Check out the 10 best Hungarian lookout towers!
The Xantus János Gömbklilátó in Balatonboglár got 3901 votes thus won the Lookout of the Year title.
In September, Active Hungary launched a competition called the Lookout of the Year, aiming to promote Hungarian lookouts.
177 entries were received, from which the professional jury selected the 10 finalist.
They also took into account the condition of the building, the orderliness of the environment, the level of service, the quality of the hiking trail leading to the lookout, the panorama and the importance of ecotourism. An important aspect was that only a lookout tower that had been built in the last ten years or underwent major renovations could enter the final.
Among the ten finalist lookouts, the audience could vote on the Aktív Magyarország Facebook page between October 7 and 16.
Here you can see the final result:
- Xantus János Gömbkilátó (Balatonboglár): 3901 votes
- Zengő-lookout (Pécsvárad): 3871 votes
- Írott-kő lookout (Kőszeg): 1515 votes
- Galya-lookout (Galyatető): 1406 votes
- Ranzinger-lookout (Tatabánya): 1381 votes

The Xantus János Gömbkilátó in Balatonboglár is an important symbol for the city. From the 15-meter-diameter building, we can admire Lake Balaton. The lookout was built according to the plans of István Kádár in the 1950s; then it was moved to its current location in the 1960s. In the next decade, it was named Xantus János.
After a lengthy refurbishment, it reopened to visitors on 22 July 2012. In the summer of 2013, a toboggan run and adventure park were built next to the lookout. Picnics and concerts are also organised in the area.
This year, 128,000 people turned up at the Gömbkilátó all over the country
said Szilárd Csiszár, the operator of the lookout and adventure park.
Similar to this competition, Aktív Magyarország is looking for the Tourist House of the Year. The selected ten best applicants can be voted on the Aktív Magyarország Facebook page from October 19.
