Hungarian university 5th best in the region

Hungarian Semmelweis University has made it to the best universities in the Central and Eastern European region, as Forbes.hu reported. It has also become the best among the EU member states joined in 2004. Baltic state Estonia dominates the region.

Times Higher Education recently concluded a list of the best universities, on which Semmelweis University produced the most favourable results in Hungary. The New Europe ranking list’s new chart includes the universities of EU member states that joined in 2004. The method of ranking is similar to the one in THE World University Rankings.

13 countries were evaluated, and all of them had universities that made it to the list (except Malta). Taking the number of ranking universities, the Czech Republic takes the lead among the countries with 13 universities on the list. They are followed by two of their fellow V4 nations, Poland (with 12 entries) and Hungary (7 entries). Romania and 5 of its universities occupy the fourth place.

The top university out of the 53 from 13 different countries was Tartu University from Estonia.

Two institutions took the second and third place from Cyprus. Charles University from Prague, the Czech Republic ranks fourth, followed by the Hungarian medical school Semmelweis University. Still, the top university on the list is somewhere between the 301st and the 350th rank on the global chart, so this league is still far from the bests in the world. However, four Hungarian universities were elected among the bests on the list of British company Quacquarelli Symonds, so these lists depend on the perspective.

Besides Semmelweis, six other universities made it on the list,

which are the following: Eötvös Lóránd University is the 11th, the University of Pécs is 13th, the University of Szeged is 18th, Budapest University of Technology and Economics is 25th, the University of Debrecen 27th, and Corvinus University is somewhere between 31st and 40th.

Five attributes were evaluated during the creation of THE ranking: these are the environment of education, research, citation, industrial income and international orientation.
