Year-long Hungarian cultural festival to begin in Poland

Warsaw (MTI) – A large-scale Hungarian cultural festival featuring a new play on 1956, concerts by the National Philharmonic, several exhibitions and other events will begin in Poland next week, Hungarian officials said in Warsaw on Wednesday.

The year-long festival will be organised within the framework of a government programme launched to mark the 60th anniversary of the anti-communist uprising in Poland’s Poznan in June 1956 and Hungary’s anti-Soviet revolution four months later, Hungarian Ambassador Iván Gyurcsik told a press conference.

The festival will formally begin with a performance by renowned contemporary ballet group Győr Ballet in Teatr Polski in Warsaw next Thursday. Hungary will be celebrated as guest of honour at the international Book Fair that will begin in the Polish capital also on Thursday.

A new play, Ilona Tóth, telling the story of a young hero of the 1956 revolution, will premiere in October in Warsaw, the director of the Hungarian Cultural Institute said.

The National Philharmonic conducted by Zoltán Kocsis will give several concerts in Warsaw, Szczecin, Krakow, Poznan, Katowice in the autumn, said János Tischler.

The National Museum in Krakow will put on two separate exhibitions from October this year until the end of 2017. The first will highlight the “golden age” of Hungarian painting spanning the period between 1830 and 1930 and the next will feature the Group of Eight avant-garde art movement.

Several Hungarian programmes will be organised in Wroclaw, a European Capital of Culture this year.
