Parlt passes bill allowing “safe” country distinction in asylum law
Budapest, June 30 (MTI) – Lawmakers on Tuesday approved a decree which mandates the government to identify “safe” countries from where asylum requests would be rejected.
An amendment to the law on asylum submitted by ruling Fidesz was passed in a vote of 140 in favour and 14 against it with 27 abstentions. Governing parties and radical nationalist Jobbik party voted in favour, LMP and independents against and Socialist lawmakers abstained.
Speaking in support of the motion, Lajos Kosa said earlier that “if someone is a refugee they must stop at the place where their lives are no longer threatened.”
