Sándor Csányi re-elected to UEFA ExCo while also becoming UEFA and FIFA vice president

The Hungarian Football Federation president has been re-elected as a member of the UEFA Executive Committee – its highest decision-making body – for another four years at the UEFA Congress in Rome. Sándor Csányi will also represent the interests of the continent as a Vice President of FIFA, whilst Hungary’s top football administrator also becomes a Vice President of UEFA.

Csányi was first voted into the UEFA decision-making body in 2015, becoming FIFA Vice President after Spaniard Ángel María Villar left in 2018. In today’s vote on UEFA Executive Committee membership, Csányi received most votes with 49 of the 53 in total being cast for him.

During the afternoon, UEFA’s new Executive Committee met, and at the inaugural meeting, Aleksander Čeferin announced that one of the new vice-presidents of the European governing body for the next four-year period will be Sándor Csányi. It has never happened before that a Hungarian sports administrator has held two such lofty international positions such as the FIFA and UEFA Vice President roles, at the same time.

“By re-electing me to the two positions, European sports leaders have shown that they recognise the development of Hungarian football”,

Csányi told mlsz.hu following the voting. “The trust also means that they have rewarded the international work of recent years. Our country stands before prestigious tasks, such a series which has never occurred in the history of Hungarian football. This May, Budapest will host the biggest event in women’s club football, the Champions League final and next year we’ll be co-hosting – along with another 11 countries – the largest European Championship ever held. In 2021 we’ll be joint hosts along with Slovenia, of the European Under-21 Championship. We can be satisfied if the development of the football background is reflected in the performances of our clubs and national teams”.

Furthermore, a decision was taken in Rome to expand the men’s U21 European Championship, due to be held in Hungary and Slovenia in 2021, to a 16-team finals tournament, the first time a Euros of this size will have been held in this age group.
