Hungarian patients need to wait years for surgery

surgery, hospital, doctors

After having lifted most of the restrictions in the country, all Hungarian hospitals and doctors’ offices are allowed to treat patients who are not infected with the coronavirus but have some other health problems. All healthcare institutions are obligated to maintain strict precautions and take care of workers and patients with the necessary protection methods (face masks, sanitisers, etc).

Pénzcentrum reported that once the restrictions are lifted, the number of patients who are waiting for some kind of surgery at hospitals will increase again, which means that the average waiting time would also be longer. This is because, during the days when the restrictions were in place, hospitals could only treat patients with coronavirus, and all kinds of surgeries were deferred to a later appointment. This means that the delays must be completed first and after that come the new appointments.

There were, of course, exceptional cases which could not wait, but all other non-urgent surgeries were delayed.

Surgeries involving prosthesis are the only procedures which make patients wait almost a year. The average waiting period is 389 days; in the southern regions of Hungary, it is 271, but in the western parts, it can increase to 571. In Győr, it is 594, and in Zala County, it is 662 days. The most terrible numbers, though, were reported in relation to hip and knee prosthesis surgeries;

1,833 and 1,585 days on average, almost five years.

Surgical procedures with eyes have a shorter waiting time. In five hospitals in Hungary, it is only ten days, but there are others where this number is twenty-eight because many patients are waiting for this kind of surgery. According to statistics, 2,214 patients are currently waiting for eye surgery. Last year, different numbers were reported; to read about the situation in 2019, click on the article below.

Coronavirus – Hungary’s protective measures successful, effective

Hungary’s protective measures during the first phase of the novel coronavirus epidemic were “successful and effective”, the head of the Prime Minister’s Office said on Thursday.

Hungary has been more successful in protecting against the epidemic than any western European country, he told a regular press briefing.

Gulyás noted that the state of emergency is scheduled to be lifted from June 16, and theatres, museums, cinemas and spas will be allowed to reopen.

The cabinet decided on Wednesday to maintain restrictions on public events, he said. Drive-in concerts, however, are generally being allowed, he added.

Gulyás said that shopping times reserved for the elderly who are most vulnerable to the virus will be maintained and the ban on visits to elderly care homes, shelters and hospitals will also remain in place until the state of emergency ends. The chief medical officer will make decisions on any future measures, he added.

The chief of staff said keeping the epidemic alert level high was justified. The operative board will remain in place and hospitals will continue to take epidemic developments into consideration, he said. The chief medical officer retains the right to introduce measures required to prevent a second wave, he added.

Gulyás said once the government’s emergency powers are ceased, parliament will decide which special government decrees introduced in recent months should be kept.

He said the government had so far spent 590 billion forints (EUR 1.7m) on epidemic-related measures, which he said was “necessary and justified” spending, he added.

Hungary’s health-care system is on stand-by to handle any future mass infections, he said, adding that the epidemic has been successfully contained, so this contingency was unlikely to be acted on. All equipment purchased so far will be available if a second wave arrives, he added.

Guylás said protective measures such as wearing masks and keeping social distancing of 1.5 metres should still be observed.

Hungarian surgeon performed Europe’s first lung transplantation on a coronavirus patient

surgery, hospital, doctors

Last week, György Lang performed Europe’s first lung transplantation on a coronavirus patient. The 45-year-old woman was operated at the Medical University of Vienna, which occupies a leading position as a centre for lung transplantations.

In his interview with Válasz Online, the surgeon explained that the 45-year-old mother was treated in Klagenfurt, and she was attached to an artificial lung for six weeks.

The colleagues at Klagenfurt felt that they had reached the end of their professional opportunities, so I immediately decided to take the patient,

said the doctor. He added that the procedure was not performed instead of other surgeries since Austria chose a different path in health care than Hungary: it did not reduce standard medical care radically but aimed to have enough capacity for coronavirus patients while being able to treat other patients. Additionally, Austria has not closed its borders to Eurotransplant, an international organ exchange organisation, so the donor organ arrived without any obstacles.

Dr Lang described the actions of the Austrian health management by three keywords: promptness, precision and proportionality. Although Hungary has been very successful in avoiding mass infections, it has to be noted that Austria has a lower fatality rate. In Austria, 670 fatalities have been registered so far out of nearly 17,000 infections, while in Hungary, this number is more than 500 out of less than 4,000 confirmed coronavirus infections.

During the 9-hour surgery, the doctor and his team successfully removed the dead lungs and replaced them with new donor lungs. Currently, the patient’s condition is satisfactory, and she is on the way to recovery.

György Lang’s previous activities in Hungary were also mentioned during the interview. He was asked to start a lung transplantation program by the rector of Semmelweis University. Hungarian lung transplantations were performed at Semmelweis University’s Department of Thoracic Surgery located at the National Institute of Oncology, according to the conditions of Dr Lang. The surgeon explained that he could work very effectively with the staff of the institute of oncology. Still, the management of the institute was rather hostile from the beginning, which started to hinder the cooperation between the two institutions and his work as a surgeon.

Hungarian first responders’ humorous way of celebrating children’s day – Videos

Children's Day Hungarian Firefighters

There have been celebrations of Children’s Day in Hungary as early as the first decade of the 20th century. Although there have been changes to it throughout the years, since 1954, Hungarians have celebrated Children’s Day on the last Sunday of May. Now let’s look at how the first responders in Hungary celebrated this joyful day.

The Hungarian National Ambulance Services

Pál GyÅ‘rfi, the spokesman of the Hungarian National Ambulance Services, made a video with some of his colleagues where they thanked the responsible behaviour of children during the COVID-19 pandemic. He said that thanks to them, Hungary was able to slow down the virus, and paramedics had fewer patients thanks to children.

The Hungarian National Police Headquarters

The Hungarian Police created a video where one of the policemen’s daughter has a nightmare about how Children’s Day got stolen by somebody. In the video, the father searches for evidence and attempts to arrest the criminal who is responsible for the theft.

The editorial office of the daily newspaper, Kisalföld, received several answers to their question of what kids want for Children’s Day, and with the help of the police headquarters in GyÅ‘r-Moson-Sopron County, they made the dream of five children come true, you can read on Police.hu.

The Hungarian National Directorate General for Disaster Management

In their video, you can see some of the aspects of the routine of the firemen in Hungary and how a young boy’s dream came true when they helped him become a fireman for a short day.

But this is not all. Due to the current pandemic, the usual demonstration at the fire station in Sopron could not be held, so the firemen made a video of their drill which you can watch online.

And it still is not over. In another fire department in our country, firefighters reenacted some scenes from Disney animations.

Obama takes jab at U.S. government over coronavirus response

obama

Former President Barack Obama took a jab at the U.S. government on Saturday over its response to the coronavirus pandemic.

“More than anything, this pandemic has fully, finally torn back the curtain on the idea that so many of the folks in charge know what they’re doing,” Obama said during a virtual commencement speech for historically black colleges and universities, without naming specific officials.

“A lot of them aren’t even pretending to be in charge,” he added.

In a virtual commencement speech for the high school class of 2020 hours later, Obama said “the world is turned upside down” by the pandemic and that it “has shaken up the status quo and laid bare a lot of our country’s deep-seated problems — from massive economic inequality to ongoing racial disparities to a lack of basic health care.”

“If we’re going to save the environment and defeat future pandemics, then we’re going to have to do it together,” he noted.

“Leave behind all the old ways of thinking that divide us – sexism, racial prejudice, status, greed – and set the world on a different path.”

More than 1.46 million people in the United States have infected with the coronavirus, with at least 88,754 deaths, according to a tally from Johns Hopkins University on Saturday. Both numbers are far higher than those in any other country or region.

The current administration of the United States has aggressively defended its handling of the public health crisis, while critics have pointed out that its leaders and some officials ignored early warnings, were slow to act and not responding adequately, and tried to politicize the situation to shift blames.

White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany, in a statement on Saturday, said that President Donald Trump’s response against the coronavirus “has saved lives.”

McEnany also accused Obama, Trump’s predecessor, of leaving a depleted stockpile.

Obama, a Democrat, served as the 44th U.S. president from 2009 to 2017.

Coronavirus – Ministry aiming to gradually restart health services

coronavirus hungary nurses

The health government’s “focus is on gradually restarting services”, the human resources ministry said in a statement on Friday.

The statement quoted Miklós Kásler, the minister, as telling hospital directors in a teleconference that Monday would see “a new phase in relaunching hospital services”.

The minister said that as a result of timely government action and a disciplined approach by residents the number of active and hospitalised coronavirus cases had decreased, and a third of the reserved beds in hospitals could again be used for routine treatments.

Kásler warned, however, that the epidemic was not over and stressed the importance of taking steps gradually.

According to the statement, hospitals could now “handle the number of beds more flexibly” and reintroduce planned inpatient therapies and elective procedures, as well as screening programmes.

Screening patients for coronavirus will be a crucial component aimed at protecting hospitals from the infection, the document said.

Concerning plans to concentrate Covid-19 patients in two hospitals in Budapest, the ministry said in its statement that 15 of the country’s 41 coronavirus hospitals had fewer than 10 patients each, and they could be transferred to central facilities “at a higher level of prevention”.

The government will spend 8.3 billion forints (EUR 23.4m) on new medical and IT equipment for hospitals and clinics in Budapest and Pest County, the human resources minister said on Friday.

A total of 23 hospitals and outpatient clinics will be getting new equipment under the Healthy Budapest Programme (EBP), Miklos Kasler told a press conference.

The procurement will cover diagnostic, imaging, laboratory and surgical instruments, Kásler said. The government will also purchase endoscopic, anesthesiological, intensive-care and operating equipment as well as equipment needed for physiotherapy, sterilisation and hygiene.

Hospital furniture will also be procured, and hospitals and clinics will also be equipped with printers and 4,000 new computers, he added.

The government is committed to creating a “new health culture” centred on prevention and improving the quality of the equipment used for treatment, Kasler said.

Under the EBP, the government will spend more than 700 billion forints on upgrading hospitals and outpatient clinics in Budapest and Pest County, alongside Budapest’s medical Semmelweis University, between now and 2026, he said.
