Tragic loss: 12-year-old Hungarian basketball player passes away suddenly

A deep sense of shock and grief has swept through the Hungarian sports community following the sudden passing of Dóra Fricsi, the TARR KSC Szekszárd’s 12-year-old U14 basketball player. The young athlete collapsed without warning during a training session on 5 August at the gym of the Baka István Elementary School, after her heart suddenly stopped.

The fight for life

According to Telex, her coach immediately began resuscitation efforts with guidance from the emergency dispatcher, while paramedics arrived on the scene within minutes. Dóra was airlifted by rescue helicopter to Budapest for cardiological treatment, and her condition was stabilised for a time. Sadly, three days later, on 8 August, her body succumbed, despite the dedicated medical care.

Dóra’s memory lives on

Both TARR KSC Szekszárd and the Hungarian Basketball Federation expressed their deepest condolences to Dóra’s family and club, highlighting her cheerful, community-building spirit and the profound loss her absence will leave. On Sunday at 8 PM, the club will hold a heartfelt candlelit vigil at the Drazsen Petrovics Memorial Tree near the Szekszárd Sports Hall. The family asks that, in Dóra’s honour, everyone wishing to pay their respects come dressed in colourful clothes, reflecting her lively and warm nature.

The message of tragedy: Quick action can save lives

Sudden cardiac arrest is a rare but life-threatening event that often happens without warning or prior symptoms. Immediate and skilled resuscitation, along with rapid arrival of emergency services, as was the case here, is crucial for any chance of survival. Dóra’s story reminds all of us just how vital basic first aid and resuscitation know-how is, whether in sports clubs, schools, or any community.

We extend our deepest sympathies and support to Dóra’s family, friends, teammates, and coaches during this unimaginably painful time. The memory of this exceptionally cheerful and talented young athlete, lost to a tragic fate, lives on within the Szekszárd community and the entire Hungarian basketball family.
