A tragic incident occurred on Monday in Odorheiu Secuiesc, as a 17-year-old student lost his life under the debris of a collapsed section of the Tamási Áron High School dormitory.
Accident in Szeklerland
Firefighters arrived swiftly in force at the Tamási Áron High School in Odorheiu Secuiesc to rescue three girls, aged 15-17, from the wreckage. While two were conscious, the third required resuscitation and remains in critical condition on a ventilator.
For several hours, rescue teams tirelessly searched for the fourth victim buried beneath the rubble. After two and a half hours, the ISU reported successfully locating the conscious boy, establishing communication with him. However, this information mysteriously vanished from the ISU’s rapid reports. The fourth victim was eventually extricated just ten minutes before 7.00 p.m. local time, but despite resuscitation efforts, the tragic news was announced at 7.30 p.m. that the victim did not survive, as reported by economx.hu.
The collapsed dormitory was the only building of the high school that was still under renovation. The other buildings have recently been redone completely, thanks to Hungarian state aid.
Reacting to the heart-wrenching incident on Facebook, President Klaus Iohannis extended condolences to the grieving family and wished a swift recovery to the injured students.
“This tragedy brutally underscores the top priority of ensuring school safety. The spaces where children spend the majority of their time must adhere to contemporary safety standards. Swift clarification of the causes behind the building collapse is imperative, with those responsible facing appropriate consequences,” wrote the Romanian head of state on his social media page.
