VIDEO, PHOTOS: Debrecen’s beautifully renewed park inaugurated

Debrecen is Hungary’s second biggest city with more than 200 thousand residents, a world-known university and several programs to enjoy during the winter, one of which is the city’s Christmas Fair opening on 26 November. With the help of the EU, one of the most beautiful parks in the city was renewed and inaugurated.

László Papp, the mayor of the Hungarian municipality, said the project won HUF 900 million (EUR 2.2 million) from one of the European Union’s development funds. The renewal concentrated not only on the park but also its environment, the city leader added. They renovated the pedestrian zones running on the two sides of the park, the crossroads of Piac and Holló János streets, and the parking places. The project included the renovation of the utility network under the park, hirado.hu wrote.

Furthermore, they created an irrigable park where a new 400 square metre lake serves the entertainment of the locals. There is a wood-covered terrace on which a pavilion will be built for barbecue. They also built a memorial for the damages Debrecen suffered during WWII.

The city created a Historic educational path on which people can see the silhouettes of the perished buildings. Thus, they can recreate the park’s former outlook.

They built a playground in the park and planted new trees near the promenades. To ensure public safety, they placed 14 surveillance cameras in the plaza.

A municipal representative of the governing Fidesz-KDNP coalition said the park might be the venue of some future sports programs.
