Ferencváros (FTC, Fradi) suffered a 2-1 loss to Belgian side RSC Anderlecht in Brussels on September 25, 2024, and is therefore starting the UEFA Europa League season with difficulties.

Match Overview

Ferencváros gave a great effort against a strong Anderlecht club at the Constant Vanden Stock Stadium. From the start, both sides showed great enthusiasm and will despite the wet surroundings. The first half was a closely fought game in which both teams created chances but failed to convert them into goals.

Key Moments

Anderlecht’s Yari Verschaeren found the back of the goal with a well-placed shot in the 60th minute, thereby sparking the breakthrough. The aim was achieved with a quick counter-attack that surprised the Ferencváros defence. After a dubious handball call, Kasper Dolberg extended the advantage for the home side only six minutes later, scoring a penalty. The penalty ruling was highly contested as the call by the referee offended Ferencváros players and supporters.

Through a brilliant free-kick by Kristoffer Zachariassen, Ferencváros pulled one back in the 75th minute. The exact strike of the Norwegian midfielder turned over the wall and into the top corner, inspiring the visiting supporters. Ferencváros couldn’t break down Anderlecht’s determined defence in the latter minutes of the game despite their best attempts to get an equaliser.

Reactions from the Team

Stanislav Cherchesov, head coach of Ferencváros, praised the team’s effort but voiced dismay at the outcome. “We tried with heart and will, but sadly we missed our opportunities. We must grow from this and return for the next game stronger,” Cherchesov said in the post-match news conference. He also underlined the necessity of improved defensive organisation to prevent counter-attack goal surrendering.

Kristoffer Zachariassen, the consolation goal scorer, stayed upbeat. “We show that we could compete at this level, even if losing is always difficult. We should keep concentrated and work on our errors,” he said. Zachariassen’s performance was one of the highlights for Ferencváros because his runs and set-piece deliveries often challenged the Anderlecht defence.

Fans’ Perspective

Renowned for their fervent support, Ferencváros supporters were loud throughout the game, in Brussels and at home. Notwithstanding the loss, they expressed pride in their squad’s performance and hope for the next games. Encouragement comments abound on social media, and many of the team’s supporters stressed its battling nature. As supporters offered their opinions and responses to the game, the hashtag #FradiForever trended on Twitter or on other platforms, like gamblii casino.

One admirer posted, “Proud of the lads for battling right till the last. We will recover with more strength. #FradiForever”. Another admirer said, “Unlucky outcome, but team effort is fantastic.” Turning now to the next one! #Europa League.

Looking Ahead

Ferencváros will have to reorganise fast to be ready for their next Europa League game. The club is resolved to recover and create a good impression in their last group-stage games. Combining seasoned players with fresh ideas, Ferencváros hopes to get beyond the group level and have a major influence on the event.

For Ferencváros, the next game will be vital because they visit Danish side FC Copenhagen at the Groupama Arena in Budapest. Key elements as they try to guarantee their first points in the group stage will be the home advantage and the encouragement of their ardent supporters. Coach Cherchesov underlined the need to keep concentration and raise their defensive solidity in the next games.

Conclusion

Although Ferencváros’s loss in Brussels is a setback, it also provides a teaching moment. As the club negotiates the demands of the Europa League, its tenacity and drive will be absolutely vital. Fans will be excited by more exciting games and, ideally, a great season ahead.

There is still much football to be played; Ferencváros’s path in the Europa League is just starting. As the squad works towards its objectives, its capacity to recover from hardship and relentless fan support will be crucial. With the ultimate goal of having a strong run in the competition, Ferencváros will seek to maximise its strengths and solve its shortcomings as the season advances.

Europa League: Anderlecht won in five minutes against Ferencváros

ferencváros anderlecht

Ferencváros debuted in the eight-match Europa League regular season on Wednesday evening. The Hungarian champions started against Belgian side Anderlecht in Brussels in the pouring rain.

Fradi‘s starting line-up was no surprise. Four Hungarians were in the lineup: Dénes Dibusz in goal, Endre Botka and Gábor Szalai in defence, and Barnabás Varga in the forward line.

First half

The first shot was taken by Fradi but was blocked and the corner was not threatened in the fifth minute. Anderlecht responded with two shots on goal; the first one was easy for Dibusz, and the second one he had to bravely; he was left-footed into the bottom left corner.

In the 20th minute, Kady shot after a feint but was blocked by the Belgian defenders. Three minutes later, Anderlecht took a free kick from a dangerous position. The ball curled in well, and Dolberg headed over from four metres. In the 25th minute, Edonzie aimed for the bottom left corner from 18 yards. Dibusz cleared, and the onrushing Sardella returned the rebound from 14 yards, but he shot a metre over.

In the 35th minute, after a second Fradi corner, there was a slight scramble. The ball found Barnabas Varga, who shot it, but it hit the head of Cissé, who could not dive to clear the ball on its way to the goal.

In the 38th minute, Dibusz had to be on the spot again when Amuzu received a good start on the right flank and fired a sharp shot into the middle. The Hungarian goalkeeper had to clear it away from the onrushing strikers. Rommens had another shot from a good position, but the Belgian goalkeeper was on the spot again.

Second half

After the turnaround, the first quarter of an hour was relatively uneventful; Barnabás Varga had a chance but missed it because he had no power left to shoot after breaking inside the penalty area.

Anderlecht then took the lead in the 60th minute, somewhat unexpectedly.

Edonzie received an initiative on the left, took the ball inside the penalty area, and passed it to Stroykens, who finished for Verschaeren. The Belgian number ten placed the ball with his left foot, not with great power but very accurately to the bottom right from 18 yards. Dibusz spotted it too late, dived for it, and got in on it, but the goalpost helped the ball into the net.

Five minutes had not passed when Dibusz brilliantly flicked a Dolberg header into the bottom right. Edonzie collected the rebound, pushed it past Botka, and the defender, who had been hesitant in the game, kicked the striker. The referee blew the whistle for the penalty, and Dane Dolberg shot the ball from two steps very confidently and powerfully, and it went into the net for the first goal.

After the 70th minute, Fradi coach Pascal Jansen made three changes to his team, including the record-signing Brazilian Saldanha. Saldanha scored in the cup games against Budafok and MTK, but that was another level.

Ferencváros played the last ten minutes with a man advantage, with substitute Angulo picking up two yellow cards in a few minutes. In the 87th minute, Traoré sent back a short ball from ten meters out, headed into the net by Simic, who was trying to save. After the equalizer, there was no chance of an equalizer, and the four minutes of extra time passed without the Green and Whites even getting into the Belgian penalty area.

Fradi will have a chance to improve next week, although they need a brace against Tottenham to get the points. How Ferencváros will finish after the first round will be decided after Thursday’s game.

Which players are going to retire in 2024? The reasons given

puskás aréna stadium stadion budapest hungary

Sponsored content

Every year, many top players retire from football. Some end their careers early, such as Ronaldinho or Bale, while others continue to play even into their 40s.

There has long been talk about the departure of Messi, Ronaldo, Benzema or Modric. However, these old-timers continue to show high-class football and are not going to hang up their boots on a nail just yet. Betting on football with these players will be available at himmel-kasino.com for at least another year.

Who may retire from football in 2024

The following players are among the most likely candidates for retirement:

  • David Luiz;
  • Leonardo Bonucci;
  • Mats Hummels;
  • Thomas Muller.

More information about the retirement of some players will be available after the end of the 2024 European Championship.

David Luiz

European football fans have already managed to forget a little about such a Brazilian defender as David Luiz. Since 2021, the player has moved to his native Brazil, where he has been playing for Flamengo for the fourth season in a row. In Europe, Luiz managed to be remembered as a player of Chelsea, PSG, Benfica and Arsenal. And in 2015, the footballer became the most expensive defender, as his transfer cost PSG 50 million pounds, which was a record at the time. On April 22, 2024, the player will turn 37 years old. And, most likely, the current season will be the last in his professional career. But the player will play at least until the end of the year, as the season in Brazil will last until December 8.

Leonardo Bonucci

Italian football legend Leonardo Bonucci announced last year that he would retire after Euro 2024. He is an iconic player not only for club football but also for the national team.

The player is the last of the classic defenders of Italian football and is on a par with such legends as Cannavaro, Nesta and Maldini. The footballer spent most of his career at Juventus. And when the player was in the starting lineup, each bookmaker gave low chances for the opponents to show a productive game.

In the last year, the footballer has been injured frequently and went to finish his career first to Union Berlin, where he played in seven matches, and then to Fenerbahce, where he took the field in only one game in half a season. Therefore, there is little doubt that the current season will be the last in the Italian’s career.

Mats Hummels

The Borussia Dortmund defender hasn’t been playing much in the last season and has started to lose his place in the first team. The footballer has repeatedly said that he wants to take advantage of the moment when he needs to end his career. Hummels’ current contract with Borussia runs until the end of this season. Therefore, it is highly likely that the player will decide to retire from football after the end of his current agreement with the team.

Thomas Mueller

The saga of another German footballer Thomas Muller’s retirement has been going on for two years. Since 2022, the striker has announced his desire to end his career several times and changed his mind several times. Muller is 34 years old. By football standards, the striker can still play 1-2 seasons at a good level. But in the 2023/24 season, the player does not take the field so often and is mostly considered a rotation player. Therefore, everything will depend on Thomas’ performance at the home European Championship. In case of failure at least in the national team, the player will end his career.

UEFA Nations League Hungary, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Hungary’s match against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the second round of the UEFA Nations League group stage ended with a 0-0 draw. There were many attempts, but none of them secured the awaited Hungarian goal.

Draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina

24.hu writes, that the Hungarian national football team played out a 0-0 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the second round of the UEFA Nations League group stage. Bosnian goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj made several key saves, including a crucial stop from Ádám Martin’s header in the 89th minute. Hungary’s next fixture will be at home against the Netherlands in October. This match followed Hungary’s heaviest defeat under coach Marco Rossi, a 5-0 loss to Germany. Rossi labelled the result a disgrace and highlighted the psychological importance of the Bosnia match.

What happened at the UEFA Nations League match?

People who followed the game in Budapest said that the atmosphere at the stadium was subdued with empty seats, and the match itself was equally underwhelming. Hungary created some chances, including a dangerous header and close-range effort from Varga, while Zsolt Nagy aimed for the bottom corner following a save from Bosnian goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj. The second half saw Hungary continuing to rely on set-pieces, with their best opportunity coming from a Szoboszlai free kick, which narrowly went over the bar after a touch.

There were also concerning moments, as Orbán and Botka collided during a header, leaving the latter with a bleeding head, although he was able to leave the pitch on his own.

Hungary pushed for a goal until the last minute, with substitute Ádám Martin coming close with a header in the 89th minute, but Vasilj made a crucial save. FC Barcelona has entered into a multi-year partnership with BioTechUSA, a Hungarian-owned family business specialising in sports supplements. Under this agreement, the company will supply its range of nutritional products—including proteins, vitamins, and recovery supplements—to Barcelona players like Lamine Yamal, Pedri, Dani Olmo, and other top athletes at the club. This collaboration extends beyond product supply, focusing also on research, education, and knowledge transfer, suggesting deeper potential for the partnership.

A historic partnership: Barcelona and BioTechUSA

The deal was formalised before Barcelona’s La Liga match against Real Valladolid, with Juli Guiu, FC Barcelona’s Vice President of Marketing, and BioTechUSA co-owners Bálint and Balázs Lévai present, Index reports. According to Guiu, quality nutrition and well-planned supplementation play a crucial role in player performance, and Barcelona views this partnership with BioTechUSA as a guarantee of top-level support in this area.

Bálint Lévai emphasised that Barcelona carefully selects its global partners, adding that BioTechUSA’s premium-quality products and expertise exceeded the club’s expectations. The two parties share common values and philosophies, making the collaboration a natural fit from the outset.

The announcement coincided with Barcelona’s dominant 7-0 victory against Valladolid at the Olympic Stadium, as the Camp Nou undergoes renovation. Despite the ongoing construction, the partnership launch took place against the backdrop of Barcelona’s rich sporting history and future promise, symbolised by young stars like Lamine Yamal, who represent the next generation of the club’s excellence.

History of BioTechUSA

BioTechUSA, founded in Hungary over 30 years ago, has grown into one of Europe’s largest producers and distributors of dietary supplements, with a presence in 103 countries, 49 webshops, 322 franchise stores, and over 4,500 B2B partners. Even amid economic challenges, the company achieved a nearly 15% increase in revenue in 2023, reaching HUF 90.49 billion (about EUR 230 million). Their EBITDA also rose by 3.5% to EUR 10.47 billion (about EUR 26.6 million), and the company invested nearly HUF 5 billion (EUR 12.7 million) in new products and development.

The partnership with Barcelona includes collaborative research, with plans to publish an annual study on the effects of BioTechUSA’s supplements on sports performance. These reports will feature input from Barcelona’s experts and medical staff. Additionally, Barcelona’s methodology and training insights will be shared with Hungarian elite sports professionals through a series of lectures, accompanied by BioTechUSA’s specialists in sports supplementation.

FC Barcelona affirmed the importance of supplements in their athletes’ diets, stating that their medical team is currently working to select the BioTechUSA products that best meet the nutritional needs of their players. Each player will receive personalised dietary plans, particularly tailored around match days to ensure optimal performance and recovery.

In essence, this partnership is not just about supplying products but involves ongoing collaboration in the field of sports science, benefiting both FC Barcelona and BioTechUSA as they work together to push the boundaries of athletic performance.

UEL main round: Ferencváros vs Tottenham at home – full program details

ferencváros

English, German, Dutch, Greek, French, German, French, Ukrainian, Swedish and Belgian opponents in the UEL for Ferencváros. Tottenham and AZ Alkmaar visit Budapest.

One-leg main draw instead of group stage

As we wrote earlier, the Ferencváros (FTC) team knocked out Bosnian side Borac Banja Luka to qualify for the UEFA Europa League. They were drawn in Monaco on 30 August from the second tier based on the UEFA rankings of the participants.

Under the new arrangements, each team that qualifies for the main competition will face eight opponents in the so-called league stage (two from each of the four groups), four of whom will play at home and four away, fradi.hu said.

The draw sees the home side host English side Tottenham, Dutch side AZ Alkmaar, French side Nice and Swedish side Malmö, while away games are played against German side Frankfurt, Greek side PAOK, Ukrainian side Dinamo Kiev and Belgian side Anderlecht.

In the league stage, the teams finishing in the top eight of the 36-team single-group main draw will go straight through to the last eight. Teams finishing between 9th and 24th will face a play-off round for a place in the last 16. For the teams finishing between 25th and 36th, international cup competition will end, as from this season there will be no crossover between the various international cups, with the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and UEFA Conference League all becoming closed from the main competition onwards, with only the qualifying rounds in one series allowing teams to continue in another.

In the knockout stage, the usual back-and-forth matches will be played, with the final still being decided in a single game.

Under the new system, which will come into force from the 2024/25 season, every match, every point, every goal scored, and every position will have a major impact.

Fans will be treated to a series of closely matched, decisive matches from the very first day of play.

Ferencváros advance to Europa League group stage, Paks and Puskás Akadémia exit European competition

banja luka ferencváros

Hungarian league champions Ferencváros will fly the flag for Hungary in Europe this season after defeating Borac of Bosnia in the play-off round, but Paks and Puskás Akadémia will put away their passports for another year after both were knocked out of the European Conference League.

Ferencváros needed a penalty shootout to overcome Borac Banja Luka after Barnabás Varga’s penalty had cancelled out Grahovac’s extra-time opener following a goalless 90 minutes in the Groupama Aréna in Budapest, MLSZ said.

Indeed, the first leg in Bosnia had been a goalless draw too, but the 30 minutes of extra time in the second leg at least produced two goals, Grahovac’s against the run of play in the 104th minute and Varga’s spotkick seven minutes later after Manolovic had fouled Ferencváros’s Kady in the penalty area.

The ensuing shootout was typically dramatic, with Fradi prevailing 3-2 to secure a sixth consecutive season of group-stage football in European competition and the fourth in a row in the Europa League.

Puskás Akadémia vs Fiorentina

In Thursday night’s other fixtures invoving Hungarian teams, Puskás Akadémia held Italian giants Fiorentina to another impressive draw, Zsolt Nagy’s 97th-minute penalty kick cancelling out Moses Kean’s earlier strike to earn a 1-1 draw at home in the Puskás Aréna after a 3-3 result in Italy last week, only for the Felcsút club to lose the resulting penalty shootout 5-4.

Paks vs Mlada Boleslav

Meanwhile, Paks suffered a more comprehensive defeat at the hands of Czechia’s Mlada Boleslav, the good work of a 2-2 first-leg away draw last week going to waste as a 3-0 loss at home meant last season’s Hungarian Cup winners were knocked out 5-2 on aggregate.

Commonly asked questions about junior goalie gloves

goalkeeper football gloves

Sponsored content

Got a future goalkeeping star in the family? A shop-stopping legend-in-training? If so, you’ll naturally want to support their development. The best way to start is by giving them top-notch junior goalie gloves to take onto the pitch.

However, many young keepers (and their parents) make mistakes when buying their first pairs of gloves. A lot of them have questions, too, about how to pick the perfect gloves and how to look after them and help them last a long time.

This guide’s here to help, providing answers to many of the common questions that might be floating through your mind.

Are All Junior Goalie Gloves More or Less the Same?

Not at all. Junior goalie gloves (and adult gloves, too) vary massively from one pair to the next. They vary in lots of different ways, too, from their materials and construction to their aesthetics, safety features, comfort levels, and price tag.

One pair of gloves, for example, may have a much thicker backhand than the next, which helps the wearer punch the ball further. Some gloves have different types of “cut,” which refers to the way the palm and finger sections are stitched and impacts how much comfort and control the wearer has.

This is why you shouldn’t make the mistake of rushing in and buying the first junior goalie gloves you see or buying a pair just based on looks or brand name alone. You have to find the right fit for you or your young keeper.

Why Is It So Important to Pick the Right Gloves?

Because they have a big impact on your game. It’s as simple as that. You can ask any experienced adult keeper, and they’ll all agree that gloves really do matter. The right pair help you feel comfy and confident on the pitch, which, in turn, helps you make more saves and fumble the ball far less.

Meanwhile, ill-fitting or uncomfortable gloves provide a completely different experience. They hinder keepers and impair their abilities, preventing them from reaching their peak and putting in those 10/10 performances.

Not only that, but the wrong gloves may also raise your risk of injury. If your gloves don’t fit right or are poorly made, for example, you could put your hands, fingers, and wrists at risk of breaks, fractures, and more. It’s not worth the risk, especially for young players who are still learning the game.

How Much Should I Spend on My Junior Goalkeeper Gloves?

There’s no single answer to that question, as it all depends on what type of gloves you want and how much you’re willing to spend. But one thing is clear: you don’t have to spend a fortune to get a good set of junior goalie gloves.

So, don’t make the mistake of assuming that a bigger price tag necessarily means a better pair of gloves. At the same time, you don’t necessarily want to buy the cheapest possible option, as they may be lacking in key areas, like comfort or safety.

Try to find the right compromise between value and quality, seeking out gloves that are reasonably priced and meet all your needs in design and protection.

How Do I Know Which Size to Buy?

There are a few ways to ensure you get the right size. First, check sizing charts for the brand you’re buying from. Charts may vary slightly from one manufacturer to the next, so it’s always important to verify before you buy. You should also measure your junior goalie’s hands before buying gloves to determine the right size.

What Should I Look for When Choosing Gloves?

There are lots of factors to consider. For junior goalie gloves, it’s particularly important to focus on safety. Look for gloves that have strong safety ratings and helpful protective features – like fingerspines – to guard against injury.

Focus also on general comfort levels to ensure your young keeper feels at ease, as well as other elements of the glove design, like backhand strength, palm grip, and closure system.

Use This Info to Buy the Best Junior Goalie Gloves

Picking the right junior goalie gloves can be quite an ordeal. But, armed with this info, you should be in a much better place to make the right choice. Remember to take your time, compare options, and consider multiple factors to find the ideal gloves to elevate your young keeper’s game.

Orban and Gulácsi hoping to re-establish RB Leipzig as German football’s best of the rest

gulácsi leipzig

There was a time when RB Leipzig were not only considered to be the best German Bundesliga team after Bayern Munich, but they were also tipped to surpass the perennial champions.

Sadly for them, that ascendance never came to pass: in the meantime, Borussia Dortmund have steadied their ship and Bayer Leverkusen have become Bundesliga champions.

So RB Leipzig have fallen down the pecking order somewhat in German football, but they have a clear philosophy and a talented squad – with Hungarian internationals Willi Orban and Péter Gulácsi at the heart of it.

Red Bull Need Wings

You might think that Leverkusen’s title win during the 2023/24 season would have altered the landscape of the German Bundesliga, but according to the sports betting odds that’s not the case – they’re only +225 second favourites behind Bayern Munich (-450), with Leipzig back at +1100.

The sports betting tips columns will focus on the battle between upstarts Leverkusen and the wounded animal that is Bayern Munich; they won the Bundesliga title for eleven seasons in a row prior to 2023/24, so you suspect they won’t have taken their humbling too kindly.

Leipzig and Dortmund will be desperate not to become a mere afterthought in discussions of the destination of the Bundesliga title this term, and a case can be made for both.

Dortmund, of course, reached the final of the Champions League last season – they could be more of a danger on the domestic front this time around, assuming they don’t have a similar distraction in 2024/25.

As for Leipzig, Marco Rose has once again overseen a quiet evolution during the off-season, bringing in a host of promising talents. The loss of star man Dani Olmo to Barcelona hurts, but that’s the Leipzig way: buy low, sell high… $55 million in the Spaniard’s case.

Besides, they still have plenty of top players waiting in the wings…

Seeing Red

A captain has a responsibility on their shoulders to lead by example.

And Willi Orban has shown tremendous leadership qualities throughout his time at Leipzig, helping to get the best out of the teammates around him.

That selfless streak was in evidence once again on the opening day of the Bundesliga campaign, when he effectively sacrificed himself for the good of the team.

A Bochum attacker was threatening to break clear into a dangerous position, so Orban came across and brought him down with a professional foul.

Slow motion replays hinted that the Hungarian had got a little touch on the ball, which would have saved him, however the match officials didn’t agree and so instead Orban was shown the red card.

Leipzig hung on to win the game 1-0, with Rose praising Orban for ‘sacrificing himself’ for the good of the team.

The 31-year-old will now miss Leipzig’s next two Bundesliga fixtures, but he will be back soon enough and ready to resume his position as the side’s defensive catalyst.

Behind him, Gulacsi is celebrating his tenth anniversary as a Leipzig player, with the goalkeeper kicking off his milestone season with a clean sheet against Bochum.

Fans of the Red Bull powered club know that with their Hungarian duo marshalling the defence, they remain very much in safe hands.

The leading Hungarians in Premier League history; The top scorer and top clean sheet holder

zoltan gera Hungary mlsz

The Premier League has received an influx of some of Hungary’s biggest talents in recent times as the nation has threatened to make a significant mark on the English top flight, as it has done so in the past.

Only 12 Hungarians have ever made an appearance in England’s first division, but some of them have made huge impacts both domestically and at the continental level.

Here, we will look at the leading players from the Eastern European nation who have lined up for Premier League clubs since the competition’s inauguration in 1992. After all, in the coming years, their legacies could perhaps be bettered by the latest Hungarian imports.

Zoltán Gera

Zoltán Gera managed 17 goals in his time with West Bromwich Albion and Fulham, which makes him the most prolific Hungarian in the league’s history.

Gera was a huge factor behind much greater times with his former clubs than what they are experiencing now. West Brom is now a Championship team with an outside chance of promotion this season offered at 7/2 in football bets

Fulham is still a top-flight team, but the Premier League odds suggest they could be pulled into a relegation battle this campaign, offered at 5/1 to face the drop.

The club’s Gera had past allegiances with are far from disaster at this stage, although he certainly inspired superior eras when he was a key part of their setups.

Gera was most famously part of the Fulham team that reached the UEFA Europa League final in 2009/10. He managed six goals and four assists in Europe to help the London club to one of their greatest-ever seasons.

He helped Fulham to eighth and ninth-placed finishes in the seasons after their remarkable European campaign. He was part of a strong squad that regularly sealed comfortable top-half finishes – a theme the club would love to replicate in the coming seasons.

At West Brom, he was most notably a key figure in a team that secured the club’s leading all-time Premier League finish in 2012/13 as they finished eighth – he managed four goals and one assist that campaign.

Gera is not only the leading Hungarian scorer in the league’s history, but his goals and creativity were massively influential at both of the teams he played for.

Márton Fülöp

Márton Fülöp contrastingly made his impact at the opposite end of the pitch as he earned eight clean sheets during his Premier League career, which is more than any other Hungarian goalkeeper has managed.

He played in the top division for Sunderland, Manchester City, and West Brom with his greatest abilities being showcased at the former.

In 2008/09 he played in 26 league games for the North East side – as he filled in for the injured Craig Gordon – and impressively managed six clean sheets for the relegation-threatened team.

Sunderland avoided relegation by just two points that year, and Fülöp’s strong shot-stopping certainly helped to influence the tight margins in their favour.

He played 13 games in the following season as Gordon encountered more injury issues, but his appearances thereafter were rare as he struggled for game time on loan at Manchester City and then after a permanent switch to West Brom.

Regardless of his short peak, Fülöp mounted a goalkeeping season in 2007/08 that no other Hungarian has produced similar to – not even the iconic Gábor Király.

Gera and Fülöp are ultimately Hungary’s leading players in Premier League history as they both have records that stand alone and their efforts greatly influenced their team’s fortunes for the better.

Who will be Hungary’s top scorer in the Nations League 2024/2025?

andorra vs hungary

A good month and a half after the European Championship final in Berlin’s Olympic Stadium, the Nations League starts at the beginning of September. In its fourth season, Hungary will compete in Group A3 against Germany, the Netherlands and Bosnia-Herzegovina. They will undoubtedly go into the match against the DFB team and the Oranjes as underdogs. All the more reason why individual quality will play a key role for Marco Rossi’s team. But who will be Hungary’s top scorer in the Nations League 2024/2025? We took a look at the possible candidates for you, and you can incorporate our analyses into your betting considerations. Helpful to know: SportyTrader offers an unbeatable Bet365 promo code.

Dominik Szoboszlai can always provide decisive goals

Dominik Szoboszlai is no longer the lynchpin of the Magyars’ play, but the 23-year-old could contribute a goal or two. His move from RB Leipzig to Liverpool FC in the summer of 2023 gave the team captain a further boost. None of his five goals for the Hungarian side since autumn 2023 have come at the European Championships. But his set-pieces are also highly dangerous and can always prove decisive. This is another reason why Szoboszlai is at the top of our list when it comes to the question “Who will be Hungary’s top scorer in the Nations League 2024/2025?”

Roland Sallai could therefore become Hungary’s top scorer in the 2024/2025 Nations League

Like Szoboszlai, Roland Sallai was denied a goal at Euro 2024, but he netted in the 3-0 win in the final rehearsal against Israel. After six years at SC Freiburg, the 29-year-old fast and tricky winger has recommended himself for higher tasks. That’s because he can score out of the blue. He could also benefit from the attention given to Liverpool’s Szoboszlai and capitalise on this space. His speed in transitional play against supposedly stronger opponents could also become a decisive factor.

The powerful header Martin Ádám can strike from set pieces

Martin Ádám returned to Europe after the European Championships from top South Korean club Ulsan and signed for Greek first division side Asteras Tripolis. The 29-year-old also failed to score a goal at the tournament in Germany, but his height and heading power make him a constant threat in set-piece situations. Sallai’s crosses, for example, could help him prove his heading prowess. His physicality could also be an advantage against the Netherlands’ defenders, for example. Ádám was not included in the starting line-up for any of the European Championship matches, but thanks to his qualities, he always got minutes on the pitch.

A fit Barnabás Varga is always a goal threat

We should actually have put Barnabás Varga at the top of our list in the question “Who will be Hungary’s top scorer in the Nations League 2024/2025?”. The fact that the Ferencváros attacker netted three times in June alone would have been a strong argument in favour. More specifically, the 29-year-old scored a brace in the friendly against Israel and in the 3-1 defeat to Switzerland at the European Championships. Like Ádám, Varga was also characterised by his heading ability, but this style of play led to his serious facial injury in the final group game against Scotland. Varga has since returned to training and wants to celebrate his comeback with a mask for the time being. However, it is difficult to say whether he will be ready for his first appearances in this competition.

What to expect of Hungary vs. Bosnia and Herzegovina in the UEFA Nations League?

mlsz hun team

After facing what’s expected to be a strong challenge in their UEFA Nations League opener against tournament favorites Germany, Hungary will face Bosnia and Herzegorvina in their second match. The match will be hosted at the Pukas Arena on 10th September, with Hungary ranking as the favorite going into this fixture. However, both sides will be looking to secure the three points after facing a challenging opener.

Bosnia and Herzegovina will kick off their campaign at the Phillips Stadion against Netherlands, who are also seeded in group 3 alongside Germany and Hungary. Both Hungary and Bosnia rank as the underdogs in their opening fixtures, which makes this a crucial match for both of them in their bid to qualify for the next stage. However, manager Sergej Barbarez’s side have struggled to find the net in their last three fixtures leading to their UEFA Nations League campaign.

So, can Hungary secure their position in Group 3 with a victory on Match Day 2 or will The Dragons record a surprise victory over Marco Rossi’s men? Here is what to expect as Hungary goes against Bosnia and Herzegovina as you bet on UEFA Nations League football matches with leading bookmakers.

Can Dominik Szoboszlai lead Hungary to victory over Bosnia?

Led by Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai, Hungary will head into this match as the favorite regardless of whether they win their opening match over Germany or not. Szoboszlai helped Hungary record a win in their opening match over Turkey during their 2020 UEFA Nations League campaign and will be crucial to their assault in this fixture.

Marco Rossi’s men will be hoping to impress in the UEFA Nations League, after falling short in their Euro 2024 campaign. The Hungarians finished the Euro 2024 campaign third in their group above Scotland, behind leaders Germany and Switzerland. However, that was not enough to get a spot in the last 16. That’s after the team went undefeated in their 2023 campaign.

Looking at their last three fixture, Hungary is confident they can perform incredibly well at the UEFA Nations League considering they will start their campaign against Germany, which crashed 2-0 in June at the Euro Group Stage. That said, football experts predict Hungary to dominate the game over Bosnia and record a 2-0 victory.

Will Bosnia and Herzegovina finally start a new chapter?

While Bosnia has been on a downward trajectory on the field over the last decade, the Dragons hope to start a new chapter during the 2024 UEFA Nations League. Bosnia and Herzegovina brought in a new manager, hoping to revamp their side as they prepare to mount a successful group stage campaign in September. However, they have struggled with their defense and attack in their last five fixtures, conceding multiple goals and failing to score.

Bosnia and Herzegovina will walk into this match hoping to salvage their campaign, which might be hard to achieve if they lose their opening game against Hungary. Unfortunately, their chances to mount a strong challenge against Hungary seem slim as they rank as the outright underdogs in their group following their loss against Italy, England, and Ukraine in their last three fixtures.

Euro 2024: Headlines from the round of 16

With the round of 16 reaching its culmination, all roads now lead to the quarter-finals for the remaining eight teams vying for glory at Euro 2024.

The Germany-based tournament certainly hasn’t disappointed, with shock results, wonder goals and dominant performances throughout.

The first knockout round featured all of the above, making it hard to predict for those who dabble in betting on football online

That said, let’s take a look at the headlines from the recent round of 16.

Edgy England leave it late against Slovakia

Despite entering Euro 2024 as one of the pre-tournament favourites, England have yet to find their spark in Germany and were just seconds away from crashing out of the competition in what surely would have been dubbed a national disaster.

Ivan Schranz gave the 45th-ranked team in the world the lead in the 25th minute and Slovakia were on the cusp of a historic victory and their first quarter-final appearance at the Euros before Jude Bellingham scored a stunning overhead kick with England’s first shot on target in the 95th minute.

That took the wind out of Slovakia’s sails and the momentum shifted going into extra-time as it took the Three Lions’ talisman Harry Kane just one minute to head in what would ultimately be the winning goal.

Dominant Dutch see off Romania

The Netherlands have a squad littered with star talent, yet they are considered merely outsiders to win the European Championships.

However, their dominant victory over Romania deserves rave reviews and is perhaps an indication that Ronald Koeman’s side needs to be taken more seriously in Germany.

Cody Gakpo opened the scoring for the Dutch in the 25th minute, and despite numerous chances to extend their lead, the game wasn’t put to bed until late on when substitute Donyell Malen scored a brace.

Diving Diogo Costa sends Portugal into the last eight

By this stage, we all know that Cristiano Ronaldo loves being front and centre at both club and international level.

That’s why the 39-year-old was left in tears on the pitch and at half-time in extra-time when his penalty was saved by Slovenian keeper Jan Oblak.

Ronaldo did convert from the spot in the preceding shoot-out, but he was by no means Portugal’s hero as Diogo Costa saved all three of Slovenia’s attempts to book his nation’s place in the last eight.

Spectacular Spain spare their blushes against Georgia

Spain were infamously knocked out of the 2022 Qatar World Cup by underdogs of the tournament Morocco in the round of 16 ,and it looked like La Roja were going to suffer a similar feat when dark horses Georgia took the lead inside 20 minutes.

However, Luis de la Fuente has transformed Spain into a swashbuckling side and they came back to win convincingly.

Rodri got them on level terms before half-time and second-half goals from Fabian Ruiz, Nico Williams and Dani Olmo sealed a comfortable 4-1 win.

Tricky Turkey upset Austria

The upset of the round of 16 came in Austria vs Turkey, as Vincenzo Montella’s side stunned Ralf Rangnick’s men to progress to the quarters for the first time.

Austria had been one of the standout teams of the group stage having topped Group D containing France, the Netherlands and Poland, but all their hard work came undone in a 2-1 defeat.

Turkey were 3/1 in places to win the game in the EURO 2024 winner bets. However, two goals from Merih Demiral gave them a comfortable advantage and Turkey held on to secure the win..

Defending champions Italy were beaten 2-0 by Switzerland, hosts Germany marched into the quarter-finals with a 2-0 win over Denmark and France found a late goal to beat Belgium 1-0.

Hungarian striker Barnabás Varga returns home after serious injury against Scotland at Euro 2024

The Hungarian striker Barnabás Varga was admitted to hospital after a horror facial injury against Scotland on Monday, 24 June 2024. However, he was released from the hospital on Wednesday after successful surgery and headed home with his partner.

Barnabás Varga was involved in a collision with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn and fell on his face, which caused fractures in his facial bones.

The striker fell on the ground after the nasty collision while the goalkeeper was coming to collect the cross. The fellow players, including the Hungary captain Dominik Szoboszlai, immediately yelled for a stretcher and medical staff.

The players covered him with the sheet as he received treatment for almost seven minutes on the field. It looked nervous all around, and Szoboszlai was almost in tears.

Varga was sent to the hospital after the initial assessment and treatment, where doctors suggested surgery. After successful surgery, Varga was released from the hospital on 24 June.

“Thank you for many messages of support. It’s good to be home again. Now comes a few weeks of rest. After that, I’ll focus on my recovery. I’ve looked back on the incident. I’m not the scary type,” said the striker, as highlighted on Ferencváros’ website.

The Hungarian Football Federation posted on X confirming his return, “Barnabás Varga was released from hospital this morning in Stuttgart and is currently recovering in his home in Hungary.”

Reaction From the Captain and Team

Hungary players and captain immediately went for Varga’s help and were not happy with the delayed reaction from medical staff. The captain Szoboszlai even called for a change to medical protocols after the game.

“It looked bad, it was bad, he felt bad,” Dominic Szoboszlain told the reporters while reflecting on Barnabás’ injury. “I don’t really know what the protocol is, but if our doctors say we need immediate help, I don’t think they should be walking.”

“It’s not my decision, but something needs to be changed. Even if somebody is on the ground and you see it was a big crash, then just go on the field. Even if the referee is stopping, just go on. And if you see nothing is serious, you can just go down, and it’s finished. But seconds can help a lot,” Dominic continued.

The captain and players showed whole-hearted support to their teammate during his treatment and even after he went to the hospital. Dominik Szoboszlain wore Varga’s jersey back to front and Csoboth paid tribute to him by holding his jersey during his celebration.

How Did the UEFA React?

UEFA, the European soccer governing body, released the official statement regarding Varga’s injury, said, “With regards to the medical intervention following the head injury of Hungary striker Varga, we would like to clarify that the intervention of the team doctor happened within 15 seconds of the injury, followed by second stadium doctor, to conduct the first assessment of the injury and provide the treatment, as per the customary medical procedure.”

“The qualified team was waiting on the pitch side, according to their protocol, and arrived on the pitch as soon as their intervention was requested by the medical staff to take the player for his immediate transfer to hospital.”

“The coordination between the medical staff on the site was professional, and everything was done according to the applicable medical procedure. There was no delay in the treatment and assessment of the player.”

Speaking of the horrible incident after the match, Angus Gunn also told the BBC, “It was a bit of a blur. I thought I had to come in, and I thought I had done well. It was painful, and hopefully, the guy is okay. I can’t remember much about it.”

Hungary’s Euro 2024 Campaign

Despite winning against Scotland with the help of Kevin Csoboth’s 100th-minute strike, the Hungarian side is out of the tournament. Although the different players of the team have domestic or league trophies, their major trophy drought continues.

The players can still hold their heads after grabbing three points in the group stage, one more than their last Euro Cup. However, they would regret a missed opportunity against Germany.

They were in the contest until the last group F matches but slipped to 5th in the third-place rankings as Georgia defeated Portugal 2-0. They then had a worse goal difference than Slovenia, which eliminated them from the tournament.

“It was a disadvantage that Hungary was in the first group to finish their matches, so other teams already knew exactly what was required of them before their own last match,” said the Hungarian Football Federation.

FM Szijjártó slams US for ‘nonsensical’ accusation against Hungary

szijjártó diplomacy blinken us

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken made a “nonsensical accusation” against Hungary, Péter Szijjártó, the foreign minister, said on his Facebook page on Thursday.

Szijjártó: This is nonsensical

Szijjártó said Blinken had criticised Hungary over the freedom of religion, saying officials used “anti-Semitic tropes”.

“This accusation is especially nonsensical from the foreign minister of a country where attacks of intimidation against Jewish people have increased dramatically in the recent period and where anti-Semitic unrest has taken place at universities,” the minister said.

“Meanwhile, Israel’s national team and football clubs will play their matches in Hungary again in the next season because they feel safe here,” he said.

Varga was injured when he swung into the Scottish box after a free kick and Gunn jumped over him. The Hungarian star appeared to hit Gunn’s arm and was left lying on the ground.

The referee immediately stopped play, and medical staff rushed onto the pitch. A screen was placed around Varga while he received treatment. Medical care was sometimes hindered, and the Hungarian players rushed to get their fellow player on a stretcher as soon as possible.

After a six-minute slide, Varga was carried off the pitch on a stretcher, and the Stuttgart Arena crowd rose as one to applaud him. The host broadcaster allowed a replay of the incident to be shown, and VAR also checked for a possible penalty against Gunn, but no penalty was awarded.

With this result, Hungary still have a chance of progressing if they can secure one of the “best third places”.

According to the Hungarian Football Association, Varga’s condition is stable but will not play in the continental tournament again.

Following the shocking incident, prominent footballers such as France’s world champion striker Antonine Griezmann and England and Chelsea star Cole Palmer have also voiced their support for the Ferencváros striker. Palmer wrote that all his thoughts and sympathies are with Varga, while Griezmann expressed his support with a red heart on social media. The French international’s social media page also posted the Hungarian striker’s number 19 jersey.

In addition to footballers and sporting federations, the world’s best-known football portals have also wished the Hungarian striker a speedy recovery, with SportBible and BBC Sports also publishing a special post on the striker’s misfortune. The most famous journalist in the world of football, Fabrizio Romano, also expressed his support for Varga.

Varga started his career with Austrian Bundesliga side Lafnitz before signing for Hungarian side Gyirmót in 2019. There, he scored 29 goals in 60 games, earning him a transfer to Paks, where he continued his excellent goalscoring record, scoring 29 goals in 33 games. This record earned him a contract with Hungarian record champions Ferencváros. The 29-year-old scored 29 goals in 40 games to lift his side to the Hungarian league title and earn a place in his country’s national team for the European Championship.
