Budapest’s popular Fisherman’s Bastion entrance fees will rise drastically

According to a proposal submitted by the mayor of Budapest’s 1st district, the local council may increase the ticket fees to one of the capital’s main tourist hotspots, the Fisherman’s Bastion in Buda Castle. But not only the ticket prices may change soon, read the details below to learn more. 

Price increase on the horizon

According to portfolio.hu, the local council of the 1st district (Castle District) of Budapest can decide about the drastic entrance fee rise to the famous Fisherman’s Bastion, one of Hungary’s symbols. The place is extremely popular among Hungarian and foreign tourists coming to Budapest and is also one of the most “Instagram-able” spots in Budapest. Based on the mayor’s proposal, in return for the higher costs, they would increase service quality.

You must pay for the upper observation platform of the Fisherman’s Bastion from 16 March until 23 December. That will not change. However, the period during which you have to pay an entrance fee during the day will be extended. Currently, that is between 9 AM and 7 PM. However, the local council may extend that to 9 AM – 9 PM between 1 June and 30 September.

The proposal gives the power of Budavári Kapu Ltd, the company operating the bastion, to cut the non-free period on a given day. That is because provided the weather is bad, fewer people will come. That is why the system needs flexibility.

The proposal will probably be accepted by the local council

Nevertheless, they would increase ticket prices by 20 percent. Adults would have to pay HUF 1,200 (EUR 3.17) instead of HUF 1,000 (EUR 2.64), while students and pensioners HUF 600 (EUR 1.6) instead of the previous HUF 500 (EUR 1.32). On the Hungarian national days (15 March, 20 August, and 23 October) the Fisherman’s Bastion will remain free.

Furthermore, the following groups of people will be exempted from paying for a ticket:

• children under 6
• teachers accompanying students (1 teacher/10 students)
• ambulance crew, and disaster management officers while doing their job
• officials of the local government
• officials of the monument protection authority
• tour guides (with groups above five persons)
• people working on the bastion
• disabled people
• residents

Though the opposition-backed mayor, Váradiné Naszályi Márta, no longer has a majority in the local council of the 1st district, the proposal is expected to receive a green light.
