The Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement held in a video-conference format
Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) was held today upon the call of the Chairman of the NAM, President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev. Due to the world-wide COVID-19 pandemic, for the first time in history the summit takes place though a video-conference. Focused on the fight against coronavirus pandemic, the motto of the current summit is “United against COVID-19”.
President Aliyev convened the summit, followed by the speech by 74th President of the United Nations General Assembly Tijjani Muhammad-Bande.
Video messages by the UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Director-General of the World Health Organization Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and Chairperson of the African Union Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat were screened to the summit members.
Given that the NAM includes 120 countries, the Summit is held in the format of a Contact Group with the participation of countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America, based on the principle of geographic representation.
Azerbaijan took over the NAM Chairmanship for 2019-2022.
On April 10, 2020, upon the initiative of the Chairman of the Cooperation Council of Turkic-Speaking States, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, an extraordinary Summit of the Turkic Council was held in a similar video-conference format to discuss the fight against the coronavirus pandemic. The Turkic Council was the first international organization across the globe to hold a summit on the coronavirus pandemic at the level of heads of state. Hungary is the member of the Turkic Council.
