Vidi’s European adventure over for another season
Videoton could not claw back a three-goal deficit incurred in last week’s Europa League play-off first leg away against Lech Poznan tonight, instead slipping to a single-goal defeat which means they are now out of European competition for the rest of the 2015/2016 season.
It was always going to be difficult to recover from such a setback in Poland but for the first half Vidi battled gamely and could have taken the lead, most notably through Róbert Fecezsin in the 8th minute when his smart shot was tipped round the post by the Lech goalkeeper Jasmin Burić or when Fejes shot wide just before half-time.
The crucial blow was struck in the 57th minute though when a defensive mix-up allowed 21-year-old Tomasz Kędziora to knock the ball into an empty net and make it 4-0 on aggregate to the club from Poznan. There were occasional chances to score in the final half hour but ultimately the scoresheet remained with just one goal noted and so Videoton will now be able to concentrate fully on arresting their perilous league position in Hungary’s NBI.
