PHOTOS: Lumina Park reopened, Budapest’s past is shining at Palatinus
The Lumina Park welcomes guests back with a shimmering replica of the Chain Bridge, the underground metro made of string lights, the Golden Team and the Paul Street Boys and many more sights!
The theme this year is based on the 150th birthday of Budapest. In honour of this momentous event, the frame for the lightpark is timetravel. You can walk through the most well-known historical phases of the city surrounded by magical lights.
The Lumina Park will be on display until 4th of March on the Palatinus Beach.
The story of Lumina Park started last year with the intention of attracting guests to the Margret Island in the colder winter months. The Budapest Spa and Thermal Baths Plc. (BGYH) was looking to balance the summer and winter months and found the solution together with the polish company Lumina sp. z o.o. This company was already operating lightparks in several Polish cities, and was planning to expand. Budapest, more specifically the Palatinus, turned out to be the perfect spot for a new lightpark.
Read more about last year’s exhibition HERE.
“With Lumina Park, we created Budapest’s winter attraction last year, which was a hit with both residents and tourists. We concluded the season with more than 200,000 visitors,”
Ildikó Borosné Szűts, CEO of Budapest Spa and Thermal Baths Plc., commented on the ceremonial opening of the second Lumina Park.
Gergely Karácsony was also among the attendees of said opening event. He stated that unlike last year (when the energy crisis was at its peak), the Christmas lights will be installed again this year.
Krzysztof Sachs, creative director of the Lumina company, said that every lightpark has a unique theme, so they were open to the idea of a park inspired by the history of Budapest. In his words, the final result was not only spectacular but also educational with a touch of nostalgia.
At the entrance gate, after walking under a clock going backwards, we can see legionaries. This nod towards Aquincum and the Romans precedes the “time labyrinth” which takes us forward into the nineteenth century. Here, we can marvel at a garden “dancing” to operetta hits and even an underground metro rumbling along the Andrássy Avenue.
We can enjoy the spectacle of the iconic symbols of Budapest: the Chain Bridge with its lions and the dazzling Parliament.
The walk continues from here to the 1950s and to the era of rock and disco. We can see installations of the Golden Team, the Paul Street Boys and among others, some period specific cars, like the Trabant and the Zaporozhet.
After this trip to the past, we arrive to present-day Budapest. In the end we can even catch a glimpse of the future, where everything will be controlled by robots.
A great feature of the lightpark are its many interactive parts. You can board most vehicles or beat the drums.
The “time travel” takes about one and a half hour. The Lumina Park is open from sundown to 9 pm everyday until the 4th of March.
According to the BGYH, this year, the Lumina Christmas Park will also open its gates between 10 November and 15 January. During this time, the Lumina Christmas Park will be held in the park of Római fürdő ensuring a proper Christmas atmosphere.
The Budapest spa establishment has signed a three-year agreement with the Polish Lumina company. This means we can be sure that next year, there will be a Lumina Park to enjoy for residents and tourists alike.
Stunning places where you can go sledding and skiing in Hungary
Winter is not over yet, so in the coming days, you will still have the opportunity to go sledding and skiing in Hungary. Here are some stunning places to enjoy winter sports with your friends or family.
Sledding at Normafa
Over the weekend, the operators of Normafa Park were able to start the snow cannons, therefore, you can go sledding and skiing again. Both tracks can be used with lighting until 10 PM. According to the information of Normafa Park, the classic and skating tracks have also been laid. The tennis court also has the usual practice strips, and the court is illuminated until 10 PM. However, everyone is asked to use the cross-country skiing track only in cross-country skiing equipment. The toboggan run under the playground can be used with sleds and slides.
No skiing but sledding at Dobogókő
Dobogókő has been struggling with a lack of snow for years, and the possibility of skiing could only be recreated with intensive snow bombardment, writes hellovidek.hu. It is currently in a temporary state, the old lift has already been removed, but the construction of the new one has not yet started, so there will definitely not be a ski season here this year. However, there is an area where you can go sledding. A suitable slope for this is, for example, the approximately 200 m long section leading from the relay station beyond the ski slope to the top of the ski slope and the slope starting from Ady Endre Street.
Skiing in Eplény
The Síaréna Vibe Park in the heart of Bakony welcomes sport lovers in the winter season. The Vibe Park located in Eplény is Hungary’s largest and most modern ski complex. Skiers and snowboarders can indulge their passion on a total of 7,908 meters of track system and 16 different ski slopes in the park area. A 100-meter-long, blue-marked piste is available for beginners, while experienced skiers can choose the red or black piste. In Eplény, you can ski even after dark, as a 4-kilometer-long illuminated ski track awaits visitors.
Mátraszentistván
Good news for ski-lovers, the FIS 1 ski slope opened on Wednesday, 8 February. The Mátraszentistván Ski Park is located in Upper Mátra, 6 km from Galyatető and less than 100 km from Budapest. The length of the ski park’s 6 slopes is 4,300 meters in total, which are spread over an area of more than 9 hectares. One of the best advantages of the ski park is that it offers an extremely wonderful panorama to the skiers, and it also has night lighting. In the Mátraszentistván Ski Park, an adult daily ticket costs HUF 7,500 (EUR 19,45), and a child daily ticket costs HUF 5,500 (EUR 14,26).
Homeless people flocking to Budapest due to extreme cold
On Tuesday, a code red for cold weather came into operation in three regions in Hungary, meaning that all social services are now obliged to take in people who are homeless or in distress. Some places are full. Almost twice as many people have frozen to death this year than two years ago.
The “red alert”, during which many of the capital’s organisations operate as night shelters, means that everyone is accommodated in the extreme cold. BKK drivers and the staff of the Municipal Police Directorate of Budapest (FÖRI) are also keeping a close eye on the homeless.

The dispatching service run by the Menhely Alapítvány (Shelter Foundation) is coordinating more crisis vans and street social workers than usual to ensure that help arrives as quickly as possible in response to calls. Mayor Gergely Karácsony drew attention to the fact that “a significant number of deaths from cold in Budapest do not occur in public places, but in unheated dwellings. Particular attention should be paid to elderly people living alone”. He asked all Budapest citizens to call the Shelter Foundation’s dispatch service if they encounter a homeless person in need of help.
Occupancy rate in shelters has reached 80 percent
According to data from the dispatching service run by the Shelter Foundation, in recent days, the occupancy rate in Budapest’s night shelters has reached 80 percent, leaving a total of 350-400 places available. The problem with accommodation facilities is not one of quantity but of quality.
However, the number of people staying in night shelters and temporary accommodation, and the capacity utilisation rate have decreased in Budapest over the last 5-7 years, except during periods of crisis. Thus, even on the coldest days, occupancy rates do not rise above 90 percent.
“Despite the relatively mild winter, almost 100 people had already frozen to death in the country by the time the code red was announced in mid-January,”
wrote hvg.hu.
It is not only the capital that is affected
However, homelessness is far from being the problem of only the capital city. Currently, two counties – Nógrád and Tolna – have night shelters with occupancy rates of over 120 percent, Budapest’s municipality told Népszava. Because of this, social workers sometimes refer the homeless from other municipalities to shelters in Budapest.
Almost two million people live in housing poverty in Hungary, with an estimated 12-14 thousand homeless people in the country, half of them in Budapest. The number of homeless people has fallen by a fifth in the last two years, which experts explain by a shortage of labour.
Last year at this time – between the beginning of October 2021 and the beginning of January 2022 – 82 people froze to death, compared with 55 at the same time of year a year earlier.
Hungary’s most famous ski park in danger? Price rises do not cover costs
The Mátraszentistván Ski Park, the highest and most popular ski resort in Hungary, has had an above average season so far. Although prices have risen considerably, the situation is still bearable, at least as the heavy tourist flow proves.
COVID-19 has been replaced by galloping inflation
With many neighbouring countries in total closure, the Hungarian ski resort at 822 metres above sea level has seen record levels of visitors for two years and last year, despite the pandemic. Czechs, Slovaks and Poles had nowhere to ski but in the Mátra. Even ski tourists from distant, exotic countries such as Israel came to Mátraszentistván.
The 7 degrees Celsius temperature down in the valley did not scare off visitors, as the 30 snow machines in the ski park ensure zero temperatures up there, Tamás Erbeszkorn, the sports centre’s press officer, said to Index.hu.
The ski park is running at almost full capacity. The hut has everything you could possibly want, as long as you have a big budget. Prices have certainly gone up since 2021. Back then, 0,2 litre of mulled wine cost HUF 800 (EUR 2.05), and 0,3 litre was HUF 1,000 (EUR 2.57). Now it’s HUF 1000 and 1450 (EUR 2.57 and 3.72). A plate of bean goulash HUF 2950 (EUR 7.58), a fried pork cutlet with a side dish costs HUF 4400 (EUR 11.30).
“Last season was our best yet, we welcomed skiers for 107 days without a break, a record since 2004, when the ski park opened. In 2021, for example, the season only had to end in April, when the snow vanished”
said Tamás Erbeszkorn.
The closures of the Ski Park are part of the deal
The season started on 19 December 2022. They were open for 20 days, then a fierce heat front arrived and they had to close. They reopened last weekend. The fact that the park had to be closed for two weeks this year is part of the deal, the press officer points out, two out of ten years there is a break.
Now the snow cover has a thickness of between 40 and 80 centimetres, of course only part of it is natural snow, the rest is made up from the snow cannon, adds Tamás. Next week, when the temperatures drop to minus 10 degrees Celsius, the snow will be at its best.
The water needed for snowmaking is provided by four small reservoirs. The melting snow is not wasted, it flows back into the lower pond and is then cannoned again, so the recycling process is in full rotation. One snow cannon costs roughly HUF 7 million (EUR 18,000), and the old ones are being replaced with digital new ones.
The price increase only covers a fraction of the cost
According to Index, a one-day ski pass costs EUR 53 in Obertauern, Austria’s top ski resort. In Mátraszentistván, a full-price day pass costs HUF 13,500 (EUR 34.67), up from HUF 10,000 (EUR 25.68) last year – a 35 percent increase, although electricity prices have risen tenfold, so the ticket price increase only covers a fraction of the cost. They are trying to bring prices in line with increases in ski parks of similar category and conditions in other countries, mainly in Slovakia and Slovenia.
A daily ski lift ticket costs HUF 13,500 (EUR 34.67), renting a pair of skis for a day costs about the same, HUF 13,000 (EUR 33.38), says a guest. If you hire a personal trainer, it’s another HUF 13,000, but if you join a group, it’s only HUF 7,000 (EUR 17.97).
There is one chair lift, built at a cost of no less than HUF 900 million (EUR 2,311,057) a few years ago, and the others are so-called “chock ski lifts”, where skiers tow themselves to the top while standing.
There are ten trails, the steepest of which, which is suitable for FIS races, is closed for now. The longest track is 1,200 metres long, the red track is now open, and the Lovers’ track is now also in operation, where the lights add to the special atmosphere. The Ski Park, open every Friday and Saturday until 8 PM, is for those who come specifically for romantic night skiing, but for early arrivals on weekends, the slopes open at 8 AM to allow for uncrowded skiing.

Therefore, crowds of people went to the Mátra today, causing traffic jams. Some other regions of the country are also covered in snow. Want to experience real winter in 2023? We will show you where to travel in Hungary these days below.
Index.hu wrote this afternoon that many people travelled to the Mátra this morning, resulting in traffic jams on the minor roads leading up to the mountain. The good news is that the ski park in Mátraszentistván opened this morning.
Snowfall was not serious today in Hungary, 1-2 cm fell in the upper regions of North and West. Since the temperature did not go below the freezing point that melted almost immediately. The exceptions are the mountainous regions where locals and tourists can experience a real winter.
On the Kékestető, Hungary’s highest peak (1014m), the snow is 37 centimetres. Although the ski slopes are closed, there are a lot of people wandering in the white paradise.

Hungarian and European gas storage levels are high
Gas storage levels are high across Europe, including in Hungary, thanks to a mild winter, Energy Minister Csaba Lantos said on Sunday.
Though Europe continues to receive gas from Russia, a protracted war cannot be ruled out, the minister told public broadcaster Kossuth Radio, adding that a rise in gas prices was also a possibility.
Commenting on European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s remark that the European Union could face a gap of 30 billion cubic metres of gas, Lantos said that around 25 large liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals were being built across the bloc which could give the EU access to LNG.
Once those terminals are built, Europe will be able to say that it is truly independent from Russian gas, Lantos said. He added that though the LNG terminals were under construction, the winter of 2023-2024 would be a “tough” one for the continent.
Hungary, however, is in a slightly different position given the relatively high number of gas storage facilities in the country, Lantos said. As long as the Serbian pipeline is functioning, those storage facilities will be filled, he added.
The minister noted that the government will continue to provide cheap gas for Hungarians up to average consumption levels. The gas price above the threshold for average consumption is also below the market price, he said, noting that the government has decided not to raise that price in the current heating period ending on 30 April.

Lantos also talked about the need to strengthen Hungary’s energy sovereignty. “We are highly dependent on foreign suppliers when it comes to energy,” he said. “This dependence has to be reduced.”
Though Hungary’s natural resources are not limitless, “we are not completely helpless,” Lantos said.
He noted that in 2021 the country’s annual natural gas consumption came to around 10 billion cubic metres, 1.5 billion of which can be produced domestically. The aim, he said, was to increase domestic natural gas extraction to 2 billion cubic metres a year.
Also, Hungary will continue to make use of weather-dependent renewable energy sources like solar and wind energy, Lantos said. Hungary’s solar plants were originally planned to reach a capacity of 6,000 megawatts by 2030, but that goal is now ahead of schedule, he said.
Meanwhile, Lantos said the upgrade of the country’s nuclear plant in Paks could be completed by 2032.
Snowfall to come in Hungary – we will show you where
No snowfall is expected over the weekend in Hungary. However, on Monday snow is forecast in the mountains of the country. In general, however, the weather will remain as in recent days: spring-like and not at all one that is suitable for a January.
Snowfall is not expected for the rest of the weekend in Hungary. Sunday will remain mild for the season, with early spring-like weather in many places. It is worth taking advantage of the milder weather, as precipitation is expected in many places on Monday, Index warns.
On Sunday, the fog will lift during the day due to the increasing southerly winds, but may persist in the north. Sunshine is expected mainly in the south of the country. Temperatures will be between 5 and 8 degrees Celsius in the north and northeast and between 9 and 15 degrees Celsius elsewhere.

Mediterranean cyclone could bring snowfall in the country’s mountains
Early next week, on Monday morning, a Mediterranean cyclone will bring heavy rainfall to our region, with precipitation of over 20 millimetres in places. The cold front on the back of the cyclone will bring a few degrees cooler air. There will be no major changes in the weather, but in the Pilis and Börzsöny areas around the Danube Bend, the air may cool down to near freezing point, so snowfall is expected in these mountain ranges.
On the mountain tops, snowfall is expected on Dobogókő, Csóványos and Nagy-Hideg. Temperatures will also rise to between 5 and 12 degrees Celsius by early afternoon even with strong southerly winds after the morning showers. From the afternoon, the wind will turn north-northwest in the Transdanubian region.
Weather on Tuesday
A cold front will arrive on Tuesday, with rain in the east in the afternoon, and decreasing clouds from the west. Winds will be strong in many areas, gusty in Transdanubia. During the day, temperatures are expected to be between 4 and 9 degrees Celsius. On Wednesday, frost may occur in several places at dawn, but after that, the weather will ease again, according to Időkép.
Hungarian snowboarder takes down skiers in Austria — VIDEO
A Hungarian snowboarder ventured by himself to the K section of the Austrian Rosenkranz Ski Centre. However, the unlucky man fell and slid back down, dragging many skiers along with him.
Sielok.hu has spotted what an 18-year-old Hungarian snowboarder did at Austria’s Kreischberg Ski Centre. He wrongly clinged with both hands to the ski lift to get up a steep section. As a result, he fell and then slid back down, crushing several skiers.
The man left the scene without assistance. The incident was recorded at 11 am on Wednesday morning. According to the local newspaper, the Hungarian man had an accident with the pickaxe, which slipped from his feet. This caused him to fall and sweep away the people behind him. Some managed to avoid him, but several were mowed down. The incident was also recorded on a video.
Four of the skiers behind him were injured, one of them was taken by ambulance while three of them made it to hospital by themselves. The Hungarian who left without assistance was caught by the police later on.
