Diosgyor Castle Opens to Visitors in NE Hungary
Budapest, August 30 (MTI) – The Diosgyor castle in Hungary’s northeast opened its doors to the public after extensive renovations on Saturday.
The castle was reconstructed at a cost of 2.714 billion forints (EUR 8.6m), mainly with European Union support, Laszlo L. Simon, state secretary at the Prime Minister’s Office, said at the opening ceremony. He praised the project as exemplary in heritage reconstruction in that it was careful to follow original plans of the period. He added that the upcoming Buda Castle royal palace reconstruction project will draw on experiences from Diosgyor, too.
The Diosgyor castle, dated back to the 1340s, was rebuilt in full two storeys to include the largest knight’s hall in central Europe as well as a chapel and the queen’s chambers.
Tamas Szucs, the head of the European Commission’s Hungarian Representation, noted at the ceremony that the EU has granted 2.272 billion forints to the Diosgyor-Lillafured complex cultural and eco-tourism development, too.
