2015/2016 Hungarian Cup summary as competition reaches quarter-final stage
Mlsz.hu said, Hungarian Cup holders Ferencváros are still dreaming of a possible league and cup double, one which would be the seventh in their history and their first since 2004 under the reign of Attila Pintér.
Currently 18 points clear in the league, Thomas Doll’s side face Videoton in a repeat of last year’s final as this year’s competition reaches the quarter final stage.
The Hungarian Football Association’s offical site said, Ferencváros have home advantage in the first leg at the new Groupama Aréna which hosted last season’s final and will do so again this year. Videoton, now third in the league after recovering from a poor start and vastly improved under coach Ferenc Horváth, will be seeking revenge for the 4-0 reverse in last season’s final.
Meanwhile, three third division sides are into the last eight – FC Tiszaújváros, whose striker Bence Katona leads the scoring chart with seven goals – face Újpest, winners in 2014, while Nyíregyháza, relegated from the first division last summer amidst financial difficulties, face local rivals Debrecen in what promises to be a hotly contested affair.
The story of the cup so far though, is the other third division side Kozármislény SE. So far on their way to the quarter-finals the team from the outskirts of Pécs have beaten three top-tier sides along the way; Puskás Akadémia 2-0 in Round 2, Diósgyőr 1-0 in Round 3 and Honvéd 2-1, twice, on the way to the quarter-finals where they will face first division strugglers Békéscsaba.
The Hungarian Cup quarter-final first and second legs are on 10th February and 2nd March with the final scheduled for 14th May.
