Hungarians continue to shrink
Preliminary data show that 7,398 children were born and 11,342 people died in January, with the number of live births decreasing by 3.4 percent and deaths by 14 percent between February 2022-January 2023 compared with the same period a year earlier, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) said on Thursday.
The natural population loss was 3,944 in January this year as against 6,591 in January 2022, KSH said.
In January 2023, 1,230 couples tied the knot, down 45 percent from January 2022.
In the past 12 months, 89,183 children were born, down 3.4 percent from the same period of last year, while 133,836 people died, 14 percent fewer than in the previous year.
The natural population loss came to 44,653 compared with 62,705 in the same period of last year, a drop of 29 percent.
Between February 2022 and January 2023, 63,104 couples were married, 12 percent fewer than in the previous year.
