Refurbished Debrecen Landmark Church Inaugurated
(MTI) – A mass was held in presence of politicians and church leaders to celebrate the complete refurbishment of the Reformed Great Church of Debrecen, a landmark of Hungary’s second largest city, on Sunday.
The renovation, supported by the European Union, is a mark of renewal, symbolic of Europe’s rediscovery of the path along which we Hungarians proceeded under the leadership of King St. Stephen, Lajos Kosa, the city mayor, said.
Ideals and values that Hungarians used to believe in when the regime changed 25 years ago have been losing steam in Europe, he said.
“Illusions about freedom and various ideologies can be chased for some time, but as these exhaust themselves, there comes a moment when churches need to be refurbished and roots re-discovered,” he said.
Speaking at the event, Zoltan Balog the human resources minister, thanked the citizens of the EU, Hungarian taxpayers, the political and professional decision-makers, as well as workers for the project.
The overall internal and outer upgrade of the church built between 1805 and 1824 in neoclassical style has been carried out under a 1 billion forint (EUR 3.18m ) project with EU and Hungarian co-funding.
