Israeli embassy condemns Szentgotthard mayor’s remarks on Paris attacks

Budapest, November 30 (MTI) – The Israeli embassy has condemned remarks by the mayor of Szengotthard, in western Hungary, claiming that Israel was behind the recent Paris terrorist attacks.

Gabor Huszar’s remarks “have repeatedly shown that there are still people who have not learnt from history and continue to promote conspiracy theories and negative views about the Jewish state, Israel, and the Jews,” a statement by the embassy on Monday said.

It is regrettable that “a public personality, the Fidesz mayor of Szentgotthard … has come forward with such untrue and ridiculous statements,” the embassy said. Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East, and its people have been victims of thousands of terrorist attacks. The mayor has confused the attacker and the victims, it added.

Later in the day, Huszar apologised for his remarks in a statement. He regretted that his words had been “ill-considered”. He said that his remarks had not been intended for the public and he had not meant to offend members of the Jewish community.
