Budapest to Host Four Euro 2020 Matches
(MTI) – Budapest’s Puskas Ferenc Stadium has been selected as the venue of four matches of the European Soccer Championship in 2020.
Budapest will host three group matches and a round of 16 match, the Executive Committee of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) announced in Geneva on Friday.
Other hosts of the tournament will be London, Munich, Rome, Saint Petersburg, Amsterdam, Bucharest, Bilbao, Brussels, Copenhagen, Dublin and Glasgow.
The final and the semi-finals will be played in Wembley Stadium.
Returning from Geneva, Sandor Csanyi, the president of the Hungarian Football Association (MLSZ), said that Hungary’s recent sports diplomacy achievements had given the MLSZ every reason to hope that the bid would be accepted. He noted that Hungary had hosted a FIFA and a UEFA congress as well as an Under-19 European Soccer Championship recently.
Asked if he was disappointed about Hungary failing to host a quarter-final, Csanyi said: “We would have been glad but did not really expect to host one.”
Hungary bid to host the European championship for the fourth time but its attempts in 2004, 2008 and 2012 ended in failure.
By 2018 Puskas Ferenc Stadium will have been renovated and extended to a capacity of 68,000.
Once the new arena has been completed, Hungary will bid to organise a Champions League or a Europa League final, Csanyi said.
