Wintery weather returns to Hungary next week

Budapest Buda Castle Palace winter snow

Based on the latest weather forecasts, today will be the weather we are used to in April. But next week, an Arctic front will reach the Carpathian Basin bringing back winter.

According to infostart.hu, on Monday, we should expect 1-7 degrees in the morning. The weather will warm to 13-17 degrees during the day. But after that, clouds and strong, Northern winds will arrive. On Tuesday, the maximum will be only around 10 °C again.

The Hungarian Meteorological Service (OMSZ) wrote there was a cyclone above Italy named Ilina. That will drag Northern, cold air masses from the Arctic to the Carpathian Basin. Based on current calculations, it will not only bring cold but also precipitation in Hungary. As a result, in some places, even snowfall cannot be excluded next week on Tuesday or Wednesday. The OMSZ did not write quantities and added that the cyclone’s track could easily change.

However, it is sure that everybody should prepare for weather colder than average. For example, on Tuesday afternoon, Budapest’s temperature will be 10 degrees below the season average. Night frosts may return, but a lot depends on the track of the cold air masses. Anyway, after some days when the temperature was quite warm, you should prepare a coat, even a hat for tomorrow and the first segment of next week.

The text in the first photo means: “considerable negative anomaly”. That is what we should expect between next Tuesday and Saturday.

Hungary storm forecast meteorological service

Gale-force winds blowing across Hungary have brought down trees, broken tree branches and damaged power lines in numerous parts of the country, the national disaster management authority (OKF) said on Monday.

Most storm-related incidents were recorded in the western part of the country and Budapest, causing disruptions in rail traffic, the OKF said.

Power cables were damaged in Sopron, in north-west Hungary, after a tree fell on a residential building.

Uprooted trees are also blocking traffic on several major roads. In Somogy County, in the south-west, the winds brought down a tree onto the rail tracks.

Firefighters are constantly responding to calls for help concerning damage caused by the winds.

The National Meteorological Service has issued a second-degree alert for eight of Hungary’s 19 counties, forecasting storm-force winds.

A speed limit was imposed on the Kőröshegyi viaduct. In Fonyód, there was a gust of 117 km/h, trees were being uprooted:

Winter comes back to Hungary with -10 °C and sleet!

snowfall budapest rizsavi3

Astronomical spring began on 20 March and we even changed our clock to daylight saving time today. But it seems winter returns for a couple of days, even at the end of March. Details below.

According to index.hu, Monday will be cloudy, and in the Northeast, rains will rule the weather. There, we may even expect sleet. The Hungarian Meteorological Services issued warnings because of strong winds and showers in many parts of Hungary. Daily highs will be around 6 and 13 degrees.

Expected wind speed on Monday:

On Tuesday, we should expect showers, sleet and snowstorms with gusty winds. The lowest temperature during the night will be around -5 °C. But that can go lower than even -9 degrees in the wind-protected areas. Maximums will be between 5 and 10 degrees.

On Wednesday, clouds will remain, but the amount of precipitation will decrease significantly. Western and northwestern winds will get strong in many places. At dawn, we should expect temperatures between -7 and +2 degrees. In the wind-protected northeastern valleys, there can be even -10 °C. Daily highs will be between 10 and 18 degrees.

Budapest this evening:

That trend will rule Thursday, but the temperature will increase a couple of degrees, just like on Friday, when there will be no frost at night. Clouds will remain, and there will be showers with strong winds. To sum up, the week will be windy, and wet and freezing at night. But the days will be lukewarm. Thus, the daily temperature variation will be high.

That weather will rule the weekend. Clouds, showers sometimes and gusty winds, but the temperature will continue to rise and reach almost 20 degrees in some places.

Warning: frost and snow returns to Hungary

Budapest Buda Castle Palace winter snow

The National Meteorological Service (OMSZ) is again warning of gusty winds and dust storms. Időkép added that frost and snow would return next week in Hungary. Be careful out there!

The meteorological service said on its Facebook page on Friday that strong gale-force winds are again expected over a large area in Hungary. After the precipitation has passed, the strongest wind gusts are expected, especially in the northern part of the Transdanubian region.

They added that on Monday, a gradual increase in winds is expected from the morning hours until mid-morning. By early afternoon, the northwest wind will reach its maximum, Index writes.

Gale-force winds of more than 60 km/h are likely over large areas, but gusts of 70-80 km/h should be expected even in flat areas. Higher wind speeds should be expected in mountainous areas, where gusts of up to 90-100 km/h may be expected.

From the evening hours, winds will moderate slightly, but will still be strong over a large area. Winds are expected to ease on Tuesday, but strong gusty winds can still be expected. However, Tuesday dawn will be freezing in most parts of Hungary, Időkép said. In areas protected from winds, the temperature may go below -5 degrees. Peaks will be around 4-10 °C. Wednesday will be frosty in Hungary, and even snowstorms and snowy rains may occur. Western winds will remain strong. But, in the afternoon, we should expect 6-15 degrees.

They warned that although the winds will be preceded by precipitation, there may be areas where there is little or no precipitation, so localised dust storms may develop again. For this reason, drivers are asked to always drive according to traffic, weather and visibility conditions!

On Friday afternoon, however, a cold front approaching from the west will bring thicker frontal clouds. Increasing showers will be possible.

Saturday will be cloudy or overcast with increasing clouds in the second half of the day. Rain and showers are likely in the south and east of the country, with strong gusts of wind in other areas. Temperatures will range from 6-11 degrees at dawn to 13-20 degrees in the afternoon.

Colder weather is coming in Hungary, it may even snow on March 15

March 15 Hungary National flag hoisted hussar

The weather will fluctuate a lot during the week, and it can turn quite extreme on the Hungarian national holiday. With the arrival of the colder temperatures, even snow fall is possible on 15 March.

Fluctuating weather in the first half of the week

On the first day of the week ahead, the sky will be mostly overcast. There will be places where only veil clouds will be able to filter the sunlight, but some landscapes will see thicker clouds entirely covering the sun. Significant precipitation is not expected anywhere, only occasional drizzle and light rain may occur, writes idokep.hu.

In the morning, the temperature can be between -3 and +5 during the day it can be between 10 and 18 degrees. In the east and northeast of Hungary, lower maximums will be measured.

Cold weather is coming

On Tuesday, as a result of a fluctuating frontal system, rain and showers may develop in many parts of Transdanubia, reports Index. In some regions, there is a chance of a few hours of sunshine, while the south-southwest wind can be accompanied by lively, strong gusts. In the evening and at night, the wind can take a turn more to the west and northwest. The dawn will be milder, and the thermometers may show 12-21 degrees in the warmest hours.

What to expect on 15 March?

On the Hungarian national holiday, 15 March, the weather will be cloudy and gloomy in most of the country. However, in the western regions, the clouds may break up and the sun may shine in the afternoon hours. Precipitation is likely mainly in the central regions, the Great Hungarian Plain and the Northern Central Mountains, which may come mainly in the form of rain, but in some places it may also temporarily snow.

Due to the incoming cold front, the wind turning to the north and northwest may be accompanied by strong gusts. Frost is not expected anywhere in the morning, but only 2-10 degrees is projected in the afternoon. In certain parts of the country, primarily east of the Danube, the afternoon can be colder than the morning.

The weather on Thursday will be sunny

On Thursday, we can expect a great deal of sunshine. There may rain in some parts of Hungary, but all in all, we can leave our umbrellas at home. It can still freeze in several places in the morning, and the maximum temperature can be between 6 and 12 degrees during the day.

VIDEO, PHOTOS: Snow arrived earlier in Hungary than meteorologists calculated

Snow Hungary

As we wrote earlier, an Arctic cold front arrived in Hungary this morning. As a result, snowfall started in the Western and Southern regions of the country and some high mountains. Here are some photos and a video.

The snowing was not country-wide but took place in some of the coldest regions of Hungary today. Interestingly, meteorologists forecasted that only for tomorrow.

However, as the live feed broadcasted from Hungary’s highest peak, the KékestetÅ‘ (1,014m), snow has already arrived in Hungary today. Below is the southern ski slope:

And here is a photo taken today at 9 AM:

According to the Metkép, a Hungarian meteorological Facebook page, snow falls also in the Mecsek Mountains, South Hungary, close to Pécs. And here is a map showing that the cold front sweeps through the southern regions of Hungary:

Next week will mark the arrival of spring in Hungary

Spring Hungary weather

Based on the latest weather forecast, temperature may rise to 16 degrees next week. The weather will be sunny. Thus, we can state that spring will arrive after this year’s short and warm winter.

As we wrote today, heat records broke on Saturday in Budapest and Hungary since thermometers recorded almost 20 °C in Sopron, West Hungary. However, it seems the trend will remain next week even though it is still February which is a winter month in this latitude of the northern hemisphere.

According to the Hungarian Meteorological Service, next week will be windy, sometimes gusty, with showers in some parts of the country. But the weather will remain mild with no frosts and daily maximums above 15 °C, index.hu wrote.

That temperature will remain in the second half of the week. Meteorologists do not expect too much precipitation, but we should prepare for windy weather. Generally, the Northeastern counties will be colder and the Southwestern ones the warmest. There will be no frost this week, though the sky will remain cloudy.

National, Budapest heat records broken!

Both the national and Budapest heat records were broken on Saturday, the National Meteorological Service said, quoting unofficial preliminary data.

The previous record of 18.2 C. held by Pecs, in southern Hungary, on this day in 1955 was smashed in the area around Sopron, in the west, with 19.8 C. recorded today. Újpest in the capital recorded 15.1 C. 2019, and today 17 C. was recorded at several weather stations in Budapest.

Spring is not here yet, cold weather is coming to Hungary – weather forecast

budapest bad weather

Although the warm sunny days so far promised the arrival of spring, cold weather will reach Hungary on Sunday. This weather not only affects our mood, but it can also put a strain on our bodies.

The weather will be sunny until Sunday

For now, the temperature is still rising and we can enjoy the last rays of sunshine on Saturday. Therefore, it is recommended to spend time outside while the weather is still warm and sunny. Throughout the country, the temperature will be around 10 degrees Celsius. In some places, the temperature can even be above 15 degrees Celsius. On Sunday, however, cold weather arrives to Hungary.

This is how the weather affects our mental and physical health

“As for the mental state, it is also affected by the current weather. We are more inattentive, it is more difficult for us to complete our work for the day. It is no coincidence that there are more accidents at this time,” meteorologist Ferenc Pintér, director of the Meteo Clinic, told Ripost. “Cooling down and persistently cold weather affect the state of the circulatory system. In this case, our peripheral blood vessels narrow, resulting in higher blood pressure. It is important to wear a hat, scarf and gloves in persistently cold and windy weather. These help maintain proper circulation”, he said.

The meteorologist also highlighted the importance of skin moisturising and nourishing creams. They are important because our facial skin is most exposed to winter dryness and deteriorating nutrient supply. “Due to the cold, our mucous membranes dry out, especially in our nose. As a result of increased dehydration, the risk of developing infections increases because the defense ability of our mucous membranes weakens”, he explained.

What weather to expect next week

On Monday, 20 February, we can count on a very cloudy sky and some rain. There may even be snow in the mountains. According to idokep.hu, the daytime temperature can be around 6-7 degrees Celsius. A strong westerly wind is to be expected, which will greatly contribute to the gradual cooling. The highest temperature can be between 3 and 15 degrees, the lowest values can be measured in the northeast, and the highest values in the south and southwest. On Tuesday, no significant rainfall is likely, however, the wind can be strong and stormy in many places. The temperature will reach 10-15 degrees in the afternoon.

Red code in Hungary: -15 degrees, but here is when spring will return

Weather Hungary news Budapest winter cold

The interior ministry has issued a “red code” for three regions in Hungary due to sub-zero temperatures, allowing special assistance to homeless people, State Secretary Attila Fülöp said on Tuesday.

Under the measure, communal institutions must provide accommodation to homeless or needy people in south-eastern, northern, and central parts of the country in the next few days starting on Tuesday evening. According to the national weather service, nighttime temperatures could fall below -10 degrees Celsius.

The state secretary warned that spending long periods of time outside in such cold weather could be dangerous and called on residents to contact the hotline of homeless shelters if they encountered rough sleepers. He added that shelters nationwide were 81 percent full, allowing room for further admissions.

Here is a temperature map of Hungary. You can see that there were some Northern regions where the thermometres showed only -15 degrees yesterday night:

According to Gergő Simon, a meteorologist of the Hungarian Meteorological Services, the weather will remain cold but sunny for a couple of more days. However, on the weekend, they expect warming.

VIDEO, PHOTOS: Brutal windstorm in Hungary, buildings collapsed, trees uprooted, traffic disastrous

Windstorm-Hungary-building-collapsed

A video about the collapse of the grande gate of a Penny Market in Mohács went viral today in Hungary. The windstorm was so strong that it caused considerable damage in the country and turned the traffic upside down.

According to telex.hu, disaster management officers had to intervene in 2,300 places, mostly in Transdanubia. They are still working to help people in trouble and reduce the damage the extreme weather caused in many parts of the country. For example, the grande stone gate of the Penny Market in Mohács, a small town in South Hungary, collapsed because of the wind.

As you can see in the video below, it was just a matter of seconds before the gate buried a car leaving the supermarket. Bystanders were in shock, passers-by rushed there, asking around whether they could help or not.

The Hungarian Meteorological Service shared why the windstorm came into being. The reason was the air pressure difference between East and West Hungary, reaching 15 hPa. In the East, there was 1012 hPa, while in the West, 1027 hPa, portfolio.hu wrote.

Below, you may check out the video:

The Hungarian Meterological Service (OMSZ) issued the highest (red) warning for today because of the strong wind. Wind speed exceeded 110 km/h today in Hungary in Baranya, Fejér, Somogy, Veszprém, and Zala counties.
