Unemployment in Hungary rises to levels not seen for 3.5 years
Hungary’s jobless rate stood at 4.5 percent in January, up from 4.2 percent in December, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) said on Friday.
The rate covers unemployment among people between the ages of 15 and 74.
In absolute terms, there were 222,000 unemployed in January, 14,700 more than in December.
The rolling three-month average jobless rate stood at 4.6 percent in January, inching up from 4.4 percent in December.
The unemployment rate of 4.6 percent is still not too high; however, the last time it was this high was in May 2020, when the statistical office measured 4.7 percent.
KSH noted that data from the National Employment Service (NFSZ) show there were 233,000 registered jobseekers at the end of January, down 4.4 percent from twelve months earlier.
The employment rate for the 15-74 age group was 64.4 percent in January, down from 64.7 percent in December. In absolute terms, there were 4,698,500 people employed in January, 24,900 fewer than in December.
The number of economically active people in the age group stood at 4,920,600, giving Hungary an activity rate of 67.4 percent.
Commenting on the data, Sándor Czomba, the state secretary for employment policy, said the government had been successful in protecting jobs and families, noting that the number of jobholders had grown by 1 million since the tenure of the previous Socialist governments.
The government this year is focused on achieving a GDP growth rate of 4 percent, restoring consumption, keeping the investment rate above 25 percent and increasing labour-market activity, he said.
The state secretary said a HUF 460 billion (EUR 1.19 billion) GINOP Plusz European Union-funded economic development scheme would contribute to raising the activity rate of the 15-64 age group to 85 percent from the current 78 percent.

Hey! Didni hear guest workers? 😀
This is OPPOSITE the direction as being “mouth” by the Prime Minister of Hungary – Victor Orban, in his address to Hungary in the past 7 days.
What we have to pay close attention to, is the conglomeration / different category’s that fall under the word usage of Employment.
We know our job market is being FLOODED by guest Workers.
Full time – part time – casual, then the hours worked per week or month, that if you work x hours month, you are “deemed” to be under full employment, but if you work under x hours you are “deemed” as being un-employed.
I would hasten to say these figures coming out of the Central Statistical Office of Hungary don’t REFLECT factually the level of un-employment in Hungary.
WHAT does “deem” a person as Fully employed by a Government ?
Exampled – if say you work 30 plus hours per week – the Government in REPORTING the employed and un-employed FIGURES percentages – in the employed category 30 hours plus a week you are employed.
If you work less than 30 hours a week – you are recorded as being un-employed.
Therefor, take these latest figures out of the Central Statistical Office – signed off and approved for PUBLIC exhibition to all Hungarians – what HOURS per week – Month, do the Orban Government say COVERS you being by them as EMPLOYED ???
If it is say below 30 hours per week – like 25 hours per week – sadly what a “Crap” quality of life-style becoming a greater challenge to survive with rising living costs that would be in Hungary.
30 hours a week – the challenge growing massively to LIVE – wow – it would be a gargantuan CHALLENGE.
Governments play around with – political “mind games” – employed & un-employed figures/statistic’s.
It’s in there DNA under Propaganda – or provides a facility to VEIL fact & truth – to gain Political advantage.
This is why – the categories that COMPRISE – in the case of this article that the Jobless Rate/un-employed in Hungary – increased from 4.2% to 4.5% from December 2023 to January 2024 – in the age bracket of 18 to the WRONGFUL excessive or expectancy to work FULL time to 74 – remembering FACTUALLY that Hungary – we are an Ageing Society, that over the past 15 years plus – more Hungarians “pass on” than new babies Hungarians are born.
Ridiculous – to 74 years of age – 3rd World or the Communistic way of reporting employment & un-employment figures / statistics.
Break it down say 18 – 65 – employed – what this % ?
THEN humiliate yourself as a Government under Victor Orban – give us a figure – a percentage of those 65 years of age to 74 years of age – who YOU are REPORTING in Full time employment ?
Manipulation run’s AMUCK in the reporting of employment & un-employment data, the publication exhibiting being a FABRICATION of Reality that illuminates to Citizens – TRUTH, the truthful picture.
Guest Workers – love of Orban to INVITE them in, and they continue to COME, have they STOLEN the 14,700 “disappearing” jobs – away from DNA – Hungarians ???
The difficulty growing hiring a bike in Budapest these past months as if YOU haven’t NOTICED – it’s massively OBVIOUS – the food delivery services by bike, the cyclists are – you guessed it – what 95% Guest Workers.
I just hope that Hungarians are smart and sensitive enough, and also to be kind(maybe this is too much to ask) with the guest workers. They are not guilty of the upcoming situation in the country, if Hungarians should point to someone is to Orban and Fidesz. So much speeches agains immigrants and then they are just doing the opposite. What kind of supporters are the pro fidesz? Can’t they see the true behind?
