The coolest running track in Budapest has opened – check it out!
The city centre’s first running track around the Olympic Park is ready. In a few days, runners can take over the running track in District V.
New development – running track
“We’re building a running track for those in the city centre!”
Péter Szentgyörgyvölgyi, Mayor of District V, announced on his social media site earlier this year.
As nullahategy.hu wrote in its article in January, the Municipality completely renovated the Olympic Park in 2014. More than 2,000 square metres of a playground and a sports field for football, handball, and basketball provide opportunities for movement and sport. The park is now richer with a new feature: the running track along the route between the Olympic Park, Széchenyi Quay, Markó Street, Balassi Bálint Street, and Balaton Street is 436 metres long and 120 cm wide.
Additions and purposes
The circuit also includes a solar-powered LED speed board, training stands, lockers, and a drinking fountain. As we can read in hirado.hu’s article, Péter Szentgyörgyvölgyi, Mayor of District V, said the following on the occasion of the handover:
“The Municipality of the Inner City is continuously improving the conditions for an active lifestyle in accordance with the needs of the population. We are now also catering to those who like to run outdoors by creating a track that provides an ideal sporting environment for this purpose.”
Doing sports
The mayor opened the running track with the honorary citizen of the district, Dr Gábor Zacher, who said the following about the construction:
“Maybe it will help people to really start doing sports, which is terribly needed, as obesity was quite common in Hungary during the epidemic, with everyone gaining an average of 5 kilos of extra weight”.
As hirado.hu reported, Dr Gábor Zacher said that, as someone whose hobby is running, he feels the difference between running on concrete and on the pleasantly soft synthetic surface made of polyurethane [“rekortán” in Hungarian – ed.]. He also pointed out that if people have a running track right in front of them and do not have to run on concrete, they will certainly find it easier to put on their running shoes.
