becomes safe again, Wizz Air is ready to launch flights to Ukraine.

Extraordinary announcement: Orbán to change the constitution again! – UPDATED

international_press_conference_viktor_orbán

In view of the war in Ukraine, the government will propose expanding the types of special legal order enshrined in the constitution, the prime minister’s chief of staff said on Thursday.

The state of special legal order introduced as a result of the coronavirus epidemic will end on May 31, Gergely Gulyás told a regular press conference. In view of the war in Ukraine, it is important that the government should be able to

take swift action when necessary

and it will propose expanding the status of special legal order to include humanitarian catastrophe and war in a neighbouring country, he said. This option will hopefully not need to be used but the possibility needs to be there, he said.

Hungary will continue making every effort to restore peace as soon as possible but its influence is limited, he said. It is a realistic scenario that the war could last for months or even years, and the movement of troops shows that the fights could intensify for periods of time, he added.

So far, some 625,000 refugees fleeing the war in Ukraine have crossed to Hungary,

Gulyás said. Over 80 percent have already travelled on, and the number of those currently staying here is estimated at maximum 100,000, he said. The government aims to provide work or education to as many as possible, and as a first safe country, it will provide refuge, accommodation and food to those forced to flee their homes, he said.

Coronavirus case numbers in Hungary suggest that while the coronavirus pandemic has not disappeared, its intensity has diminished,

the prime minister’s chief of staff said on Thursday.

In the past 24 hours, 24 people died in Hungary of a coronavirus-related illness, and 3,041 new infections were registered, Gergely Gulyás told a regular press briefing. Meanwhile, the number of people needing intensive care has fallen to 1,500, 48 of whom are on a ventilator, he said.

The number of new infections still varies rather widely, showing the presence of the virus in the populace, Gulyas said, adding that elderly people and patients with pre-existing conditions are the most vulnerable groups.

According to portfolio.hu, the minister highlighted that there would be no more restrictions in the coming months.

Hungarian GP: Ukrainian refugees bring AIDS, tuberculosis, measles

railway_refugees_ukraine

Dániel Eörsi, a Hungarian GP helping refugees from Ukraine, talked sincerely about the medical condition of the people crossing the Hungarian border. He said there were patients diagnosed with measles in one of the aid centres. Furthermore, the different medicines of Ukrainian citizens cause serious problems.

Refugees in poor medical condition

According to index.hu, Dániel Eörsi joined volunteer healthcare staff in an institution helping homeless people in Budapest. He said they met patients from every corner of the world, and it is common that their treatment differs from European standards. He added that it seemed to him sometimes that refugees coming from Ukraine received different treatment than the European scientific paradigm.

One of the refugees showed a blood pressure medicine, which was not in the Hungarian register. Moreover, Eörsi said many Ukrainian citizens use vitamins and herbs instead of medicine. Moreover, once he saw a leg ulcer that

had not been treated for 15-20 years.

Ukrainian refugees bring AIDS and other terrible diseases to Hungary?

He said that many refugees were not cooperative, and they did not go to the hospital despite the doctor’s recommendation. They accept antibiotics but reject treatment. For them, hospitals are dangerous places since they have to go there alone, without their families. He highlighted that some of them might carry hepatitis, AIDS or tuberculosis, mfor.hu reported.

The AIDS infection rate in Ukraine, for example, is significantly higher than in Hungary.

Moreover, we can catch tuberculosis regardless of the vaccine, although the chance of that is small. He said that among poorer people, doctors cannot exclude even scabies, lice, and similar health issues.

The vaccination rate of the children is low. Among the adults, 36 pc received at least the first jab of the coronavirus vaccine. That rate is above 70 pc in Hungary.
