Unbelievable railway upgrade will allow you to reach Vienna Airport from Budapest!
The Austrian government, in collaboration with ÖBB, has unveiled ambitious plans to upgrade Austria’s railway network by 2040. This initiative promises faster and improved regional and international connectivity, marking the dawn of an era characterised by streamlined rail travel spanning numerous regions, including Hungary.
The proposals comprise a comprehensive set of 67 projects, all aimed at enhancing the appeal of railway travel. ÖBB’s ambitious expansion plans promise to significantly slash travel times by expanding the rail network. This initiative not only cuts the Vienna to Munich journey time from four hours to a mere two and a half but also reduces the Budapest-Munich route by 35 minutes, according to drivemagazine.hu. Furthermore, Vienna Airport is set to benefit from improved connectivity with a new route linking Budapest and Bratislava directly slated for construction. Moreover, travel times between Vienna and Budapest are expected to decrease from 2 hours and 40 minutes to just 2 hours and 20 minutes between 2025 and 2029. The project is estimated to cost EUR 26 billion. The Austrian government asserts that these enhancements will yield a return on investment through job creation, ensuring that all stakeholders reap the rewards of enhanced rail connections.
Advantages of the railway upgrade
This development offers numerous advantages for residents of Hungary and travellers alike. Enhanced conditions promise not only a more enjoyable but also a swifter journey, fostering connectivity between important locations. Given Budapest and Vienna’s status not only as travel hubs but also as tourist centres, this development stands to significantly benefit those traversing the region. Beyond catering to tourists and travellers, the expansion of railway infrastructure holds economic viability by expediting the movement of goods within the EU.

First of all Budapest is NOT a travel hub because you can’t fly directly to Budapest from North America. Vienna is a minor hub as is for example Warsaw. The real hubs are London, Paris, Frankfurt and Amsterdam. The article does not give any time lines for a Vienna airport to Budapest connection but it would be a great improvement for getting to the non-hub city of Budapest from the minor hub airport at Vienna. Flixbus operates a few daily buses between Schwechat and Budapest but depending on your arrival you might have to wait a few hours before bus departure. Right now to connect by train you have to get to the Hauptbahnhof from the airport first.
