Last year’s contest in Dresden was won by two Hungarians, who were best at smooth navigation of the tram carriage, without spilling the glass of water placed on their dashboard.

This year Budapest hosted the 2nd European Tram Championship with competitors from 14 other cities. At the end of the competition revealed Patrick Tribondeau from Paris came out winner. The Hungarian team took the silver medal which is still amazing achievement.

Spain U21 1-0 Hungary U21: Morata goal was enough to edge the game

A 9th minute goal from Álvaro Morata was enough to seal the win, as La Rojita dominated most of the game, but not without a few warnings from the young Hungarians.

It didn’t take long for La Rojita to push their noses in front at Estadio Municipal de Cartagonova in Cartagena, as their Hungarian opponents seemed set on sitting in their own half and defending. A perfect cross from Sarabia from the right flank, a well timed run and headed finish from Morata, to open the scoring.

The pressure kept coming as the Spanish youngsters, frustrated with making any headway centrally against the compact Hungarian side, looked to exploit any space they could find on the flanks.

Despite having conceded the early goal, Hungary weren’t going to roll over and make things easy for Spain and even with the continual pressure and play in their half, they managed to hold out until past the half-hour point, until the clearest chances could come from the home side.

In the 38th minute, good build-up play and another great cross from the right from Sarabia found Óliver Torres deep inside the Hungarian area to head at goal, but he couldn’t quite steer the ball on target. Morata was looking for his second goal in the 40th minute, but Hungarian keeper Jova was alert to the danger, trapping the shot well.

Even with the dominance, yet again La Rojita were up against a team that were content to park the bus and on the balance of things, the single goal difference reflected how solid the Hungarians were managing to stand against the constant threats.

There was to be no letting up from Spain as the second-half commenced, with them continuing to show complete domination of possession. By the 50th minute, the only real effort that Hungary could offer, was a speculative long-range pop at goal from Windecker, but Jordi Amat had no difficulty dealing with that in defence.

The Hungarians were starting to grow a little in confidence though and after one good opportunity for Vécsei in the 59th minute, they continued to attack and Adorján was desperately unlucky when having beaten Ñíguez and then Spain keeper Pachecho, he hit the woodwork with his shot and then Carvajal reacted quickly to clear off the line.

Lopetegui decided it was time to shuffle his pack in the 63rd minute and on came Pardo for Sarabia. Within just two minutes though, Pardo picked up a yellow card. Hardly the introduction to the game that the Spain U21 coach had been hoping for.

Whilst Spain continued to dominate in the possession stakes, they couldn’t further their advantage, as Hungary sat every one of their outfield players behind the ball. The only brief flash of any attacking intent from the visitors came in the 74th minute, when Vécsei again had a chance at goal, but Pachecho saved without any real difficulty.

Bernat got forward well in the 77th minute to supply a good cross from the left, but this time Morata couldn’t make the most of the opportunity and was off-target with the finish. Deulofeu then came into the game in the game in the 79th minute for Óliver Torres, as Lopetegui looked to inject a little freshness of legs and ideas.

As the game drew to a close, despite one off-target and hopeful attempt by the Hungarians to draw level, Spain seemed comfortable enough, as Jesé came on for Morata with the game heading into injury time.

All-Hungarian final in Budapest as FTC and Érd Qualify

Budućnost Podgorica, FCM Midtjylland and MKS Lublin have to wait one more day for their last opponent in the Women’s EHF Champions League Group Matches, but they already know they all will visit Hungary in near future as two teams from this country will meet in the final of the Qualification Group 2 in Budapest. Érd cruised to the final after an impressive 34:25 win over Swiss team LK Zug Handball while FTC Rail Cargo Hungária had to come from behind in the semi-final match against Lokomotiva Zagreb to win 26:23.

Women’s EHF Champions League Qualification, Group 2 (Budapest) – Semi-final

Érdi NK vs LK Zug Handball 34:25 (18:14)

Érd won this clash with a self confident performance leading from the beginning to the end of the match. There was no doubt that Hungarian team will be victoriuous in their debut in the European top flight, while Swiss champion Zug will have to settle to the Cup Winners’ Cup and Swiss handball will have to wait longer for their first team in the premier European competition.
“I hope it wasn’t our real face. I wanted to give possibility to play to all of our players but I couldn’t. My players were too excited, sometimes they looked like they have never been on the court before. We have to cool down and show we have a place next to the best teams,” Érd coach Edina Szabó said for DigiSport.
Anna Kovács was the top scorer of Érd with eight goals. “We have been expecting a team like this. Sometimes we could raise the difference, but Zug always could come closed. We should fix our mistakes and we just can be better like today. Tomorrow it will be an equal match in the final,” she said.

FTC-Rail Cargo Hungária vs RK Lokomotiva Zagreb 26:23 (7:9)

It was a more exciting match than most expected. Lokomotiva, who were second in the Croatian League after Podravka, had an extremely powerful start. Their defence was excellent and was the main reason why they led by two goals after 30 minutes.
Ferencváros, who had beaten defending champions of the European top flight from Győr in the first round in the Hungarian league, struggled in the attack. But in the second half Croatians looked to get tired and Zácsik showed great form at the Hungarian side.
“We were sleepy in the first half of the match. We couldn’t get the rhythm and missed many chances. I really praise Lokomotiva, they were a much stronger opponent that we expected. They are a really great team. We have used much more of our enegry than ÉRD, so I’m expecting a very difficult final on Sunday,” FTC head coach Gábor Elek said.
Szandra Zácsik, who was the most effective player with nine goals added: “I don’t want to remember to the first half. We thought we can win this match with half of our energy. But our coach said in the break our jersey will not win the clash on its own. So we have arrived with competely different mentality to the second half. If we can show a perfect defence on Sunday just like against Győr, we can win against Érd.”
