Local elections – Bokros says restoring rule of law, democracy “most important”
(MTI) – Restoring a constitutional democracy in Hungary is the most important goal, Lajos Bokros, the conservative Budapest mayoral candidate backed by several leftist opposition parties, said at his closing campaign event in the capital.
Bokros, leader of the Movement for a Modern Hungary, said this restoration must start at local level, since local governments form a part of the system of checks and balances. He added that this overarching aim overrides the differences between the five parties supporting him, among them Egyutt, the Democratic Coalition and the Budapest chapter of the Socialist Party.
He condemned government politicians for claiming that only localities which voted for a candidate backed by the ruling parties would get hold of development funding. Bokros said such a pledge fell within the logic of a dictatorship.
