Hungary border control

Ombudsman to open office near Hungary-Ukraine border

Hungary’s ombudsman’s office on Tuesday said it will open a local base near the Hungary-Ukraine border.

Ákos Kozma, the ombudsman for fundamental rights, visited the police headquarters of Szabolcs-Szatmar-Bereg County to enquire about the handling of refugees fleeing Ukraine and further ways of supporting them.

“I consider it especially important to monitor the situation in person in these extraordinary times, and my staff and I are constantly working on providing legal and humanitarian aid to as many people as possible,”

the ombudsman’s office quoted Kozma as saying.

The local office near the border will provide administrative and legal assistance to refugees.

The ombudsman’s office added that it is also launching a donation drive to help people fleeing Ukraine.

At the border-passage of Záhony 10-15 cars pass the Ukrainian border into Hungary per hour. On the Ukrainian side the waiting times are 8-10 hours on average, but this is not because of the Hungarian border patrols, they accept cars even on 4 parallel lanes. It is still on the Ukrainian side that the automotives are crammed in line, due to the Ukrainian controllers. Because of Military law, men 18-60yrs are not allowed out, but citizens with a double-nationality (e.g. incl. Hungarian) are, as well as citizens of 3rd countries. It is the control of these which slows down their exit.

On the Hungarian side 90% of arrivals are women and children. At the train statio of Záhony the situation is sometimes more critical, but mainly possible to keep in balance. Regularly approaching trains can bring you to the Nyugati (Western) Station in Budapest. For Ukrainian citizens this ride is free of charge. Because of the controls on the Ukrainian side, these trains usually are 1-2 hours late.

The challenge is with the late-comers via Csap who arrive at midnight, when there is no more connection to Budapest. In the past days these were 200-300 people. So they need to be taken care of until the next connective move to Budapest. This is partly taken care of in the local Educational/Cultural Center. Several charitable organisations have moved to the train station, offering water, food, hygiene goods.

70-80 Ukrainian Roma mothers and children are “stuck” on the train-station, who partly cannot, partly do not want to travel on, their fate is not clarified yet, but the local Roma self-governing organisations (in Záhony) are at the location. According to Police informations, some from this group are already returning to Ukraine.

The sitaution in Beregsurány and Tiszabecs is insofar different from that in Záhony that here there is also crossing on foot. The Hungarian border police are decently standing aside, the entry happens with remarkable speed and minimal bureaucracy. This is also the case for arriving pets. Among arriving pedestrians we already saw people arriving with cats.

Read alsoHungarian Forint reached its historic low against Euro today!

Right off the border crossing, a humanitarian aid base is beginning to be established. Here not only water and food, but also warming and baby-mother tents are available, which is necessary as temperatures are at the freezing point, especially after dark.

Here we would like to draw attention to something which many don’t understand:

mothers are sitting beside the road with their children, who however don’t ask for being given a trip or help.

The people who arrive at the Ukrainian-Hungarian border are to ca. 90% “organized refugees”, which means, they are meeting at the border with friends & relatives from Western Europe. This can take hours or even days, until the latter have arrived. And there are Western cars waiting along the road, with a variety of license-plates, and are waiting for those they agreed to pick up.

At present, thousands of refugees are appearing at the Hungarian-Ukrainian border-passages every day, and this number will not increase until the administrative work of the Ukrainian forces slows down their exit.

The Western Train Station in Budapest (“Nyugati”) has also become a place of picking up refugees, where the aforementioned people from Záhony are arriving. The arrival of the trains is difficult to calculate because of the delays. Many arrive in transit to elsewhere, meaning with the next chance they will travel on towards Western Europe. Here the mood is calm as well, there is caritative aid on location. In connection with these, the availability of 1-1 nightly sleepovers/accommodation around the train station have also risen in value.

Hungarian donations of food and fuel arrive in Transcarpathia

Donations Arrive to Ukraine from Hungary

An aid delivery of 28 tonnes of food and 100,000 litres of vehicle fuel from Hungary arrived in Transcarpathia, Ukraine’s westernmost region, Hungary’s foreign minister said at the Záhony border crossing on Sunday.

At a press conference, Péter Szijjártó said the government is working closely with the Ecumenical Charity, which collected the donations of food. He added that his ministry would provide 1 million euros to the charity to support the next delivery of aid.

He also acknowledged Hungarian oil and gas company MOL for the donation of vehicle fuel which will be used for hospitals, ambulances, humanitarian organisations and catastrophe protection agencies.

He said 66,000 people have crossed the border from Ukraine into Hungary so far. From Monday, six aid centres will start operating at points along the border, he added.

Szijjártó acknowledged the “exemplary cooperation” between the Hungarian police and Ukrainian border guards.

Viktor Mikita, the governor of Transcarpathia, thanked the Hungarian government for the humanitarian aid. He said Transcarpathia has taken in 25,000 refugees from other parts of Ukraine.

Refugees from Ukraine at the Border in Felsőnémeti

More than 62,000 people entered Hungary from Ukraine between Thursday and midnight on Saturday, the police headquarters of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County said on the police website on Sunday.

The police data show 19,978 entered Hungary across the Hungarian-Ukrainian border on Thursday, 19,618 on Friday and 23,140 on Saturday.

The number of people who crossed the border from Hungary into Ukraine was also higher than usual, reaching 5,452 on Thursday, 5,744 on Friday and 7,810 on Saturday, the data show.

The county HQ said the police are working at full capacity at all five border crossings between Hungary and Ukraine, ensuring entry to arrivals from Ukraine.

Nobody seeking refuge in Hungary is being turned away at the border, the police added.

Arrivals from Ukraine who aren’t being assisted by family or friends, or who have nowhere to go for material reasons, are being accompanied to shelters where they are getting accommodations and food, police.hu said.

Hungary’s National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing has registered ten applications, so far, for refugee status since the start of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, the authority told MTI early Sunday.

Most of the people entering Hungary from Ukraine have been ethnic Hungarians with Hungarian citizenship or met the conditions for legal residency in Hungary, the authority said.

The authority added that applications for refugee status may be submitted in person at any collection centre 24 hours a day, or at offices of the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing during opening hours.

Applicants for refugee status are ensured accommodations and food, the authority said.

Refugees get assistance in Lónya and other Hungarian border towns

Hungarian Border at Beegsurány 4

War refugees are getting assistance in Lónya, on Hungary’s border with Ukraine, from the local council, charities and people who want to help.

The local council of Lónya is organising convoys to bring the refugees to the village’s recreation centre and a Reformed Church building.

Mayor Ernő Nagy told MTI that the local council has placed 300-400 people fleeing Ukraine in temporary accommodations in the past days. The council has used its own resources to buy them food, and local cafeterias are serving them meals, he added.

Charities of the Reformed and Baptist churches as well as of the Order of Malta are also helping in Lónya. The Baptist charity has set up cots in the local gymnasium and the Hungarian Red Cross has brought tents.

Nagy said people have offered food and clothing to the refugees, and many are assisting them with lodging.

The Lónya border crossing is operating with extended hours and is now open until 11pm at night.

In the nearby border settlement of Barabás, the deputy mayor said the first arrivals from Ukraine were ethnic Hungarians from Transcarpathia, but now are mostly Ukrainians who do not speak Hungarian. Those people are being met by relatives or friends working in Poland, the Czech Republic or Slovakia, Ilona Sándor Biri said.

With the help of charity organisations, 50 cots have been set up in the local recreation centre, she added.

Strasbourg condemns Hungary for detaining Afghan family for 209 days

Migration Migráció Bevándorlás Border Határ Röszke

According to the latest decision of the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, the Hungarian state illegally detained an Afghan family of six in the transit zone of Röszke.

The conditions of detention for the children were so bad that they constituted inhuman and degrading treatment under the European Convention on Human Rights. The family represented by the Helsinki Committee was therefore awarded EUR 17,000 in damages.

Inhuman conditions

An Afghan family fleeing the Taliban waited nine months in Serbia to enter the transit zone back in 2017. The law enforcement agency said they lived in the hottest container prison during the warm summer months, with no shade at all in the whole transit zone. The injured and sick father did not receive adequate medical treatment, writes Telex.

The school-age children were not dealt with by the authorities for five months. One child, on the other hand, was used as a translator: he had to communicate between the two sides. He was severely traumatised when he regularly witnessed police transporting asylum seekers, including pregnant women, outside of the transit zone, handcuffed.

They were finally recognised as refugees

The release of the Afghan family, even after the interim measure of the Strasbourg court, took place only when they finally received a decision recognising them as refugees. After they were released, they found a new home in another European country.

“Of course we welcome the verdict. Although the Strasbourg decision does not erase the traumatic memory of the 209-day detention, it does confirm that what the detained children and their parents experienced as inhuman was inhuman under written law,” said Barbara Pohárnok, a lawyer at the Hungarian Helsinki Committee, the legal representative of the Afghan family, according to the Helsinki Committee’s announcement.

Similar decision was made last March, more to come

According to his assessment, an important judgment was delivered in a more general sense because the Strasbourg court was again in line with the 2020 decision, which declared detention in transit zones as illegal detention. “It can also give hope to the many, many clients of the Helsinki Committee who are still waiting for a decision by the Strasbourg court.”

A similar verdict was declared last March about another Afghan family in Strasbourg; they had been detained illegally for months as well.

European Court of Justice says Hungary violated EU law with the transit zone system

In 2020, the European Court of Justice decided that Hungary had violated EU law with the transit zone. The court said that the Hungarian government had breached its EU obligations by failing to provide effective access to a fair asylum procedure. It was also unlawful, according to the judgment, for the Hungarian state to illegally detain asylum seekers in the transit zones and to limit the number of applications processed per day.

1,600 refugees arrived in Záhony in two days!

Refugees from Ukraine in Záhony

Some 1,600 people fleeing the fighting in Ukraine have arrived in the eastern Hungarian border town of Záhony over the last two days, the town’s mayor said on Friday.

László Helmeczi told MTI that because the majority of the arrivals have already been taken to other parts of the country to stay with relatives or acquaintances, the local council only had to provide placement for 80 people, mainly women and children. The refugees have been placed in the local cultural centre, he said, adding that they were sleeping on mattresses donated by the locals and have received blankets from the Hungarian Red Cross.

One refugee woman who fled with her children from Tysaashvan (Tiszaásvány) said people in and around Uzhhorod (Ungvár)

were “very afraid” after hearing reports of Russian forces preparing to bomb the local airport.

She added that her husband had stayed behind in Ukraine, but she and her children would seek help from relatives in Kaposvár, in south-western Hungary.

Helmeczi said many Hungarians had offered to take refugees to Budapest and some are prepared to drive families all the way to Kaposvár. Miklós Szendrei, the community coordinator of the Hungarian Reformed Church Aid, said many private individuals have signalled their intent to help, with someone even offering to place refugees in their six-bedroom flat in Nyiregyhaza, in the east.

He said that while Thursday’s arrivals were mostly from western Ukraine’s Transcarpathia region, more and more people were now coming from parts of Ukraine that are farther from the border.

3-5 km long queues at the Ukrainian-Hungarian border crossings!

Cars Ukraine border

Ukrainian-Hungarian border crossings and Hungarian diplomatic representations are operating at full capacity, the foreign minister said on Friday.

In a video posted on Facebook, Péter Szijjártó said that all embassy staff in Kiev and the Berehove (Beregszász) and Uzhhorod (Ungvár) consulates were providing assistance to Hungarians and non-Hungarians alike. Szijjártó said he was in continuous contact with the Hungarian diplomatic missions and the Hungarian Cultural Association of Transcarpathia, in western Ukraine.

Meanwhile, all five border crossing stations are open. Those at Barabás and Hónya have had their

opening hours extended, and are now open from 6am to 11pm, he said.

The minister cautioned that waiting times were long and the tailback of cars waiting on the Ukrainian side was 3-5km.

A political consensus is needed on recognising the paramount importance of the security of Hungary and the Hungarian people in connection with the war unfolding in Ukraine, the leader of the Fidesz parliamentary group said on Friday. Hungary is well prepared for all eventualities regarding the conflict, Máté Kocsis told the media in Parliament after attending a closed-door meeting of the defence and law enforcement committee in which the heads of national defence and law enforcement gave a briefing on the situation in Ukraine.

Hungary is ready to provide humanitarian aid and to fulfil its duties arising from its membership of NATO and EU,

Kocsis said. “Hungary won’t be sending troops or weapons to Ukraine,” Kocsis said. “We don’t want to take part in this conflict.” In the closed committee session, he said, it was “reassuring” that the tone of opposition members was more moderate than in their public statements.

It’s official: Hungary lets in everybody coming from Ukraine!

Ukraine refugees

It has become official that Hungary will let in everybody coming from Ukraine. The relevant government decree was published yesterday evening. Russia attacked Ukraine yesterday, the soldiers of the two armies are fighting in many parts of the country. Meanwhile, many Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv, suffered shelling and bombing.

The government acted quickly

Thus, it is not surprising that thousands of Ukrainian citizens started heading to the border crossings. As we reported yesterday, the refugees are crossing the Hungarian border by foot in Beregsurány. Based on the report of the Hungarian News Agency’s correspondent, at least 400-500 people with suitcases and other luggage walked across the border yesterday.

Before, the Hungarian Helsinki Committee said that Hungary must change the relevant laws to receive the refugees from Ukraine. That was because they could not submit an application for refugee status at the border crossings or anywhere in Hungary. Refugees could submit said application only at the Hungarian embassy in Kyiv. The relevant regulation has been in effect since May 2020. Therefore, the organisation demanded immediate legislation from the government. Otherwise, Hungary could not keep PM Orbán’s promise to Ukrainian citizens fleeing from the war, the organisation said.

According to telex.hu, the relevant government decree was published yesterday evening. According to it, the Hungarian government guarantees temporary protection for those who leave Ukraine because of the armed conflict. The rule applies to all Ukrainian citizens, as well as third-world citizens residing lawfully in Ukraine.

The government did not submit a bill to solve the problem. They did not need to because of the special legal order introduced during the epidemic. The document has been in effect since 10 pm yesterday, so refugees showing up at the Hungarian borders will be treated following its measures.

However, there is one exception

According to 444.hu, Ukrainian President Zelenskiy ordered general mobilisation yesterday. That means no male citizen eligible for military service between 18 and 60 can leave Ukraine. Of course, local Hungarians do not want to join the war because it is not theirs. Therefore, many of them would like to escape conscription by coming to Hungary. Legally, they can only do so if they have Hungarian citizenship, a valid Hungarian passport, and they used that travel document before. Many do so, for example, at the Beregsurány border crossing.

However, not only men would like to come to Hungary. Families with children, even many older people are packing all their valuables into suitcases and are seeking safety in Hungary. Apart from the government and the churches, many local governments offered their help. For example, the 2nd and the 1st districts of Budapest did so.

Hungary bans travels to Ukraine, helps foreigners get out

Ukraine Ungvár bank crowd

“Travel to Ukraine is not recommended under any circumstances,” the Hungarian foreign ministry said on the website of its consular service on Thursday.

The ministry has asked Hungarian nationals staying in Ukraine to register for consular protection. All Hungarian representations in Ukraine are at the disposal of Hungarians contacting them personally or by phone, the ministry said.

Telephone numbers of the Hungarian embassy and consulate in Kyiv, the chief consulate in Uzhhorod (Ungvár), as well as the consular office in Berehove (Beregszász) are listed at https://konzuliszolgalat.kormany.hu/ukrajnara-vonatkozo-utazasi-tanacsok220224.

Furthermore, Hungary’s foreign minister said late on Thursday that India and Iran had turned to Hungary for help in rescuing their citizens stranded in Ukraine. Péter Szijjártó wrote on Facebook that he had spoken by phone to the foreign ministers of India and Iran concerning their request that Hungary open a humanitarian corridor to the nearest airport for their citizens who reach the Ukrainian-Hungarian border.

“Of course, we will help everyone get home safely,”

he said. The minister told his counterparts that leaving Kyiv by road was extremely difficult, adding, however, that they could count on Hungary’s help.

The Hungarian-Ukrainian border stations of Lónya-Dzvinkove (Harangláb) and Barabás-Kosyny (Kaszony) have extended their opening hours until 11pm, Hungarian police said on Thursday evening. Up until Feb. 28 both crossings will be open from 7am to 11pm, they said.

Police said that drivers heading for Hungary have to wait for at least an hour to cross the border. The measures have been taken in light of extra traffic at the border in connection with the Ukraine crisis.

All staff of Hungary’s embassy in Kyiv are working to ensure that everyone seeking assistance is provided it, the foreign minister said on Thursday, but “evacuating people [from the country] is basically impossible”. Péter Szijjártó said in a video posted on Facebook that Ukraine’s entire airspace was closed with a ban on civil aviation, while evacuation by road was also impossible.

Four Hungarian Wizz Air aircraft with their crews are stuck in Ukraine, Szijjártó said, adding there were no Hungarians among the crew.

The Hungarian embassy received 60 calls “when telecommunications services were functioning and staff members were not in the basement”, the minister said, adding that the embassy would shelter Hungarians seeking security.

He asked Hungarians to call the consular service’s 24-hour hotline, which is operating with extra staff. On Thursday, the consular service received 80 calls, he said. So far, 191 Hungarians in Ukraine and 154 in Russia have applied for consular protection, he said, adding that the staff were in contact with them.

Transcarpathia has switched to military administration,

  • Szijjártó said.

Concerning lorry drivers in transit, the minister said the government was doing everything to ensure that they continue their journey or find safe haven. The government is watching developments closely and will take every measure “to protect Hungary and the Hungarian people from this war”, he said.

“Hungary stands by Ukraine and by Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, and condemns Russia’s military action,”

he said. The government “will do everything to prevent Hungary possibly getting mixed up in the conflict of war,” he added.

Ukraine border

Since Thursday morning, at least 400-500 people with suitcases and other luggage have walked across the border from Ukraine to Hungary at Beregsurány, MTI’s correspondent reported at the scene.

Most people were arriving in groups of two or three, many waiting close to the border on the Hungarian side to be picked up by family or friends. Many were young couples carrying small children in their arms or pushing prams.

A young man said there were long queues of cars on the Ukrainian side, most of them with Transcarpathian plates. He said he would stay with a relative living in Hungary, adding that he had been concerned that he may be conscripted into the Ukrainian army had he stayed in Ukraine.

Another young man and his girlfriend said they had had plans to travel to the Netherlands. “We did not know how long the borders would stay open and decided to leave immediately,” they said. They also said they had seen long queues at ATMs because withdrawals were limited, adding that fuel sales at filling stations were also restricted.

MTI has also received reports of many refugees crossing into Hungary on foot at Tiszabecs border station too.

Hungary is prepared to face challenges of the global economy, and despite developments in Ukraine, “Hungary’s financial stability is strong”, Finance Minister Mihály Varga said on Facebook on Thursday. Varga said the government’s economic cabinet had met to discuss the situation in Ukraine.

The government has “increased financial reserves, improved balance indicators and strengthened the confidence of investors and rating agencies”,

the minister said. “Hungary’s finances are on secure foundations,” he added.

Migrants attack Hungarian guards with improvised weapons, slingshots – VIDEO

Illegal Migrant Border Fence Hungary

According to several reports from the Hungarian police, the migration wave that originally hit Hungary in 2015, still proves to be an ongoing issue, although in less intensity.

Illegal migrants are trying to cross the fence while avoiding the border guards. Sometimes they even ask human traffickers to bring them through the border, or lately, they have been directly provoking guards and attempting to hurt them with improvised weapons.

Previously, we have talked about an armed migrant hunter unit. The unit is looking for traces of illegal activity committed by migrants at night in the woods. They also utilise municipal surveillance camera systems as further assistance.

The main goal of the unit is to prevent illegal migrants from damaging nearby properties or forests within the border area.

You can read about the unit more in detail HERE.

Just about a month ago, the surveillance cameras of the border fence have recorded several smaller groups of illegal migrants purposefully throwing twigs at the border guards at the Serbian-Hungarian border, sometimes even using ladders to try to climb over the fence or just simply damage it.

If you would like to read more details and watch the video, check out THIS article.

Just a few days ago, the Hungarian police of the Csongrád-Csanád county headquarters have published a seven-minute video from the viewpoint of the border guards.

Based on the video, also shared by Infostart, it is evident that the people want to illegally cross the border fence. One of the men is trying to use a ladder to bypass the fence.

When the officers arrive at the place of the attempted breach and try to neutralise the migrants with gas and pepper spray, one man uses his ladder as a weapon trying to hit the guards, while the other migrants continuously barrage the guards with branches, logs and even stones.

At the end of the video, the border guards show the object thrown at them, and within the items, there are even glass balls possibly shot from a slingshot.

However, Hirado.hu has found another video where the cameras show the attackers with some sort of pistol trying to threaten the officer at the other side of the fence.

Towards the end of the video, two other men are seen carrying an air rifle and showing evidence of even more glass balls that could be used as projectiles from a slingshot.

Hungary sends police units to protect Serbian, Macedonian border

Migration

Hungarian police will continue to help protect the borders of Europe by dispatching new contingents to North Macedonia and Serbia, the national police headquarters (ORFK) said on Tuesday.

A 29-member unit set off to North Macedonia and a 10-member contingent to southern neighbour Serbia at a ceremony in Budapest.

The police officers will be tasked with patrolling the two countries’ borders and helping to arrest people smugglers and illegal migrants. Some of the Hungarian officers will be posted in the inner parts of those countries to patrol roads, ORFK said.

The contingents will be equipped with vehicles, night vision equipment and mobile heat cameras.

Migrants are attacking the border more and more violently – VIDEO

Border Control Migration Fence

Migrants started to throw logs and twigs at the police at the Serbian–Hungarian border fence.

More and more violence

“Migrants are getting more and more violent,” writes the Hungarian Government’s Facebook page. The video can be found below.

Migrants started to throw logs and twigs at the police at the border, says mandiner.hu.

“Our border is under constant pressure,” György Bakondi, the prime minister’s chief security officer, said so on Saturday, after publishing the video of several young men attacking border guards.

Statements like “migrants are never aggressive” are simply not true, according to György Bakondi, and the videos clearly confirm that saying things like “I have never heard of a person who has been harmed” simply do not reflect the truth. According to Bakondi, “Our sons, who defend Hungary’s sovereignty, face this aggression every day.”

He says that the Hungarian government made the right decision in 2015 when they decided to resist the influx of migrants and prevented the entry of hundreds of thousands of immigrants. He added that more than 10.5 thousand illegal border crossings have been prevented just in the last year.

According to him, “it is very difficult to imagine that it is legal for these people to claim they are refugees, seek asylum, and, in the context of this, demonstrate such aggressive behaviour,” in order to be declared a refugee.

Two weeks ago, they saw armed migrants

“SHOCKING: Armed migrants on the Hungarian border!” – László Toroczkai, President of the Mi Hazánk Mozgalom (Our Country Movement), published a video with said title on his Facebook page. The video shows people climbing over a fence, one of them holding a rifle in his hand. According to Toroczkai, this video was made on the southern border at Ásotthalom where he is the mayor.

The local mayor tries to resist

“HUNTING ON THE BORDER AFTER THE ATTACKS” – Toroczkai showed and described in detail how the field guards work “during deployment”. They appear to be looking for traces of illegal migrants in the woods at night, armed, and the municipal surveillance camera system is also used for this purpose. It is claimed the field guards have been performing this task for years, and thousands of people have been captured.

The border fence on Fox News

We wrote only a few days ago that Tucker Carlson, a reporter of Fox News, travelled to Hungary to visit the fence on the Serbian–Hungarian border, and he also made a report on the ‘migrant situation’ there. Carlson learned that Hungary is not a rich country, not even the richest in the region, yet it managed to build a border fence at the southern border relatively quickly. Carlson presented a direct shot of the fence, mainly showing what is also reported daily by the government media. Carlson’s crew also shows the process of returning newly caught illegal migrants to Serbia.

Here is the article we wrote about Carlson’s visit:

Orban and Tucker

“The main hunting ground of George Soros is here,” Prime Minister Viktor Orbán told American TV host Tucker Carlson in a report made in Hungary last summer by FOX, which was finally published on Wednesday. He describes Hungary as a “serious and modern” country.

Introducing Hungary as a conservative state

Carlson begins the 25-minute report, which is intended primarily for American viewers, by locating Hungary geographically. Then they talk about Hungarian history, explaining some important moments of the country’s history to the viewers, hvg.hu writes.

Carlson says that he noticed that Hungary was completely different from other countries at first glance: as he said, you could run into government advertisements at the airport, and he also mentions conservative graffiti – while a “f*ck liberals” graffiti can be seen in the background. He describes Hungarians as proud people.

Orban also got a detailed presentation in the film in which the prime minister is portrayed as a serious politician who was first responsible for the Russians’ withdrawal from the country in 1989. It is also mentioned that Orbán studied at Oxford with the support of Soros, but then it is noted that they later became enemies.

Carlson went to the southern border of Hungary

Of course, the fence on the country’s southern border plays a major role in the film. Carlson learned that Hungary is not a rich country, not even the richest in the region, yet it managed to build a border fence at the southern border relatively quickly.

According to Carlson, Hungary has been punished for excluding refugees, but Orbán is ready to fight the European Union. Carlson presented a direct shot of the fence, mainly showing what is also reported daily by the government media. Carlson’s crew also shows the process of returning newly caught illegal migrants to Serbia. (There is also a mistake made by Carlson when he says that migrants are sent back to Slovakia, says Hvg.hu.)

We wrote several articles about the border situation already, here is one of the latest ones:

Family support

The film also features another well-known narrative of the government, from Katalin Novák: the former minister for families, now a presidential candidate, told Carlson that they wanted to curb population decline in Hungary not by importing children but by supporting families. Of course, Novák also reported on the generous support provided to families by the government, and the staff managed to find several families who would happily smile at the camera under Novák’s words. Finally, they also report on how good it is to live in Hungary thanks to the government.

Carlson also covered the 2022 parliamentary elections, which he described as a clash between Orbán and Soros, nationalism and globalism. In the film, Orbán also says that external forces are still interfering in the work of the Hungarian government.

Elections coming up

There will be parliamentary elections in Hungary in April 2022, here we wrote about the plans of the opposition:

Minister: Hungary will protect EU external borders!

hungary border fence migration
In terms of migration, solidarity among European Union member states means for Hungary also the need to protect the bloc’s external borders, Judit Varga, the justice minister, said after a meeting of the General Affairs Council in Brussels on Tuesday.

The protection of the EU Schengen area is a task that means protecting the external borders, she told Hungarian journalists. She noted Hungary’s contribution in performing the task by building a border fence and reiterated the government’s call for the EU to contribute financing.

Varga said Brussels’

migrant distribution quota was for Hungary “a red line not to be crossed”.

She reiterated Hungary’s position that a solution to the problem of migration had to be resolved where it emerged instead of importing it to Europe, adding that “migration must be stopped on the whole”.

The Moldovan human trafficker

The human trafficker, who brought illegal migrants from the southern border of Hungary to the border of Austria, was a 25-year-old Moldovan man, it seems to be confirmed that he received his order from the human-trafficking mafia. The 25-year-old man tried to break into Austria on Sunday, driving his car ignoring the signs of the soldiers, and then when he understood it would not work out, he got out of his car, started running towards Hungary, and shot twice at the Austrian soldiers, says magyarnemzet.hu. He was arrested by the Hungarian police in the border town of Körmend.

The court case has begun

The 25-year-old Moldovan man is suspected of human trafficking. The Austrian authorities are investigating the violent acts he committed against their officials. In accordance with the Unity Convention, the Austrians will most probably offer to start the case to the Hungarian judicial authorities, as the man was arrested on the Hungarian side.

The 25-year-old Moldovan, along with two compatriots – two men, aged 22 and 26 -, was arrested on January 19 in Körmend, driving an Audi with a Hungarian license plate. His companions were also arrested for helping with human trafficking. The 25-year-old man went to Austria on January 16 with his van crossing the Szentpéterfa / Monyorókerék (Eberau) border, with 12 illegal migrants and a Moldovan helper in his van. The Austrian soldiers tried to stop him, then he drove over the feet of one Austrian soldier. He still got stuck with his vehicle between the soldiers later, so he jumped out and ran back to Hungary while shooting at the Austrian soldiers twice. His accomplice and the illegal migrants were captured by the Austrians.

Criminal proceedings have been initiated in Austria against the shooter for violence against an official, which is expected to be handed over to the Hungarian authorities where they could be joined with human trafficking proceedings. The latter is normally punishable by one to five years’ imprisonment, but if the crime is stopped, and the violence against an official is punishable, it can be punishable by up to 15 years.

Vienna located smuggler mafia

The suspicion of a criminal organisation is already based on the fact that two of his accomplices, who were suspected of supporting the crime, assisted in human trafficking, but there are far more compelling arguments for the aggravating circumstance. According to some  information, the Moldovans smuggling in the Austro-Hungarian border area work for human trafficking gangs operating in Vienna, typically organised by Syrians, Afghans, Iraqis, Pakistanis, Turks, or Bangladeshi people, says origo.hu.

Joint actions of Austro-Hungarian team

The shooter was relatively easy to identify, his captured accomplice told the police who he was at the first request, and since he was on the Austrian records as he had a criminal past, a photo of him was also found just in a few minutes. The joint Austro-Hungarian investigation team in Nickeldorf is in constant contact regarding information about the human traffickers.

The situation in Serbia does not seem easy

According to information from the Hungarian police, Syrian, Afghan, and Turkish smugglers have established their control all over Serbia. These gangs have fought a bloody battle over the division of territory.
