Kyiv besieged: 18-month-old Hungarian girl with cancer had to flee to Hungary!
Luca is barely past a year and a half, but she has already experienced the hardships of life at a young age. The little Hungarian girl from Transcarpathia is struggling with serious cancer, and now, they had to flee the war: she has been in Hungary as a war refugee since last Friday, where she is waiting for surgery. Blikk.hu made a report about the whole story.
The surgery of the girl could have only been performed in Kyiv
Luca’s parents had no choice but to flee to Hungary when the war began. Although they lived in Nagybégány, not far from the Hungarian border, in the Beregszász region, the surgery needed for the little girl could only be performed in the Ukrainian capital, hundreds of kilometres away, in Kyiv. However, this was no longer an option due to the Russian bombings.
In early December last year, it was revealed that Luca was struggling with a pelvic tumour, which resulted in two chemotherapy treatments. She should have had surgery after completing the treatments, but there is currently chaos in Kyiv hospitals. Doctors and nurses are fighting a superhuman fight for patients while the sound of sirens and bombings seeps in from the street. The patients hid in the basements of the buildings, receiving care there. Luca’s surgery and her life were in danger, but they could not undergo surgery at the Kyiv hospital.
They had to move
Since the surgery did not take place, the family had to move on. According to the family, although their home in the Kárpátalja / Transcarhpathia / Zakarpatska region is still safe, many are panicking, food prices have started to rise, and there is a shortage of stocks at times.
However, the family cannot run out of medication or wait months for vital surgery. Her father, mother and the child, Luca, came to Hungary.
Miskolc is the new home
The family was transported to the border by Ukrainian ambulances, from where they were taken to Miskolc by the staff of the National Ambulance Service. Thanks to the ambulances, the crossing was significantly faster, you would have had to wait at least a day by car.
In Miskolc, they are now trying to find out if Luca is in an operable state or if she will need even more chemotherapy. Friends and relatives at home, in Ukraine, ask about them several times a day, but the family says that they are safe now. They mentioned that they pray for them as well, they need it on the other side of the border too.
