Book on Communist-Era Rural Architecture Wins Award in Frankfurt
Berlin, October 9 (MTI) – An album presenting an overview of the Kadar-cube, a box-like detached house built in the Hungarian provinces in the 1960s-70s, has received the DAM Architectural Book Award at the 66th Frankfurt Book Fair.
Hungarian Cubes focuses on the efforts owners made to give the “cold, lifeless, standard unit” a unique look and character, creating a “surprising counter-culture” of facade designs based on popular traditions. That “revolutionary decorative art” against “dictated uniformity” was a grass-roots initiative in Hungarian architecture, the justification to the award said.
The album was edited by Katharina Roters, author of the photographs included, and was published by Park Books earlier this year.
Founded in 2009, the award went this year to 10 architectural books selected from 205 submissions.
