Crisis? Viktor Orbán’s monthly salary will increase extremely in 2023
If, according to the statistical forecasts, salaries will indeed increase by 17.7 percent in 2022, Members of the Parliament can expect a pay rise of at least HUF 230,000 (EUR 573) in 2023. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and House Speaker László Kövér will also benefit. The gross salary of the head of government could rise by almost HUF 860,000 (EUR 2,145) from March, while the salary of House Speaker could rise by more than HUF 600,000 (EUR 1,496). From spring, President Katalin Novák will earn almost HUF 4.6 million (EUR 11,474).
“Now is not the time to move forward one or two steps, in terms of development or even wages,” Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said in July, in response to the demands on wages.
Parliamentarians do not have to worry about inflation above 20 percent: four years ago, Fidesz-KDNP politicians passed an amendment to the law that set the basic salary of MPs at three times the average salary of the previous year.
Accordingly, politicians do not need to adopt new legislation every year to increase their salaries, as the allowances are automatically increased – or decreased – according to the earnings in the previous year.
The statistics for 2022 are not yet official. The Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH) only released the data for January-September. The latest figures for wages in September show that average gross earnings were 17.8 percent higher than a year earlier. Experts expect a similar increase, with GKI Economic Research Institute estimating that salaries will rise by 17.7 percent this year as a whole. This means that the gross wage will rise from HUF 438,800 (EUR 1,092) to roughly HUF 516,467 (EUR 1,288).
According to RTL.hu, this means that the current basic salary of HUF 1,316,000 (EUR 3,283) will increase to approximately HUF 1,549,000 (EUR 3,864) gross from March 2023.
Next year, MPs can therefore expect a pay rise of at least HUF 230,000 (EUR 573) while the majority will see an even bigger increase in their allowances due to committee memberships and extra money for other positions.
If you are a member of a parliamentary committee, you can take home 1.2 times your basic salary, i.e. roughly HUF 1,860,000 (EUR 4,641) from March. The salary of MPs who also hold two committee positions could increase by more than HUF 300,000 (EUR 748) to almost HUF 2,170,000 (EUR 5,415) per month.
However, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán will receive not only the basic salary of MPs, but also – since his pay rises in the summer – the same amount as the Speaker’s salary, which is 2.7 times the basic salary. This means that, based on an average salary increase of 17.7 percent, from March, the Prime Minister’s salary may rise from the current HUF 4,870,000 (EUR 12,154) to HUF 5,727,000 (EUR 14,293) gross.
By comparison, from January, the average pension will increase by HUF 27,000 (EUR 67) to HUF 207,000 (EUR 516). The gross minimum wage will rise by HUF 32,000 (EUR 80) to HUF 232,000 (EUR 579).

The increase is therefore more than 30 times higher than the average pension and more than 25 times higher than the minimum wage.
According to G7’s calculations, teachers will also receive a much more modest increase from January: the gross salary of a starting secondary school teacher could rise from HUF 241,000 (601 EUR) to HUF 263,000 (656 EUR) after the increase, which is barely HUF 1,000 (2.5 EUR) more than the guaranteed minimum wage next year.
House Speaker, ministers, other allowances
Based on an average salary increase of 17.7 percent, László Kövér’s salary would rise to almost HUF 4.2 million (10,481 EUR) from HUF 3.5 million (8,737 EUR).
The President of the Republic, Katalin Novák, also receives the salary of the President of House. She will receive 1.1 times László Kövér’s salary, i.e. roughly HUF 4.6 million (11,483 EUR) gross. This is HUF 700,000 (EUR 1,747) more than the current amount.
The specific salaries of ministers are not set, as the head of government is free to decide on the salaries of ministers. Gergely Gulyás, the minister in charge of the Prime Minister’s Office, said earlier that since 2018, Viktor Orbán has set the salaries of ministers at six times the average salary. If he continues to adhere to this measure next year, each minister may receive a salary of approximately HUF 3.1 million (EUR 7,737), which is HUF 460,000 (EUR 1,148) more than before.
If the minister is also a member of parliament, they will also be entitled to the MPs’ basic salary, in which case the March salary increase could reach HUF 700,000 (EUR 1,747).
However, in addition to their salaries, parliamentary politicians also receive other allowances. For example, they can spend more than HUF 541,000 (EUR 1350) on rent and HUF 77,000 (EUR 192) on mobile phone costs.
The governing MPs have so far not indicated that they will change the rules on automatic pay rises because of the difficulties faced by the public.

Keep voting for pigs.
Reality: One member of Parliment gets a raise amount the is more than a teacher gets in a month.
President Novak gets an increase that is equal to more than three months of teacher salery, and that is just the raise,
It seems that the only “family” that Novak cares about is hers . . , . what a paper president she turned out to be.
“Yes” – Prime Minister.
Famous term used in a classic British Political sitcom from 1980-1988.
President of Hungary – want MORE needs to be said.
Ammunition from all sides just WORSENS what’s FACTUALLY occurring in the running of Hungary under Victor Orban.
The Longer we go along just like LEMMINGS tolerating, putting up with ALL that just continues to be RIGHTFULLY piled on the Orban plate – that is evidence of the DESTRUSTRION of Hungary, it will go on.
Education/Educators – Students, Families – we must NOT roll over – give in to this Government.
Is this not another SLUR or Insult to Education in Hungary?
It is DEFFINENTLY another example of the non importance attitude to Education this Orban Government practices.
We must not “roll over.” – remembering that Education opens Windows of Opportunity.
Hungary – the Orban Government never have embraced that FACT nor will they EVER.

While we’re at it, we should rebuild the castle and all the old non-existent buildings so that private persons can open cafes and museums in them. Oh wait, we are actually doing that.
