Record high low temperatures recorded in Budapest on Christmas Day
The National Meteorological Service recorded 6.6 degrees Celsius lows in Budapest on 25 December, the warmest ever recorded that day.
The previous Budapest record was 6.5 C, recorded in 1950. The highest temperature also broke the record: in Budapest Újpest, the temperature climbed to 13.9 degrees Celsius, two tenths above the previous record.
One day before Christmas Eve, PécsMa reported that a beautiful snow layer had formed on the higher parts of the Mecsek Hills. On the first day of Christmas, however, there was no sign of it: the holiday brought spring-like weather. According to data from the National Meteorological Service (OMSZ), the thermometer in Kémes in Baranya, for example, showed 18 degrees on Monday. That is about 12 degrees above the maximum temperature usual for this time of year.

The biggest flood of the last 10 years to arrive to Budapest
Thanks to Saturday’s heavy snowfall nationwide, it looks like we’ll be having a white Christmas this year. What else will we get under the Christmas tree? Hopefully not the Danube.
According to forecasts, the Danube’s water level may reach the lower embankment for the first time since 2013. Thankfully, flood defences are underway in the capital. Canal locks and lower-level surface crossings are being closed in preparation.
Forecast warning
In the recent period, precipitation ranging from 10 to 30 millimetres in the Carpathian Basin, and much more in the Alps has occurred, writes szeretlekmagyarorszag.hu. Adding that occasionally it can reach up to 30-70 millimetres of mixed precipitation. The variable, often rainy and windy weather will persist over the weekend, with further expected precipitation of 10-20 millimetres. Austrian catchment areas are expected to receive twice that amount in several waves.
Adding to the concern, from Sunday onwards, warming is anticipated in most of the Carpathian Basin, triggering snowmelt even at altitudes of 3000 meters. Consequently, flood waves are expected on the Danube.
Emergency action
According to the statement made by the Budapest Sewage Works on Saturday to MTI, preparations are already in motion. Budapest is getting ready for the Christmas spirit as well as the possible flood. Employees of the Budapest Sewage Works have inspected main collectors and ensured the lockability of canals. Anticipating a rise in the Danube water level, protective measures have been implemented at locations like the underpass of Kastélypark Street in the 22nd district and the holiday shore of Kossuth in the 3rd district.
So far, nine locations have been closed in response to rising water levels to safeguard the city from flooding during the Christmas holidays. Here’s to hoping Hungary experiences a white and dry Christmas this year!

Will Hungary have a white Christmas? – weather forecast for Christmas week
Unfortunately, in most parts of Hungary, the chances of a white Christmas are increasingly close to zero. Strong breezy but mild early spring days are forecast from Friday, with temperatures in the south-west approaching 15 degrees on Christmas Eve.
Predictions have not been good for a white Christmas, and according to Portfolio, it is now becoming increasingly clear that the trend, which is sad for many, will not be broken this time either. This means that most of Hungary is not going to have a white Christmas.
“Who” took white Christmas away from us?
Cyclones moving west to east from the Atlantic will meet each other in the second half of the week, with a strengthening westerly flow and much milder, sometimes moist air masses than the season. On Christmas Eve, 15 degrees in the southwest is possible.
According to the forecast of the weather forecast forecast service Időkép, strong and stormy westerly winds will be frequent on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with intermittent rain and showers and no sign of winter temperatures. There will be only a few spells of light frost overnight, with highs of 10 degrees and above in the daytime, and temperatures in the southwest approaching 15 degrees on Sunday.
The remaining snow cover in the mountains is also expected to melt by the holidays. Thus, the chances of a white Christmas in most part os the country are getting closer to zero, they added.
Front after front in the second half of the week
The calm period ends, with windy, occasionally wet weather replacing the fog. The first cold front arrives today, according to Időkép. The anticyclone, which has been calm, causing persistent fog in several places, will be replaced by cyclones and their fronts.
On Wednesday, morning we can expect foggy weather over a large area, but during the day, the first cold front will arrive from the northwest. The front will not bring much precipitation, with a few light showers in the northwest.
However, northwesterly winds are picking up in some areas, breaking up the fog and layer clouds that have been filling our basin. Highs will be between 0 and 10 degrees Celsius, with the coldest in the foggiest areas.
On Thursday afternoon, a warm front will move over us from the northwest, with increasing rain and snow in the northeast from the evening. Southwest winds will be strong in many places during the day, strong in the north, with highs of 3 to 9 degrees in the afternoon.

PHOTOS: Hungarian castles that you should visit in the winter
Thanks to a recent wave of reconstruction, all three castles have born anew. Immerse yourself in the Christmas spirit at Gyula, uncover the clandestine history of the Nádasdy family, or take a glimpse into the life of a great Hungarian painter – and better yet, experience all three!
Celebrate Christmas at the Almásy Castle in Gyula!
This year, Gyula’s iconic castle will host its Advent programme, the Magical Christmas Castle. Visitors can relish the festive atmosphere amid magical surroundings, with everything a Christmas fair could offer and more! The Almásy Castle ‘s Christmas tree will be exhibited in the winter garden, alongside a terrain model depicting a snow-covered town and a giant nutcracker.
During Advent Saturdays, guests can partake in various workshops – from crafting gingerbread houses to fashioning pine decorations, Advent wreaths and Grinch trees. Moreover, they can receive guidance in preparing sauces for roasted meats and wrapping gifts, all within the castle’s walls.
The castle park will host various events, including theatre performances and concerts. On 23rd December, the Erkel Ferenc Mixed Choir will deliver a special Christmas performance. Throughout this period, a shoebox fundraiser will also take place.
Discover the secrets of the Nádasdy Castle!
This castle hides many secrets, from its roof to the library and the charming English garden with its pond and waterfall. Delve into the past of the Nádasdy family, commissioned by Ferenc Nádasdy and his wife, Ilona Zichy, completed in 1876 and inhabited by the family until World War II.
Initially, the building was constructed by István Linzbauer, but the master architect could not finish the castle, so the work was taken over by Alajos Hauszmann, whose influence is evident in the Ancestors’ Hall, showcasing life-size family portraits. Another noteworthy addition by Hauszmann is the impressive library, captivating visitors with intricate bookshelves, columns, and paneling.
Nádasdy Castle offers a tour titled “The Castle of Legends,” guiding visitors through the entire castle to explore the history of the renowned family and everyday life in that bygone era.
Peek into the life of one of the greatest Hungarian painters at the Benczúr Manor!
After three years of extensive renovations, Benczúr Manor is reopening its doors on the 1st of December, writes turizmus.com. Thanks to over one billion HUF (EUR 2,630,759) in non-refundable European Union funds, the manor has been restored to its original state as part of the National Castle Programme and National Fortress Programme, complete with a new permanent exhibition.
Within the renovated spaces, 18 original Benczúr paintings, relics, drapes, reproductions, photos and short films guide visitors through the manor and the life of the famous painter. Gyula Benczúr’s love for Nógrád landscapes inspired him to buy and reconstruct this manor in his old age, even converting the old granary into a separate studio.
Mostly serving as a summer residence and studio, the building later functioned as a school, council house and cultural centre after nationalisation. The intense use over the years led to deterioration, but luckily EU funds saved this crucial piece of Hungarian cultural history. The reconstruction also added features to better accommodate a tourist complex showcasing Gyula Benczúr’s life.
New service areas, including a reception area, cloakroom, café, gift shop and renovated restrooms, have been introduced. The manor’s surroundings have been revitalised, and a visitor parking lot has been established. The building is now prepared to welcome curious souls seeking a culturally refreshing insight into the life of one of Hungary’s greatest painters.

Alert issued: Brutal snowfall hits Hungary, drive safe!
The Mecsek Hills and the higher points in the southwest are now completely covered with snow. In the Simonfa area near Kaposvár, even the signposts are no longer visible, with reports of 20-25 cm of snow cover. Snow is falling in the west of the country with varying intensity, but continuously. The Hungarian Public Roads (Magyar Közút) asks drivers to drive carefully and with caution, depending on the weather conditions.
Snow has been falling in most parts of the Transdanubian region since overnight, with some areas recording snow depths of up to 10 cm early in the morning, Pénzcentrum writes. However, the forecast predicts that the fresh snow cover could double, and even more could fall in the Bakony and Vértes Mountains.
Thick snow cover
According to reports, the Mecsek and the higher points in the south-west are now completely covered with snow. In the Simonfa area near Kaposvár,
no signposts were visible, with reports of 20-25 cm of snow cover.
According to the latest forecasts, snowfall will gradually spread to the rest of the country starting from late afternoon on Wednesday. Up to 10-15 centimetres of fresh snow may fall in the higher-lying areas of the northeast, i.e. in Nógrád, Heves and Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén counties.
Snow clearing and de-icing on Hungarian roads
The Hungarian Public Roads (Magyar Közút) announced that since 10 November it has been continuously carrying out the necessary snow clearing and de-icing works in winter operation, Pénzcentrum reports. Since then, a total of more than 28,000 tonnes of salt and almost 1.7 million litres of calcium chloride solution have been distributed on the national road network in areas affected by snow and sleet. In the next few days, these operations will continue to be carried out in 12-hour shifts, from 0 to 24 hours.
At the same time, motorists are again reminded that even with their hard work, until the snow stops, there may be periods of wintry road conditions. On the 31,000-kilometre national road network, around 700 machines can be deployed. This means that one machine can cover an average of about 40 kilometres of road, including the driving on and off the roads, salt and fuel refuelling, in 2-4 hours, and in the event of heavy snowfall, snow can remain on the surface again.
Motorists should therefore continue to drive with caution on Wednesday and Thursday. They are urged to drive carefully, drive slowly and only use vehicles fitted with winter tyres, and check the current road and visibility conditions and traffic conditions before travelling at www.utinform.hu.

These are Hungary’s best ski slopes: which one is your favourite?
Spending the winter time in Hungary and thinking about trying skiing in the area? You don’t even have to leave the country to find amazing ski slopes. Even though Austria’s ski resorts are said to be some of the best in the world, Hungary also boasts some great places to try this thrilling winter sport. Below are some of the best ones.
Choosing to ski in Hungary also means choosing better prices and less crowded places to enjoy the winter season. It’s important to note that ski slopes in Hungary may open and close depending on the weather. Thus, before visiting any of them, it is worth checking their websites to see if they are open, magyarorszagom.hu warns. The portal also collected Hungary’s best ski resorts.
Ski slopes on the peak of Hungary, Kékestető
Hungary’s highest point is the peak of the Mátra in the North Hungarian Mountains. It is called Kékestető and is 1014 metres high. Evidently, one of the best ski slopes can be found there. One of the oldest ski slopes in Hungary consists of two slopes. The southern slope is more suitable for beginners: there, snow cannons will help you slide smoothly when the natural snowfall subsides.
The almost 600-metre northern slope, however, is one of the most difficult in the country. There are no snow cannons, so skiers can only rely on the weather. Rental and dining facilities are available, and the TV tower offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside. (The Kékestető ski slopes have not yet opened this year.)
Síaréna (Ski Arena) in Eplény
This ski resort is located in Western Hungary. Its vast area and varied slopes make it one of the most popular in Hungary. More than 40 snow guns guarantee the freshness of the 7 km of slopes. Skiers have access to seven ski lifts, magyarorszagom.hu informs. Due to its popularity, crowds are often expected here: however, the situation is still not as grave as on foreign slopes. (The Síaréna in Eplény has not yet opened this year.)
Nagyvillám Ski Slope
Visegrád is popular all year round, and the winter season is no exception, with crowds of skiers flocking here. The Nagyvillám Ski Slope also offers tobogganing and other winter activities. Of course, the lack of natural snow is prepared for every year, and snow cannons are used to supplement the snowfall if necessary. Those who want to take a break from the cold can rest in the cosy ski huts. Also, those who don’t bring their own equipment can rent some here. (The Nagyvillám Ski Slope has not yet opened this year.)
Sípark (Ski Park) in Mátraszentistván
Have you tried skiing in the famous Mátra mountain of Hungary? If not, now is the time to do so. The Mátraszentistván Ski Park offers ten slopes of different difficulty levels and a total of 3 kilometres of floodlit trails, which are even suitable for evening skiing. Ski lessons are available in the park, so beginners are also recommended to visit. (The Ski Park in Mátraszentistván has not yet opened this year.)

Christmas is approaching: Advent traditions and curiosities in Hungary
People usually already spend the Advent season in full festive mode. It is not uncommon in Hungary either. We decorate, we bake cakes and pastries all December long—some of us even start earlier. But what are Hungary’s Advent traditions? You may find them below, along with some curiosities.
When is Advent?
Advent starts on the fourth Sunday before Christmas (25 December) and lasts until Christmas. Advent dates back to the 4th century, magyarorszagom.hu informs. Pope Gregory VII set the number of Sundays of Advent at four. The first Sunday of Advent always falls between 27 November and 3 December, while the fourth and last Sunday falls between 18 December and 24 December. The first Sunday of Advent also marks the beginning of three seasons: the start of the Christian Church year, the beginning of the Christmas cycle and the beginning of the Advent season.
Traditions
Instead of loud, spectacular celebrations, the Advent season is a time of quiet, intimate expectation. There are many traditions and superstitions associated with Advent in Hungary. For example, if a girl in a marriageable age tears three pieces from a bell rope and ties them in her hair, she is sure to find a suitor in the near future.
Advent in Hungary
The canonical hours is also an Advent tradition. It is when people go to mass every morning from the first Sunday of Advent until Christmas Day. It is also called the Angelic Mass. According to magyarorszagom.hu, it is believed that before the dawn mass, there were witches outside, and barns had to be locked down until the first bell rang. Also during Advent, some people buried money in the hope that it would be cleansed.

The first Advent wreath was made by a pastor in Hamburg in the 1800s. Nowadays, the Advent wreath is circular, usually made of (or covered by) pine branches and four candles. In Catholic homes, these candles are usually purple, except for the one that symbolises the third Sunday, which is pink. Each Sunday of Advent, a new candle is lit to symbolise the ever-increasing light of God. On the last Sunday, all four candles of the Advent wreath are lit.
Advent calendar
The Advent calendar dates from the early 20th century. The first calendar was made by a German mother for her son Gerhard, who couldn’t wait until Christmas Day to unwrap his presents. To give him something to entertain him, her mother took a hard piece of paper and stuck 24 small pieces of chocolate on it, one of which Gerhard could eat every day.
Almost every day of Advent has some special meaning and tradition attached to it. The most famous of these are St. Barbara (4 December), St. Nicholas (6 December), St. Lucy (13 December) and St. Thomas (21 December).

New ice rink opens near the shores of Lake Balaton
Balatonfüred already had reason to be proud of its ice rink, but with these new additions, it can boast even more. The ice rink is undergoing a serious renovation and expansion, meaning that there’s even more chilled fun waiting for visitors and locals alike once the frost sets in. The ice rink is located at the waterfront so guests can not only have plenty of space for skating, but they can also enjoy the fantastic view.
The renewed ice rink of Balatonfüred will stretch on for a kilometer. Skaters can enjoy the beloved Zákony Street, and ice rinks will also be open to visitors on the Tagore promenade and Vitorlás Square. The three rinks will be connected by a new ice corridor that will make the ice rink system stand out in many aspects. The corridor will provide a separate lane for back and forth skating traffic and a terrific view of Lake Balaton.
Changes in the air
András Holczer, deputy major, said to balatonfured.hu that “the city has successfully operated the Zákonyi ice rink for years and we would like to extend the community space it has become. That’s why we’re providing a unique winter experience for the locals and visitors of the city. The new ice rink will be impressive, spectacular, and beloved.”
The new chilled experience with the three combined ice rinks will have around 1600 squaremetres for the skaters to explore. The facilities will include a buffet, warming area, rental tent and secure lockers. The rinks will also be able to host several icy sport, such as ice hockey and curling. Those who are a little bit unstable on their skates have nothing to fear, because there are also animal-shaped skating aids.
Accommodating the rink
Those who don’t skate have nothing to worry about either, the waterfront will still be accessible to those without skates. There will be a special overhead pedestrian bridge, built above the ice corridor so those who don’t wish to be on the ice can still enjoy the view. The Vitorlás Square Park, waterfront, and buildings can still be accessed with a slight detour, the only modifications in traffic will be Zákonyi Street temporarily becoming a dead-end and the relocation of the Vitorlás Square bus stop. Other than that, life goes on as normal in the icy Venice of the Balaton.
There are multiple entrances to the rink system, two of which are located on the ice corridor. Tickets can be bought at the Zákonyi and Vitorlás rinks at a friendly price rate. Locals, children and students can claim discounts, although prices may vary on the weekends. The opening for the Zákonyi rink will be held on the 1st of December and the total of the rink system will be open to guests from the middle of December until the end of January of 2024.
