Superstar Will Perform at Sziget Festival

A real popular artist – in Hungary and abroad – has been signed by the organizers of the festival in 2015. For the Day Minus One, Robbie Williams will be coming, who is one of today’s best-selling pop icons, hvg.hu says.

Most recently, Robbie Williams gave a concert in Budapest in April 2014, then he also could make the city crazy, so it is guaranteed that the August 10th Sziget concert will enthuse the Hungarian and the foreign fans too.

Attracting of Williams is also a big feat because the artist rarely gives festival concerts. However, his You Let Me Entartain European tour will also reach the Obuda Island (which is the location of Sziget Festival).

According to hvg.hu, during his career, Robbie Williams published 11 albums and he won 17 Brit Awards among others. In 2006 – still a record – ha could sell 1.6 million tickets in just one day, but his name is also linked to the largest open-air concert: a total of 375 000 visitors saw him during three nights in Knebsworth.

Karoly Gerendai, Managing Director of Sziget Festival Ltd. said a total of 25.000 daily tickets were issued for Day One Minus. The first 10.000 units are available at discounted prices for HUF 18.000. After that, tickets for this day will cost 20.000 Forints, subject to availability. The weekly tickets will be, of course, valid for this day too. Tickets can be purchased from midday of February 2.

When Williams was in Budapest with his swing show last time, he pleased the fans with the 20 students of the Rakosliget primary school of music, with whom he sang the old song of Frank Sinatra, the High Hopes, hvg.hu said.

Other important performers were also announced by the organizers of Sziget earlier, so it is sure that in addition to Robbie Williams, Florence & The Machine, Jamie Woon, José Gonzáles and the alt-J will also perform at the festival.

The first news of Sziget 2015 have arrived. Although, among the names only Florence and the Machine is prime time, the list clearly shows that the festival will be exciting and diverse next year, too.

Day 0 awaits visitors with full-fledged concerts – just like last year. Here performs Florence and the Machine, which has been one of the most desired bands for years. The 28-year-old Florence Welch already enjoys a career that only happens to the best ones. There is also a fantastic band behind the extraordinary talent, which has an essential part in the great shows. Their repertoire is an amazing combination of indie pop, baroque, and soul. Their first album was at the top of the charts, and the second repeated the success of the debut. The MTV-, Q-, and Brit Awards-winning, and Grammy-nominee Florence is preparing for a big time in 2015, and the Sziget will certainly be one of the most important sites for this.

With their unquestionably original, light hearted, yet in-depth works, alt-J is becoming more and more popular in Hungary as well. With their debut album (”An Awesome Wave”) they have won the professionally two most prestigious British recognitions, the Mercury Prize and the Ivor Novello Awards.

Blasterjaxx made up of two young and ambitious Dutch DJs, Thom Jongkind and Idir Makhlaf. Energetic, modern and large-scale: they use the most effective elements of electro, big room, and progressive house. They have integrated into the international EDM Network in the past two years, where they earned a serious reputation, thanks to which they are in connection with the bests of the professions, and are regularly invited to the biggest parties. In 2013, they debuted in DJ Mag’s prestige list, ranking the world’s best DJs.

AWOLNATION plays rock, spiced with hot and massive electronic elements. So far, they have had one successful album, Megalithic Symphony. From that, the emblematic record ”Sail” was included in the Billboard list of rock songs. Apart from a lot of new songs, this one will also be heard in the summer of 2015.

A sexy and sophisticated singer-songwriter who combines electronic music with soul in a stylish and appealing way. He is Jamie Woon, whose first success was ”Mirrorwriting” in 2011, after which, the industry declared him the most talented British performer of his generation. It will not be his first time is Budapest: a few years ago, he had a concert, and he also shot the video clip to ”Lady Lucky” here.

Fauve is a French group, made up of five musicians, producers and graphic artists. Their works are demanding and reveal a unique attitude, whether it is about music, video clip or appearance. In addition, they are also successful: their first album (released in February, 2014) reached the third rank on the French record sales list.

José Gonzalez is an Argentine-born Swedish musician, songwriter and singer, who is able to charm and engage the audience with only a guitar in his hands. So far, he has had two albums. His second album won the prestigious European Border Breakers Award; that is, he is also successful in other European countries. He is planning to release his third album.

The British indie rock band, The Subways return to us, to prove why the audience of the biggest British and European festivals adore their energetic performance. Currently, they are working on the fourth album, which ensures that their concert will include new songs as well.

The world-famous Babylon Circus ska-punk-reggae-swing-jazz band will also perform on Day 0. They have bee non the track for almost two decades, they had more than a thousand concerts, and they are familiar to the audience of all the major international festivals. They last visited Hungary in 2013, with their album ”Never Stop”.

Sziget Festival Sets New Record With over 410,000 Visitors – Photo Gallery

Budapest, August 18 (MTI) – The week-long Sziget Festival in northern Budapest’s Obuda Island attracted record many visitors this year and even though final figures are not yet available, they are estimated to be between 410,000 and 420,000, main organiser Karoly Gerendai said late on Sunday.

The previous weekly record was 390,000, set in 2009, he added. The all-time daily record of 85,000 people was set on Thursday this week when the event was sold out, Gerendai said.

He said he expected this year’s Sziget to be in the black despite a 300 million forint increase in expenses. Gerendai said it proved to be a good decision to postpone the Sziget by one week compared to previous years and the plan for next year is to again hold it in mid-August. This will change only if other European festivals also change their usual dates, he added.

More than 80 percent of the weekly passes were sold in Western Europe but the number of Hungarians was nearly 50 percent among day-ticket holders this year, Gerendai said.

“More Hungarians visited the Sziget this year than last year, which had not happened for a long time,” Gerendai said.

The highest number of foreign visitors came from Holland. Significant increase was registered in the British, French, German and Italian markets.

Flirting And Sneaking into Sziget Festival – Movie Trailer (VIDEO)

According to szigetofficial on Youtube, this movie is all about your first experience at Sziget Festival, you will learn how to get in free, but you will also learn how NOT to make friends.

A film that brings back memories of light-hearted teenage days in which self-doubt was always waiting to pounce. The film tells the story of two girls’ day at Sziget. Betti (Luca Pusztai) and ‘V’ (Agnes Barta) sneak into the festival without money and then they attract the boys’ attention. The girls are outwardly similar, but inwardly-just like the movie actresses- they are completely different, szeretlekmagyarorszag.hu said.

A fast-paced coming-of-age drama set in Budapest, Sziget Festival by Yvonne Kerekgyarto. As a matter of fact, it is like a first movie of The Island of Freedom, Sziget Festival. „A refreshing, humble and heartfelt coming-of-age tale set in a place that is part of everyone’s teenage years, a music festival, where the small things of life dance to the rhythm of music, and where the vision of the young filmmaker makes it through many difficulties to get somewhere special”, eng.cinemacity.org reports.

The film has become a wild success in the seventh Cinema City international film festival, which took place June 21-28 in Novi Sad, Serbia.

Sziget Tickets Selling With Record Speed

Szigetfestival.com said, all Siesta Camping tickets have been sold for this year’s Sziget Festival, which means that the upgraded campsites of the event are sold-out. Normal festival passes with camping possibilities are still available, but these are also selling with record speed and already passed the 80% marker. Those who are planning to visit the Island of Freedom in August, but still haven’t bought their tickets, definitely need to hurry up.

More than 80% of the Sziget festival passes have been sold, meaning that this year’s event is on course to attract a record number of audience. There’s even a strong chance that for the first time in the history of this giant event, festival passes will actually become sold-out.

„We’ve already sold more passes than last year all together, although there are still 6 weeks left till Sziget” – said Karoly Gerendai, Sziget’s main organizer. „We think this comes from multiple reasons, partly from all the new visual developments we introduced recently and of course also due to the strong line-up we managed to book this year. We were slightly scared to move the festival a week later compared to the last few years, but now it’s clear that it was a good decision. If we keep up the current speed of ticket sales it’s easily possible that passes will sell out this year” – Gerendai added.

pic6

The other important news is that all the upgraded international campsites are full for this year’s event. These include the VIP, the Alternativa, the Apéro and the newly introduced Siesta camping as well. Of course normal camping spots – available for all Weekly Pass holders – are still available.

Also the Sziget Home wooden houses and pre-settled caravans are sold-out, but if you’re looking for a special accommodation on site, you can still find some rooms at the Flexotel facility. If you’re travelling with a caravan or a camper, you can buy your ticket for the Caravan Camping, while the Family Camping (designed for families arriving with little kids) and the special camping for guests with disabilities are also still available.

Sziget 2014 – Organisers Eye Record Attendance

(MTI) – The Sziget Festival has a good chance of bringing past years’ downward trends to a halt and setting new attendance records, the head of the company running the event told Thursday’s business daily Vilaggazdasag.

Organisers have already sold more weekly passes for this year’s festival than during the whole of last year’s event, Karoly Gerendai said.

Business has shot up in Britain, Germany, France and Italy, showing a 100 percent increase, he said. Hungarian ticket sales are showing signs of a similar surge, and the event is likely to break previous attendance records if day tickets also sell well, he said.

Last year Sziget only managed to attract 362,000 visitors, the lowest attendance figure over the last decade.

Gerendai said the costs of bringing a band to Hungary are higher every single year.

“A band’s asking price could even exceed the previous year’s price by 30 percent. Competition among festivals is also a factor that continues to drive up costs, but we simply can’t raise ticket prices by the same margin,” Gerendai said.

He is also hoping that Sziget will finally be able to pay off its 400 million forint (EUR 1.3m) loan early. Gerendai and his business partners regained ownership of Sziget in autumn 2012.

Sziget 2014 Festival Timed To Avoid Overlaps

(MTI) – The Sziget 2014 festival will be held between August 11 and 18 in order to avoid overlaps with other international festivals, the chief organiser said on Monday.

By holding the event a week later than in recent years, Sziget 2014 will not overlap with festivals in Japan and America, and more international stars can be invited to play in Budapest, Karoly Gerendai said. Advance ticket sales have already proven the decision right, he added.

The Sziget 2014 line-up will include The Prodigy, Lily Allen, Bonobo, Skrillex, Die Fantastischen Vier, Brody Dalle, Bastille, Calvin Harris, Outkast, Manic Street Preachers, and The 1975.

Gerendai said that in addition to a good line-up, Sziget offers special services and circumstances that make the event unique.

“The festival has become Hungary’s number one tourism attraction, drawing twice as many people as for instance the Formula One race. We can utilise the fact that Budapest is getting increasingly popular among young adults,” he said.

He added that several new festival venues are planned, with increased emphasis on community areas and activities. Last year’s popular Sziget Beach will reopen and a new stage will be dedicated to street musicians playing the best songs of rock history, also to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the Woodstock Festival. The 25th anniversary of the collapse of the Berlin wall will be remembered with a 100-metre wall to be decorated by street artists and all festival visitors.

A giant Rubik cube will be built to celebrate the 70th birth anniversary of its creator Erno Rubik and it will house an interactive exhibition about the cube’s global success.

The Sziget Eye giant Ferris wheel will be once again set up in central Budapest’s Erzsebet Square throughout the summer and a smaller version will operate at the festival site.

Sziget Anthem 2014 is released now – Listen HERE

The song called Together by Ivan & The Parazol was chosen for the official Sziget Festival Anthem in 2014 – the organizers announced.

“Besides that our international performers and their songs are widely known, we are deliberately choosing Hungarian songs for the Sziget Anthem each year. The one-week-long summer festival will be held at the Budapest Shipyard Island and the current anthem is the major tool of advertising for the festival worldwide. This year the selected song is the latest single of the new album – called Mode Bizarre – of the Ivan & The Parazol. The song takes an important part both in the Hungarian and in the international Sziget campaign” – announced Károly Gerendai, the founder of the Sziget Festival in the official notice. Well, this is a great chance for the bands to be widely known.

Last year’s winner was a song of the Punnany Massif called “Szabadon”. According to Károly Gerendai, the song of this year also goes well with the Liberty Island message and fits into the Sziget atmosphere. “It is unbelievable and an uplifting experience that our song can be the anthem of a prestigious festival like this one in 2014! Moreover, lots of memories, adventure and amazing parties and concerts are connected to this famous festival.” – reported Iván Vitáris, the lead singer of the rock’n’roll band.

Iván Vitáris also added that The Sziget Festival enhances the fame of Budapest and Hungary as well, thus the music of the Iván & The Parazol will also be recognized by so many people. The rock and roll band hopes to sing the festival Anthem along with many others during the festival performances.

The Hungarian rock ‘n’ roll band was founded 4 years ago and they released their second studio album called Mode Bizarre at the end of March. After performing before Deep Purple in the László Papp Budapest Sports Arena this February their song as a festival anthem is another great opportunity to become popular not only in their homeland but also in other countries.

Sziget organizers will not only spread the current song around the world but also seek ways to support the career of the band through their business relations. However, the next step is to prepare a music video – as an advertisement – both for the band and the Sziget Festival which now only has a 30-second trailer of the anthem.

Sziget 2014: The first names have arrived!

The Sziget crew is happy to announce the first names confirmed for the music program of this year’s ’Island of Freedom’. Queens of the Stone Age, Calvin Harris, Placebo and many more will definitely be at Óbudai Island in the heart of Budapest this summer.

Sziget.hu website said, in 2014 the ’Island of Freedom’ will take place one week later than previously. Károly Gerendai, founder and main organizer of Sziget Festival, said: „It seems like a good decision that we put the date of Sziget one week later, because now we can announce better names compared to this time last year. To put it simple there is a better chance that bands are on a European tour at this part of the month.”

Sziget Festival was once again shortlisted amongst the top ten major European festivals this year at the European Festival Awards. As always, the music line-up will feature acts from various genres, while stars and smaller, but super exciting acts will both be presented at the stages of the event, Sziget.hu says.
