Video: Trump’s astonishing reaction to PM Orbán’s defeat

Change language:
Yesterday, Hungarian voters ousted Prime Minister Viktor Orbán from office and empowered Péter Magyar and his Tisza Party to govern Hungary with a supermajority. Orbán loses power after 16 years being premier, and journalists asked President Trump how he feels about that brutal defeat.
Multiple endorsements for Orbán
Based on the current state of vote count, Péter Magyar’s Tisza Party will have 138 mandated in the new Hungarian Parliament, while Fidesz will only have 55 representatives with Mi Hazánk (Our Homeland), Hungary’s far-right party and their six MPs.
According to insider information, the overwhelming defeat surprised Orbán and his team, who thought their victory will be thin but solid.

Three days earlier, US President Donald Trump shared a post on Truth Social endorsing Orbán. He described the Hungarian premier as “a truly strong and powerful Leader, with a proven track record of delivering phenomenal results. He fights tirelessly for, and loves, his Great Country and People, just like I do for the United States of America. Viktor works hard to Protect Hungary, Grow the Economy, Create Jobs, Promote Trade, Stop Illegal Immigration, and Ensure LAW AND ORDER! Relations between Hungary and the United States have reached new heights of cooperation and spectacular achievement under my Administration, thanks largely to Prime Minister Orbán. I look forward to continuing working closely with him so that both of our Countries can further advance this tremendous path to SUCCESS and cooperation. I was proud to ENDORSE Viktor for Re-Election in 2022, and am honoured to do so again.”
Later in the post, he called on everybody to “get out and vote for Viktor”, who is a winner.

Trump remained silent
However, Trump’s endorsement proved ineffective. It seems he already sensed the shift in momentum, as he refused to visit Hungary to support Orbán. Although there were plans to welcome the president on 15 March or later, only Vice President JD Vance came last week.
Yesterday evening, a journalist tried to ask President Trump his opinion on Orbán’s defeat and Magyar’s strong showing. However, the president pretended not to hear the question, even though it was repeated multiple times. He kept waving to the journalists waiting on the White House lawn but refused to say anything.
