Hungary’s government to start talks with Opel owner PSA

Berlin (MTI) – The Hungarian government is to initiate talks with French corporation PSA, the new owner of German car manufacturer Opel, about maintaining and developing the plant near Szentgotthárd in western Hungary, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said after talks with senior managers at the Ruesselsheim, Germany, headquarters of the company.

The Szentgotthárd plant is the largest Opel motor manufacturer in Europe, with a record 630 thousand engines produced in 2016, Szijjártó said, noting that the first Opel Astra rolled off the facility’s line 25 years ago.

The minister said that the government’s tax cuts and other measures fostering competitiveness as well as the constant development of technical education continue to make Hungary an attractive venue for Opel, he said.

Szijjártó, who held talks with other major manufacturers and interest associations, said that the economic players of the German federal state Hesse received Hungary’s economic policy “extremely positively”. The parties agreed that the EU regulations should not give preference to environmental protection over competitiveness, he said, adding that balancing the two is especially important in the car industry.
