The third Balaton Barista and Cocktail Competition took place this Saturday in Gyenesdiás where the jury voted for the year’s best coffee drink and cocktail, zaol.hu reported.
The mastermind and organiser of the competition, Zoltán Somogyi from Gyenesdiás, said that from the very beginning the aim was to popularise quality coffee and discover a summer cocktail that is refreshing and perfect for the Balaton. The competition aims to present Lake Balaton in a new fashion, to strengthen its reputation and demonstrate this lifestyle to new visitors.
The first competition of the Balaton Courses event series featured a contest between the baristas. They had 15 minutes to prepare 4 espressos, 4 cappuccinos and the 4 of the barista’s own speciality coffee drink.
The most creative barista, Richárd Csóka, from the city of Győr, won the title of the Best Coffee of Balaton, by serving his coffee drink with edible flowers.
One shot of espresso, cherry puree, a bit of citrus and tonic, shake it up, then pour the filtered drink on ice and decorate it.
The drink is named Pelso Nova, and you can find it in many pastry and coffee shops and restaurants during the summer.
With all the coffee drinks taken into account, the Balaton Barista Champion is Erik Józsi, also from Győr.
The cocktail competition took place that afternoon with new competitors. The winner was Máté Keleti from Gyömrő; his cocktail is called The Heart of Balaton. For him, Lake Balaton means peace, nature, harmony and comfort. This is what he tried to show in his creations.
Gin, rose lemonade, apricot and cardamom bitter, lavender and elder syrup and some fresh lime. Lavender is linked to Tihany, elder is linked to Balatonfenyves and they both gave the cocktail a floral taste.
