V4 countries stands for stopping the war in Ukraine, says FM Szijjártó in London

szijjártó

The Visegrad Group stands for peace and stopping the war in Ukraine as soon as possible to ensure security in central Europe, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said in London on Tuesday.

Szijjártó spoke ahead of a summit between the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and the United Kingdom.

The region is bearing the brunt of the humanitarian burden of the war, he noted.

Poland, Slovakia and Hungary have already received “a great many” refugees, some of whom have travelled on to the Czech Republic, among other countries, he said.

Meanwhile, the coronavirus pandemic has yet to end, as “many countries are still battling that challenge and lack the requisite vaccines”, Szijjártó said. Hungary is donating another 100,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine to Thailand to help raise the vaccination rate. With that shipment, Hungary’s vaccine donations to Thailand will have reached 500,000, he said.

In total, Hungary has so far donated 4.2 million doses to 17 countries, he said.

“Raising the vaccination rate worldwide will curb the risk of new variants, so we can leave at least that challenge behind us. Security challenges are plenty without a health-care and economic crisis before us, too,” he said.

Everything you need to know about Hungary’s new travel restrictions!

Hungarian workforce - Passport Travel Luggage

From 7 March 2022, the pre-pandemic situation in tourism will be restored, travellers will be able to enter Hungary freely once again, without restrictions, and they will no longer need a test or vaccination certificate. According to experts, this could be a competitive advantage for Hungarian tourism in the next period.

The pre-pandemic system is being restored

A government decree abolishing protective measures against the coronavirus pandemic was published on Friday, revealing that the government would repeal the previous border control measures introduced from autumn 2020 onwards.

On Thursday, at the traditional press conference of the Hungarian Government, it was announced that the restrictions related to the epidemic, which were still in force, would be lifted by the end of the fifth wave of the epidemic, and the use of the immunity certificate would be abolished as well.

The abolition of entry restrictions in practice means that you will be free to enter Hungary again from Monday, March 7.

As before the pandemic, there will no longer be a need for vaccination or recovery certificates or PCR tests. Hungary’s land borders have been open without restrictions to those who came from neighbouring countries since June last year, but air travellers to Budapest or Debrecen and other possible smaller airports have had to prove their protection against the virus until now – this will be abolished from Monday.

Competitive advantage over rivals

Experts of the tourism industry say that the abolition of entry restrictions in Hungary could boost Budapest’s city trips, have a positive impact on festival and event tourism, and reduce the potential negative effects of the war in neighbouring Ukraine on Hungarian tourism.

It is an amazing pleasure for the travel profession that, after almost two years, it is possible to receive guests in Hungary again without restrictions, say the representatives of the profession in an article on turizmus.com. With this step, Hungary could find itself in a competitive position compared to those countries that continue to tie entries to a Covid-19 Vaccination Certificate.

You don’t need a mask anymore, the restrictions on events will also be lifted

As we wrote in our previous article, the obligation to wear a mask will also be lifted from Monday, and any restrictions that apply to events will be removed, too. Previously, larger mass events could only be attended with an immunity certificate, now, sporting events, cultural events, major music and dance events are open to everyone again.

However, the vaccination certificate system is not fully phased out, as they are still in use in most of the EU, says vg.hu.

Are Hungarians afraid? Passport applications jumped this week – details

travel passport documents

Even though the war is in Ukraine, Hungarians seem to be quite afraid – or at least cautious – because these past few days, the number of passport applications highly increased.

Applications

Four times more people applied to renew their travel documents in Hungary after the outbreak of the war than in the previous months, according to Interior Ministry data sent to the Népszava news portal.

Several government offices in the capital have also seen an increase in traffic in recent days, with many people now wanting to renew their passports or extend their validity, Napi.hu was the first to report.

Details

Data from the Interior Ministry shows, as Népszava reported, that in 2019, before the COVID-19 outbreak, there were on average 1,500 to 2,000 passport applications per day. Later, this dropped to 1,200-1,500 during the epidemic. After a government decree was issued at the end of the year, stating that expired documents could only be used until the end of June, the number of daily applications rose to 2,200-2,300.

By comparison, on Monday, 28 February, which was the fifth day of the Russian-Ukrainian war, many more, almost 9,800 applications were submitted.

By Tuesday, this number fell to 7,200. The Interior Ministry underscored the fact that these figures alone are not sufficient to draw far-reaching conclusions, and that a longer period should be examined, Népszava said.

According to the Interior Ministry’s Communications Department, no delay in processing passport applications is expected, as there is sufficient capacity for production. The question is, of course, how long the increased workload will last, as reported by Napi.hu.

Cost of renewal

As we can read in Népszava’s article, a passport costs HUF 7,500 (EUR~20) for five years and HUF 14,000 (EUR ~37) for ten years, but there is a surcharge if you need it urgently.

The document is usually ready within 8 days. Those who want it within 5 days pay HUF 19,000 (EUR ~50), those who want it within 3 days pay HUF 29,000 (EUR ~76) and those who want it within 24 hours pay a surcharge of HUF 39,000 (EUR ~102).

According to Napi.hu, there were some people who said they wanted the version that would be ready within 24 hours without hesitation. The receptionist told people arriving at the entrance that they should expect to wait at least 3-4 hours if they wanted to apply for a passport.

Finally, Hungarian baths can be visited without an immunity certificate!

The culture of Budapest’s Spas is world-famous, millions of people visit these spas every year. Before Covid, in 2019 there were a total of 5 million visitors in the various spas of Budapest, and since then however that number has fallen, there are still millions of visitors a year. Of course, these visitors include Hungarian tourists, families looking to relax, and elderly people seeking treatment.

But at the same time, you can find people from all over the world as well. However, since the beginning of the Covid virus, the Budapest Spas have been closed and reopened, again and again, fortunately, they have been constantly open since the spring of 2021, and no change is expected now. From the spring of 2021, when the European vaccination program was launched, it was only possible to visit the Budapest baths by presenting an immunity certificate.

Change is coming from now on

However, from March 1, 2022, the spas in Budapest can be visited even without a protection certificate, says travelo.hu with a reference to the spas’ website.

It is important to mention, that the Gellért Spa is still open to the public, even though the Hotel has been closed for some time due to a refurbishment.

The spas of the Budapest Spa open their doors to those who do not have a security certificate. The following spas are now open to the public:

  • Gellért Spa
  • Széchenyi Spa
  • Dandár Spa
  • Rudas Spa
  • Paskál Spa
  • Pesterzsébet Spa
  • Lukács Spa
  • Palatinus Spa
  • Árpád Csillaghegyi Spa

However, Aquaworld and Csepel Bath are not managed by this company, so a valid certificate of protection is still required for these baths. Among the larger baths in Budapest, the Dagály Bath is also not operated by the same company, but no protection certificate has been requested here yet.

Most of the Covid rules will be abolished

Incidentally, most of Covid’s regulations will be repealed from Monday 7 next week, virtually no restrictions or regulations will be in place from now on, virtually no mask will be worn anywhere outside of hospitals, and all events will be open without an immunity certificate, and no other Covid rule remains in effect.

Orbán: refugees have to work in Hungary!

Refugees from Ukraine

Hungary must look at the war in Ukraine in light of its own interests, as its topmost priority is the peace and security of its own citizens, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán told public broadcaster Kossuth Rádió on Friday.

Providing for the refugees fleeing the war in Ukraine is Hungary’s task, and “there’s no need to wait for anyone… waiting for Brussels would create serious problems at the border,” he said.

“Brussels is all talk, and nation states are all action,”

Orbán said. Insisting that it was uncertain when funding from the EU would be forthcoming, Orbán said “this is our issue, our problem… and Hungary will resolve it.” Hungary will welcome EU support “whenever Brussels deigns to wake up”. At the same time, Hungary “has been defending the southern border for years and Brussels has not paid a farthing for the [border] fence,” he said.

Some 70-80 percent of arrivals intend to move on from Hungary, Orbán said.

Those staying will need accommodation, food, healthcare, work and “education for the children in a few months”, he said. Refugees accepted in Hungary will have to abide by the rules applying to Hungarian citizens, Orbán said. They will be

entitled to jobseekers’ allowance for three months and required to find a job at the primary labour market or enter the government’s fostered work programme afterwards,

he said.

“Those staying will have to find their place in our way of life,” he said. Commenting on the fact that 140,000 people have entered Hungary from Ukraine through the border crossings there, Orbán said “this was the beginning of this crisis”. Should Transcarpathia become a militarised zone, the number of refugees will multiply, he said.

Third country citizens — such as Indian, Chinese and Nigerian students who arrived in the past few days — will be transported to Budapest and flown to their home countries,

he said.

Hungary’s Left “has sided with war”, Orbán insisted, and called on Hungarians to firmly reject that reasoning. “Sending troops means that we take part in a war, sending weapons means that whoever those weapons are used against will become our enemy for God knows how many years,” he said. Allowing transports of weapons across Hungary and “offering convoys crossing Transcarpathia as military targets where the war has not yet spread means that we are luring the war to that area”, the prime minister suggested.

Orban called for “strategic calm” in the current, tense situation,

and said “one must keep their hair on and not make chaotic statements”.

The prime minister

condemned an alleged remark from the Left suggesting that “Transcarpathia Hungarians are pro-Russian” and insisted that such a statement could mean “the most direct peril” to ethnic Hungarians in Ukraine.

Concerning the upcoming election, Orban said he had instructed the government that “the national interest and Hungarians’ security, rather than the campaign should be a basis for consideration”.

On the subject of the sanctions against Russia, Orbán said “those closest to the war will suffer most, primarily the Baltic states, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania”. The government is working to mitigate the direct impact of the sanctions, with regard to bankrupt Sberbank, rising energy prices and inflation, he said, but warned against ignoring medium-term risks such as lower than expected economic output in Europe. “The longer the war drags on, the bigger the problem, that is why supporting peace is the right position for Hungary,” he said.

Referring to the coronavirus pandemic, Orbán declared

the fifth wave over and called the situation “encouraging”.

He said it could not be excluded that this had been the final wave of the pandemic, but added that health experts were still monitoring trends.

United opposition wants to rescind special legal order in Hungary

Hungary opposition

The united opposition on Thursday issued a statement saying that a week ago it had proposed lifting Covid-related restrictions, and that the Orbán government had been forced to relent, as restrictive measures were partially lifted yesterday.

The statement added that the government was sticking to a number of “unnecessarily restrictive” measures. The united opposition called on the government to rescind its special legal order under which “unnecessary measures” such as the strike ban operated.

Its statement insisted that if it were up to the government, “then compulsory vaccinations would be introduced”, but instead they had buckled under political pressure. They also insisted that the opposition had notched up “similar successes” in changing the mind of the government over its “pro-Russian foreign policy”, adding that

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán had been forced to “lose his face every day”.

The opposition demanded that Orbán abandon his “see-saw policy” and unequivocally take the side of the West “where the Hungarian people want to belong”.

Breaking: Hungary to abolish almost all restrictions from next Monday!

coronavirus_mask_hungary_street_budapest
Hungary will scrap mask mandates from Monday, and phase out most coronavirus-related measures, the prime minister’s chief of staff told a regular press conference on Thursday.

The government will also lift the regulations enabling companies to make vaccines mandatory for employees, and scrap those regulating the use of immunity certificates, Gergely Gulyás said. Meanwhile,

the special legal order will remain in place to enable swift government action

should a sixth wave of the pandemic hit the country, he said.

Hungary’s security is of paramount importance in the current situation; “it is in the country’s explicit interest that it should not drift into the war” in Ukraine, the prime minister’s chief of staff added today. The Hungarian government has “firmly decided” not to send troops to Ukraine, nor will it allow weapons to be transported across the Hungary-Ukraine border, Gergely Gulyás said.

Referring to “experts’ opinion and available information”, Gulyás said

there was a fair chance that “those shipments could be destroyed”,

adding that the Hungarian decision was serving the security of Transcarpathia and its people. The security of the local ethnic Hungarian minority is most important, Gulyás said. Many have been forced to leave Ukraine, he said, but added that men between 18-60 were now forbidden to leave the country, therefore “many families have decided to stay”.

Gulyás  also noted the government’s position that refugees should be accommodated in the first secure country, which, for Ukrainian refugees, was Hungary.

Vaccination

The Hungarian government has set up a humanitarian council tasked with coordinating the aid operation of government agencies and charities to help refugees from Ukraine, the government’s spokeswoman said on Wednesday.

The body is headed by Gergely Gulyás, the prime minister’s chief of staff, and comprises representatives of public and higher education, the social sector and healthcare, child protection, regional administration, labour, transport, the policy for Hungarians beyond the borders and the Hungary Helps humanitarian aid programme, Alexandra Szentkirályi told a press conference in Budapest.

Miklós Soltész, the state secretary for church and state relations, said he had met the head of UNHCR’s Regional Representation on Tuesday who thanked him for Hungary’s contribution. Another meeting is planned for Sunday, he said.

Meanwhile, Hungary’s government is providing health and hospital care to refugees fleeing Ukraine who need it, the human resources ministry said on Wednesday. Hospital workers of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County, in north-eastern Hungary, have set up registration points at the border crossings, providing medical care to refugees and testing them for Covid, the ministry said in a statement.

If a refugee is not vaccinated against Covid, they are offered the jab,

the ministry said. Those with chronic illnesses are ensured access to their life-saving medicines. The health points are operating around the clock, the ministry said.

Hungary comes out from the coronavirus crisis as a winner, says minister

szijjártó

The past 12 years “have made it clear what a competitive edge a country will gain through quick decision-making supported by political stability”, Péter Szijjártó, the minister of foreign affairs and trade, told an event of the Hungarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Tuesday.

In a statement, the foreign ministry quoted Szijjártó as saying that Hungary had come out from the coronavirus crisis as a winner. “It has become clear that two things are needed to succeed economically: attract as much investment as possible and snatch up market opportunities,” the minister said.

Szijjártó said

the Hungarian economy had grown “by twice as much as the European average each year” since 2013, with government tax cuts playing crucial role, especially the introduction of the single bracket tax.

Citing Eurostat figures, the minister said that Hungary had made the largest cuts in wage taxes in the past ten years, which helped the country break investment records each year since 2014.

The government helped 1,380 businesses during the coronavirus crisis, with development projects totalling 900 billion forints (EUR 2.4bn),

Szijjártó said. The government contributed a total 375 billion forints to those projects, which were instrumental in saving some 290,000 jobs, he said.

Concerning the Ukraine war, Szijjártó said it would have a significant economic impact, “ruffling the status quo of the global economy for the second time in two years”.

All efforts must be made to create peace but efforts should also ensure that Hungary comes out stronger out of this crisis, too, he said.
