UNHCR provides constant aid for migrants at border
Budapest, September 6 (MTI) – The UNHCR is constantly providing help for migrants arriving in Hungary, Erno Simon, spokesman for the refugee agency’s Hungarian service centre, said in Roszke near the Serbian border on Sunday.
Simon said UNHCR workers are especially looking after migrants in need of special care such as medical treatment, while keeping the agency’s Brussels and Geneva offices up to date on the situation in Hungary.
Being one of the countries that signed the UN’s refugee convention and a member of the European Union, it is Hungary’s duty to take care of the refugees on its own soil, Simon said, adding that the UNHCR aims to fulfill its duty by ensuring that the asylum procedure in Hungary is trouble-free, suits the country’s interests and respects refugees’ human dignity.
Simon said every country has a right to protect its borders but this does not mean that countries should place obstacles in front of those trying to apply for asylum. He noted that Hungary’s constitution also grants rights to refugees and expressed the importance of ensuring the safety of those fleeing their war-torn countries. Simon said each asylum application needs to be assessed individually, even if the large number of refugees makes this a “huge task”.
