The US ambassador harshly attacked the Hungarian government

david pressman us ambassador

The US ambassador to Budapest has attacked the Hungarian government, criticising Fidesz’s pro-Russia stance.

US ambassador’s criticism

On Wednesday, 7 June, a reception was held to celebrate the US-Hungarian scientific cooperation and to celebrate the Space Treaty between the two countries. The event included a speech by the US Ambassador to Budapest.

“I must begin tonight by mentioning the catastrophic events unfolding in Ukraine as the people of that country continue to struggle with Russia’s war against a country with which Hungary stubbornly maintains and even strengthens its ‘interconnectedness’,” the Ambassador said.

The ambassador then explained that while Hungary is making friends with Moscow, tens of thousands of people are forced to leave their homes in Ukraine because the Russians have destroyed the reservoir in Nova Kahovka.

“A few things are clear: Russia started this war, Russia was the one who occupied this territory of Ukraine, and the dam was under the control of Russia,” portfolio.hu quotes the ambassador as saying.

“Worlds separate us from the Hungarian government”

David Pressman then turned to space exploration. “At this desperate moment, when it may seem that worlds separate us from the Hungarian government, there is another space where the United States and Hungary are making significant progress together”.

Pressman has previously criticised the Hungarian government. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán jokingly used the ambassador’s name to say that Pressman wanted to put pressure on the Hungarian government’s policies, index.hu quoted him as saying.

Pressman also pointed out in his speech that the scientific importance of the Earth Observation programme is growing. Weather forecasting, crop forecasting, natural resource management and natural disasters are of paramount importance. “According to a recent study, Hungary lost 3 percent of its GDP last year due to crop failure caused by extreme droughts. The agricultural systems of the Carpathian Basin and the Balkans are among the most vulnerable to climate change in Europe as a whole,” said Pressman.

Almost 30 °C, summer arrives in Hungary this weekend

Summer Hungary Balaton

Yesterday was already partly sunny in many regions of Hungary, but the summer season will kick off today with peak degrees between 24 and 28.

According to index.hu, we can enjoy a lot of sunshine this weekend. Of course, there can be showers in the Eastern counties, but the weather will be perfect for late spring and summer activities. At night, the temperature will not fall below 7 and 14 Celsius degrees. Meanwhile, the peaks will be around 25.

The Hungarian Meteorological Services issued a yellow warning to four Eastern counties because of possible thunderstorms and hails. Sun will rule on Sunday, as well. The peaks will be between 24 and 29 °C.

However, Blikk reminded UV-B radiation will be extremely high on Saturday, the index will exceed 7. Therefore, we should avoid being exposed to the Sun between 11 AM and 3 PM. Even 15-20 minutes can result in skin redness.

Here is when summer will arrive to Hungary

Indian summer Hungary

In the coming days, rain and heavy precipitation are expected across the country. Showers and thunderstorms are expected until Thursday. However, on Friday, this will change radically.

Last Thursday, the weather phenomenon that can produce the highest amount of rainfall this time of year arrived in Hungary, 24.hu reports. It is a shallow cyclone, which has delivered and continues to deliver rain in several waves.

“In the next few days, it will rain everywhere again, with the heaviest rainfall expected in the western part of Transdanubia,” meteorologist László Molnár, an expert at Kiderül.hu, told 24.hu.

This means that in the next few days, we can expect 10-20 mm of rain across the country, even 20-40 mm in the Western Transdanubian region. This will take the form of heavy, but quiet rain on Tuesday and showers and thunderstorms on Wednesday and Thursday. On Friday, 19 May, we will see a radical change in weather.

Only scattered precipitation is likely in the last days of the week. From Monday, the usual warm May weather with showers and thunderstorms will set in. It will stay between 17-22 degrees at the warmest until the weekend.

From Saturday, summer will arrive, with highs of 22-27 degrees.

According to the longer-term forecast of agronaptár.hu, the warmer, drier weather will only turn to rainfall again around 6-8 June.

Get ready: Hungary’s weather takes a turn, and not a positive one

On Friday, the sky will be mostly cloudy or overcast, with a higher chance of scattered clouds in the south and southwest. This may cause the sun to shine for longer or shorter periods, the National Meteorological Service reports.

Behind the breaking, weakening precipitation zone, several waves of showers and thunderstorms, mainly accompanied by downpours, will arrive from the south. Northeastern areas will see the least chance of precipitation.

East, south-easterly winds will become stronger in several places, Index reports. Daytime highs will generally be between 12 and 17 degrees Celsius, with slightly warmer in the south and southwest.

Saturday

On Saturday, clouds will break up and decrease from the southwest during the day. In the afternoon, more clouds will arrive from the southwest. Scattered showers and occasional thunderstorms are possible. The wind will be strong from the east and southeast.

Temperatures will be between 7 and 12 degrees at dawn and 13 to 20 degrees in the afternoon.

Sunday

On Sunday, skies will be mostly cloudy or overcast. However, there may be some thin cloud cover in the northeast at first, with filtered sunshine likely. Rain, showers and thunderstorms are expected in the southwest and west.

It will be almost summer today in Hungary, but rain will return

balaton_sound_beach_fun

Did you plan a trip for the weekend? Today will be perfect for an excursion because it will be almost summer. But tomorrow, rain will return and rule the weather for the next few days.

Today, the daily maximums will reach 20-24 degrees in Hungary, and even in the evening, the temperature will not go lower than 9-15 degrees. There will be cumulus clouds in the Southern regions of the country. Veil clouds will rule the Western parts of Hungary and get thick in Transdanubia. Winds will only be strong in the area of Lake Fertő, blikk.hu wrote. There will be showers in Győr-Moson-Sopron, Vas, Veszprém, and Zala counties. Even thunderbolts, strong winds and blizzards may take place in these Western counties. Here is a temperature map for today:

On Monday, the sky will be cloudy, and there will be precipitation in many parts of the country. The daily maximum will be “only” between 13-19 degrees. That will continue on Tuesday, but the temperature will not decrease, temperature will be around 10-13 degrees in the Northeast and 14-19 degrees in other parts of the country. Wednesday will be drier and sunnier. Showers may occur, but the temperature will be between 11-17 degrees. Thursday will also follow that pattern with small showers and cumulus clouds, IdÅ‘kép wrote.

PHOTOS, VIDEO: Half of Hungary covered by snow, here is what to expect at Easter

Hungary weather snow

Hungary is not a big country, but yesterday it seceded into two parts considering weather and temperature. Winter has come back in April, which is not exceptional, but now it seems it will linger longer than expected and bring low temperatures. Thus, we should find our coats, scarves and hats again.

Snow arrived in Hungary

According to Blikk, on Thursday, the snow layer was 10 centimetres in many places in the country.

Here is where you can find snow in Hungary currently:

And that thickness may double in the next couple of days. The Hungarian Meteorological Services warns us to expect a lot of precipitation and a maximum temperature reaching only 10 degrees. The slow warmup will start only on Sunday, and when Hungarian men and boys begin the traditional sprinkling on Monday, they should expect sunshine for some hours and temperatures between 12-17 °C.

Időkép wrote that the temperature contrast between West and East Hungary was significant yesterday. In the West, it was 10-12 degrees, while in the East, it was 0-2. Not surprisingly, Northeast Hungary was covered by snow. Nyíregyháza, a city of almost 150 thousand inhabitants, saw more snow than during the winter. Here are some photos made in the Northeastern regions from Baktalórántháza, Tiszacsernyő, Záhony, and Sátoraljaújhely:

Időkép says that the snowfall will remain with us even during Good Friday. At night, the temperature decreased everywhere to below 0 degrees. In Zabar, thermometers measured -7.6 °C. Here is a map of what to expect today:

Happy Easter or happy Christmas

Index.hu writes that in some places in the Zempléni mountains, the thickness of the snow layer may exceed even 15 centimetres. The Hungarian Meteorological Services issued a warning for three counties because of heavy snowfall: Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg, Hajdú-Bihar, and Borsod, where 5-10 centimetres of snow will fall. In the Bükk and Mátra, the layer will “only” be 3-7 centimetres.

Snow is falling heavily, it even caused an accident on the M3 motorway in Hungary. Make sure to check the road conditions before leaving home!

An extensive block of precipitation reached the northeastern part of the country, resulting in snowfall northeast of the Debrecen-Tiszaújváros line.

We reported yesterday that motorists should be careful when on the road, as heavy snowfall is expected on Thursday and Friday. The snow really did arrive and it was not kind.

In snowy weather on the M3 motorway in the Nyíregyháza area, a car crashed into a barrier. The inner lane was closed at km 217 on the side towards Vásárosnamény, Infostart reports.

“Snow is falling in the area, so please drive according to winter road conditions,” Útinform warns.

The National Meteorological Service (OMSZ) confirmed on Facebook that snowfall and sleet are expected in several waves with varying intensity in the northeast of the country until Friday evening.

From late afternoon on Thursday, precipitation may turn to snow in the Bükk and Mátra regions, and a layer of snow up to centimetres thick may form. It has been warned that strong northerly and northeasterly winds may carry snow in the Bodrogköz and Szabolcs during the day on Thursday.

Heavy snowfall is mainly expected in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén, Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg and Hajdú-Bihar counties in the coming days. More than 5 centimetres of fresh snow may fall in the lowland areas of the three counties. However, in the Zemplén Hills, it may be double that.

Hungarian Public Roads (Magyar Közút) is preparing in advance for snow clearing and de-slippage works. Still, motorists are being asked to be more vigilant as most of them have already changed their winter tyres.

Wintery weather returns to Hungary next week

Budapest Buda Castle Palace winter snow

Based on the latest weather forecasts, today will be the weather we are used to in April. But next week, an Arctic front will reach the Carpathian Basin bringing back winter.

According to infostart.hu, on Monday, we should expect 1-7 degrees in the morning. The weather will warm to 13-17 degrees during the day. But after that, clouds and strong, Northern winds will arrive. On Tuesday, the maximum will be only around 10 °C again.

The Hungarian Meteorological Service (OMSZ) wrote there was a cyclone above Italy named Ilina. That will drag Northern, cold air masses from the Arctic to the Carpathian Basin. Based on current calculations, it will not only bring cold but also precipitation in Hungary. As a result, in some places, even snowfall cannot be excluded next week on Tuesday or Wednesday. The OMSZ did not write quantities and added that the cyclone’s track could easily change.

However, it is sure that everybody should prepare for weather colder than average. For example, on Tuesday afternoon, Budapest’s temperature will be 10 degrees below the season average. Night frosts may return, but a lot depends on the track of the cold air masses. Anyway, after some days when the temperature was quite warm, you should prepare a coat, even a hat for tomorrow and the first segment of next week.

The text in the first photo means: “considerable negative anomaly”. That is what we should expect between next Tuesday and Saturday.

Severe weather coming in Hungary: Warning issued for several counties for Friday

storm

Friday morning was cloudy and sunny, with increasing and thickening clouds from the northwest in the late morning. Most places will become cloudy in the afternoon. A warning has been issued for several counties because of thunderstorms, lightning, hail.

Friday afternoon temperatures will be between 16 and 21 degrees Celsius. However, after showers and thunderstorms, it could suddenly get several degrees cooler, Index reports.

The National Meteorological Service (Országos Meteorológiai Szolgálat, OMSZ) has issued a first-level, lemon-yellow warning for thunderstorms in eight counties for Friday. Lightning is the primary threat, with occasional winds and hail possible in the following counties:

  • Békés
  • Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén
  • Csongrád-Csanád
  • Hajdú-Bihar
  • Heves
  • Nógrád
  • Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg
  • Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok

According to the medical-meteorological forecast, the first half of the day on Friday will have a double frontal effect. This may cause headaches, migraines, circulatory problems, heart problems, blood pressure fluctuations, dizziness and even nausea.

Windy weather may increase headache symptoms, irritability and restlessness. We may feel more tired, unfocused and impatient, Index warns.

Winter comes back to Hungary with -10 °C and sleet!

snowfall budapest rizsavi3

Astronomical spring began on 20 March and we even changed our clock to daylight saving time today. But it seems winter returns for a couple of days, even at the end of March. Details below.

According to index.hu, Monday will be cloudy, and in the Northeast, rains will rule the weather. There, we may even expect sleet. The Hungarian Meteorological Services issued warnings because of strong winds and showers in many parts of Hungary. Daily highs will be around 6 and 13 degrees.

Expected wind speed on Monday:

On Tuesday, we should expect showers, sleet and snowstorms with gusty winds. The lowest temperature during the night will be around -5 °C. But that can go lower than even -9 degrees in the wind-protected areas. Maximums will be between 5 and 10 degrees.

On Wednesday, clouds will remain, but the amount of precipitation will decrease significantly. Western and northwestern winds will get strong in many places. At dawn, we should expect temperatures between -7 and +2 degrees. In the wind-protected northeastern valleys, there can be even -10 °C. Daily highs will be between 10 and 18 degrees.

Budapest this evening:

That trend will rule Thursday, but the temperature will increase a couple of degrees, just like on Friday, when there will be no frost at night. Clouds will remain, and there will be showers with strong winds. To sum up, the week will be windy, and wet and freezing at night. But the days will be lukewarm. Thus, the daily temperature variation will be high.

That weather will rule the weekend. Clouds, showers sometimes and gusty winds, but the temperature will continue to rise and reach almost 20 degrees in some places.

Warning: frost and snow returns to Hungary

Budapest Buda Castle Palace winter snow

The National Meteorological Service (OMSZ) is again warning of gusty winds and dust storms. Időkép added that frost and snow would return next week in Hungary. Be careful out there!

The meteorological service said on its Facebook page on Friday that strong gale-force winds are again expected over a large area in Hungary. After the precipitation has passed, the strongest wind gusts are expected, especially in the northern part of the Transdanubian region.

They added that on Monday, a gradual increase in winds is expected from the morning hours until mid-morning. By early afternoon, the northwest wind will reach its maximum, Index writes.

Gale-force winds of more than 60 km/h are likely over large areas, but gusts of 70-80 km/h should be expected even in flat areas. Higher wind speeds should be expected in mountainous areas, where gusts of up to 90-100 km/h may be expected.

From the evening hours, winds will moderate slightly, but will still be strong over a large area. Winds are expected to ease on Tuesday, but strong gusty winds can still be expected. However, Tuesday dawn will be freezing in most parts of Hungary, Időkép said. In areas protected from winds, the temperature may go below -5 degrees. Peaks will be around 4-10 °C. Wednesday will be frosty in Hungary, and even snowstorms and snowy rains may occur. Western winds will remain strong. But, in the afternoon, we should expect 6-15 degrees.

They warned that although the winds will be preceded by precipitation, there may be areas where there is little or no precipitation, so localised dust storms may develop again. For this reason, drivers are asked to always drive according to traffic, weather and visibility conditions!

But in the hottest areas, especially in the western part of the Kisalföld (Little Plain) and around Sopron, we could see temperatures of 25 degrees Celsius That is already a summer day in meteorological terms! On Friday afternoon, however, a cold front approaching from the west will bring thicker frontal clouds. Increasing showers will be possible.

Saturday will be cloudy or overcast with increasing clouds in the second half of the day. Rain and showers are likely in the south and east of the country, with strong gusts of wind in other areas. Temperatures will range from 6-11 degrees at dawn to 13-20 degrees in the afternoon.

On Sunday, we can expect light clouds, with several hours of sunshine in general, Telex reports. Then, increasing and thickening clouds from the west can be expected in the second half of the day. Colder weather is coming in Hungary, it may even snow on March 15

March 15 Hungary National flag hoisted hussar

The weather will fluctuate a lot during the week, and it can turn quite extreme on the Hungarian national holiday. With the arrival of the colder temperatures, even snow fall is possible on 15 March.

Fluctuating weather in the first half of the week

On the first day of the week ahead, the sky will be mostly overcast. There will be places where only veil clouds will be able to filter the sunlight, but some landscapes will see thicker clouds entirely covering the sun. Significant precipitation is not expected anywhere, only occasional drizzle and light rain may occur, writes idokep.hu.

In the morning, the temperature can be between -3 and +5 during the day it can be between 10 and 18 degrees. In the east and northeast of Hungary, lower maximums will be measured.

Cold weather is coming

On Tuesday, as a result of a fluctuating frontal system, rain and showers may develop in many parts of Transdanubia, reports Index. In some regions, there is a chance of a few hours of sunshine, while the south-southwest wind can be accompanied by lively, strong gusts. In the evening and at night, the wind can take a turn more to the west and northwest. The dawn will be milder, and the thermometers may show 12-21 degrees in the warmest hours.

What to expect on 15 March?

On the Hungarian national holiday, 15 March, the weather will be cloudy and gloomy in most of the country. However, in the western regions, the clouds may break up and the sun may shine in the afternoon hours. Precipitation is likely mainly in the central regions, the Great Hungarian Plain and the Northern Central Mountains, which may come mainly in the form of rain, but in some places it may also temporarily snow.

Due to the incoming cold front, the wind turning to the north and northwest may be accompanied by strong gusts. Frost is not expected anywhere in the morning, but only 2-10 degrees is projected in the afternoon. In certain parts of the country, primarily east of the Danube, the afternoon can be colder than the morning.

The weather on Thursday will be sunny

On Thursday, we can expect a great deal of sunshine. There may rain in some parts of Hungary, but all in all, we can leave our umbrellas at home. It can still freeze in several places in the morning, and the maximum temperature can be between 6 and 12 degrees during the day.

budapest bad weather

On Wednesday, the weather will be mainly cloudy. Thunderstorms may occur in some places in addition to gusty wind. However, in the next few days, the weather is expected to warm up significantly, before another cold front would arrive at the end of the week in our country, Időkép reports.

In addition to the warmer weather, showers may continue to develop scattered over the next few days. Some gusts may accompany the west-southwest winds. On Thursday and Friday, however, temperatures could reach up to 20 degrees Celsius following mild early morning weather, according to Időkép.

However, the warmer weather will not be around for long. A cold front will arrive on Saturday, which may bring a west-northwest wind and showers.
